What this document records

Scan is final

DO NOT REQUEST OR PROPOSE A HIGHER-RESOLUTION SCAN. Per the maintainer (2026-04-21) no better scan of this inventory is obtainable. ⇒ the partial status is PERMANENT and must not be "upgraded" to verbatim; the faint figures and sub-totals stay unresolved; and A.2 must not be ranked among documents to recover. This rule lives HERE, in the entry, on purpose — relocated 2026-06-02 from the retired pr.46 so that it is read at the exact moment a rescan is being considered, per CLAUDE.md's rule that a standing rule belongs where it fires rather than in a project nobody reopens.

Items excluded by the document

THE INVENTORY EXCLUDES ITEMS, AND SAYS SO. The page-8 note reads: "N.B. — Some Books, Provisions & a Rocking Cradle not included in the appraisement." ⇒ the totals are not a complete statement of the estate's moveable property, by the appraisers' own declaration.

Totals unresolved

Three figures are faintly legible at the foot: 100. 5. 6, 91. 19. 0 and 133. 4. 6. How they relate to the two columns is not clear from the image, and is not guessed at here. Note that 100.5.6 + 91.19.0 = 192.4.6, which is none of them.

Total conflicts with a6

A READING CONFLICT WORTH KNOWING BEFORE ANYONE CITES A NUMBER. The foot of this page is read here as 133. 4. 6, but [A.6] — the Calendar of NJ Wills abstract of this very inventory — prints £132.4.6. A faint 2 misread as a 3 would explain it exactly. NEITHER IS CORRECTED AND NEITHER IS ASSERTED. The document is recorded as read; the abstract is recorded as printed; and because no better scan exists (see scan_is_final) the conflict is not resolvable from the image and should be cited from [A.6], not from here.

Transcription and notes

Provenance, the permanent-scan rule, the excluded items and the unresolved totals are all in the source: and coverage: headers and are not repeated here.

Header, as written

"A true Inventory of the goods and chattels of Capt. B. Cooper of the Township of Lebanon this 31st Day of December 1794."

Appraisers, at the foot: "Appraised by us the Day & year above written — John [his mark X] Hoffman — Dennis Wickoff."

Figures shown [?] are too faint or smudged to read with confidence, and cannot be recovered — see coverage.scan_is_final.
