What this document records

Two jurisdictions

THIS IS A CROSS-JURISDICTIONAL PROBATE, AND THE MACHINERY IS THE INTERESTING PART. The will was proved in Pennsylvania first, then exemplified by the Northampton Register and re-proved in New Jersey under a Warren Co. show-cause order — because the testator held real estate in both states. ⇒ that is why a Pennsylvania doctor's will sits in a New Jersey register at all, and why the same instrument may be found twice.

The codicil enumerates the children

THE CODICIL IS WORTH MORE THAN THE WILL FOR GENEALOGY — it enumerates the children directly, where the will's clauses reach them one at a time through their husbands. Three daughters are documented here who were not in the catalog before — reached in the Fourthly and Fifthly clauses through Rev. Jo… and Theodore I. …. The family reconstruction is on John Cooper Sr.

Daughters named via husbands

SEVERAL DAUGHTERS ARE IDENTIFIED THROUGH THEIR HUSBANDS RATHER THAN BY MAIDEN NAME, which is the ordinary period practice and the reason a Cooper-surname search would never find them — the same structural trap [A.39] documents for Capt. Benjamin's daughters.

Real estate

The estate spans real property in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, which is what forced the double probate. Detail is in the body.

Transcription and notes

Provenance, the two-jurisdiction probate, and why the codicil matters more than the will are in the source: and coverage: headers and are not repeated here. The family reconstruction is on [p.27].
