WWI draft registration card, Third Registration (men 18-45)

Note

THIS IS THE ONLY RECORD IN THE CATALOG THAT GIVES THIS MAN'S EXACT BIRTH DATE: Dec. 22nd, 1875, in his own hand on a form he signed. The catalog had 'DEC 1875' from the 1900 census [D.273] and 21 or 22 December from FamilySearch and Ancestry trees, which are leads only. He signs himself GEORGE WILLIAM COOPER - the fullest and most authoritative version of a name the catalog has had to argue about, since the 1880 sheet calls him 'George W' [D.663] and the 1900 sheet 'William G' [D.273]. The nearest relative is his DAUGHTER, 'Miss Lena May Cooper', at the same address - his wife Rosa had died on 19 February 1918 [A.214], seven months before this card.

Reading notes

THE ADDRESS IS GLEN ROSE, WHICH IS IN SOMERVELL COUNTY, NOT BOSQUE. The card puts 'R.F.D. #1' in the street slot, 'Glen Rose' in the city-or-town slot and 'Texas' in the state slot, leaving the COUNTY slot blank; only the LOCAL BOARD is Bosque County (Clifton). Ancestry's index collapses this into 'Residence Place: Bosque County, Texas', which is the board, not the address. Both are recorded here as they appear. A rural free-delivery route out of Glen Rose can serve addresses across the county line, and he is enumerated in Bosque County in 1920 [D.784]. THE SERIAL NUMBER IS ILLEGIBLE - three very faint digits that do not resolve at 14x. THE REGISTRATION DATE READS 'Sept 4 1918' at 12x - a single numeral 4, not 12. The Third Registration was held on 12 September 1918. The discrepancy is recorded, not reconciled; no date is asserted beyond what the card says. The index renders the daughter as 'Lena Mae'; the card reads 'Lena May'.
