🔑 his mother named by him as nearest relative

Items 19-20, cropped and read at 2×: Mrs. Hannah Cooper (Mother), at Lompoc, Santa Barbara, Cal. ⇒ Hannah A. (Gingrich) Cooper Hannah A. (Gingrich) Cooper is named as his mother by him, on a record he signed, in 1918. The catalog's link from him to her rested on census households ([D.693], [D.694], [D.695], [D.696]) and on two index-only rows for the maiden name; this is the first time he states the relationship himself. He was 36, single, and still giving his mother's house as his nearest relative — of a piece with the man who is a lodger in his father's household in 1910 and 1920 and his brother's in 1940, and who never married.

🖋️ his signature and he spells it with one n

The affirmation line carries his own hand: Glen Sylvester Cooper — read at 3×. The form's filled-in name at item 1 reads Glenn, with two n's, and he signs Glen with one. ⇒ The clerk wrote Glenn; the man wrote Glen. The catalog's file name for him uses Glen, which this vindicates — and it explains why his records split across both spellings (the 1920 census plate has Glenn S., [D.695] line 20). IMAGE-HUNT VALUE: a preference-2 image. Corrected before commit: Glen Sylvester Cooper already held a signature - on his 1942 WWII card, from [G.615], since 2026-10-11 - so this is the SECOND, and it is the EARLIER by twenty-four years. It also gives his middle name in full, which the 1942 one ('Glen Cooper') does not. No true likeness of him has ever been located.

📍 it fills the gap between 1910 and 1920

He is in his father's Lompoc household in 1910 ([D.694]) and 1920 ([D.695]); in September 1918 he is at Lompoc, a labourer working for Tom Archer — a named employer the catalog did not have, and the only occupation detail for him between the 1920 census's "Laborer, Common" and the "None" of his 1942 card.

⚖️ it does not settle the 1930 question

This card is 1918 and says nothing about 1930. It does not resolve whether the Township 5 hired man in the Alice Pittman household (Ancestry coll. 6224 rec. 93069899, ED 0040 sheet 8B) - a candidate rejected on three nativity columns and recorded in Glen Sylvester Cooper's searches:, with no entry of its own — is him. One thing worth recording on that question, though: Ancestry's own suggested-records panel on this card lists that 1930 census row among his records. Per the standing rule an Ancestry suggestion carries no confidence in either direction — it is name-and-date matching, not evidence — but it is the engine's opinion and it runs against the rejection. The California voter registrations, unopened, remain the way to settle it.

What this document does not say

It names no father, gives no street address (only "Lompoc"), and records no prior military service. The order number's prefix letter is written over the printed rule and the registrar's surname is a signature — neither is read with confidence and both are flagged above.
