What this document records
Class ii is the finding
The schedule's own printed definition does the identification work. Class II = "all persons subject to do military duty between the ages of thirty-five and forty-five; AND all married persons… above thirty-five and under forty-five." ⇒ appearing in Class II at 43 attests that he was MARRIED, from the structure of the form rather than from any field on it. Compare [B.10], where David C. Cooper appears in Class I — the same series, sorting men by age and marital state.
Four fields that agree with the catalog
Age 43 on 1 July 1863 ⇒ b. ~1820; residence Freehold; occupation "Book Store"; born New Jersey. Each matches John G Cooper Jr on other evidence — the Find a Grave year, the 1860 and 1870 censuses, and the "Books & Stationary" of those censuses. A bookseller is an uncommon trade, which is what makes a four-field match on one line convincing where four common fields would not be.
The remarks column is empty
Former military service: blank. Remarks: blank. ⇒ no exemption was claimed and no prior service recorded — unlike [B.10]'s David C. Cooper, whose remarks carry two exemption grounds. An empty column is a reading too.
Transcription and notes
Provenance, why appearing in Class II attests that he was married, and what the empty
remarks column establishes are in the source: and coverage: headers and are not repeated
here.
