What this document records

The age is what the entry is for

Age 38 at a July 1814 enlistment ⇒ born about 1776, against [G.90]-tier 1771. A five-year gap. An age given at enlistment is the man's own statement (or the recruiting officer's record of it), which is a different and generally better class of evidence than a memorial date. But it is one number, and it has never been magnified — see the todo.

The remark implies an earlier service

“Re-listed July 1814” ⇒ he had served before, and this register entry is a re-enlistment, not a first enlistment. So there is an earlier record somewhere — the War of 1812 began in June 1812, and a prior term would sit in the M602 carded index.

It places a new jersey man in ohio

Born N.J., enlisting at Xenia, Ohio, in 1814, under Col. Geo. Paull. That is a migration datum in a military record: he was in Greene Co., Ohio by 1814.

What is not on the page

Eyes, hair, complexion, occupation, birth town, enlisting officer and period are ALL blank. The register had columns for a description and recorded none, so there is no physical description to be recovered from this series for this man — the same finding as [B.18]'s Pennsylvania card. Stated so nobody re-orders it hoping for one.
