The Coopers of Long Hill

Document F.108 · Church and Vital Records · transcription: partial

Blenheim Dutch Reformed Church NY register page — 'Jacob H[arvey?/enry?] Wickoff' birth 15 Nov 1802at 'Jacob Wickoff / Theodosia Cooper' parents = 2nd PRIMARY-SOURCE-GRADE BIRTH RECORD for Theodosia × Jacob Wyckoff family children, sibling to [F.107](F.107.yaml) Hariot 1804. Independent corroboration of [L.72](../L-FamilyTrees/L.72.yaml) tree claim that Theodosia (Benjamin Cooper's daughter per tree) had child #3 Jacob Harvey Wyckoff b. 15 Nov 1802 Blenheim Schoharie NY. Cursive middle-name reading ambiguous at current zoom — could be Harvey / Henry / Merry; HIGHER-RES ZOOM REQUIRED per memory feedback_ask_for_zoom_dont_guess.md.

Verbatim — register entry

The image shows a 2-page register spread with multiple family entries arranged in tabular form (Parents' Names | Children | Born [date]). The Wickoff/Cooper entry is in the right column. Verbatim reading at high-res zoom (2026-05-13 maintainer):

Parents:Jacob Wickoff & Theodo[s/t]ia Cooper

Children:Jacob Henry [maintainer high-res-zoom reading; tree-tier alternative reading = "Harvey"; less-likely alternative = "Merry"]

Born:Novem[ber] 15 1802

Wife-name spelling ambiguity at high-res zoom: the cursive of the wife's name shows "Theodo[?]ia" where the 7th letter could be either s(= "Theodosia", L.72 tree-tier reading) or t(= "Theodotia", period-variant spelling). Letter form shows a tall ascender; whether long-s or t is genuinely ambiguous. Both are valid 1800-era spellings of the same name.

Cursive reading — high-resolution zoom 2026-05-13 maintainer

Updated 2026-05-13 with high-res maintainer zoom on the Wickoff/Cooper row.The high-res zoom resolves some ambiguity but does NOT fully lock the child's middle-name reading. Cursive features now visible at high zoom:

Revised ranking of candidate readings post-high-res zoom + 2026-05-13 Ancestry-indexer corroboration:

Update 2026-05-13 v193.38+: Ancestry indexer reading of this exact record (per Jacob Wickoff search results in "U.S., Dutch Reformed Church Records in Selected States, 1639-1989" collection, search results PDF saved as (image held in the family archive) 2026-05-13) = "Jacob Merry"with mother indexed as "Theodolia"(= 4th wife-name spelling variant: Theodosia / Theodotia / Theodolia / Theodotie). This makes the middle-name reading even more uncertain — three independent readers have arrived at three different names: Harvey, Henry, Merry. None of the three matches the others.

  1. "Merry"(= Ancestry-indexer + tied with Henry on visual fit) — M-e-r-r-y; if correct, "Merry" would be an unusual middle name, possibly a family surname in the maternal line. Worth checking L.72 + L.73 trees + Wyckoff genealogy for a "Merry" ancestor surname.
  2. "Henry"(= maintainer high-res-zoom reading + best visual fit per Cooper) — H-e-n-r-y; common period name. If correct, this is L.72 child #3 with middle-name corrected from L.72-tree's "Harvey" reading.
  3. "Harvey"(= L.72 tree-tier reading) — H-a-r-v-e-y; discounted by visual fit (no clear v-valley) AND by Ancestry-indexer reading (= "Merry" not "Harvey"). L.72 tree-tier reading appears to be a tree-builder's inferred or error reading, not register-faithful.

Catalog discipline note: per memory feedback_secondary_source_middle_initial_caution.md (v193.36), L.72-tree's "Harvey" reading = tree-tier secondary-source = primary-source-superseded by F.108 register entry. The PRIMARY-source register entry's correct reading is genuinely uncertain between "Henry" and "Merry" pending further evidence (= possibly Jacob's death record, gravestone, or other primary-source naming him in adulthood).

Per memory feedback_secondary_source_middle_initial_caution.md (v193.36): secondary-source tree readings should NEVER override primary-source cursive verification. If high-res zoom shows "Henry" most plausibly = the primary-source-grade Blenheim register entry attests "Jacob Henry Wickoff" b. 15 Nov 1802 = L.72-tree's "Jacob Harvey" reading may need correction.

Date + place lock confirms identity regardless of middle-name reading: Jacob ___ Wickoff b. 15 Nov 1802 Blenheim Schoharie NY at Jacob Wickoff + Theodosia Cooper parents = unambiguously L.72 child #3 (= unique date+place match). Whether middle name is Henry, Harvey, or Merry, this is the same person.

Note:All left/right-column readings are at current zoom = partial/tentative. Per memory feedback_ask_for_zoom_dont_guess.md, higher-res zoom recommended for verbatim-level transcription of surrounding entries.

The register appears to cover roughly 1797-1803 baptisms at Blenheim Dutch Reformed Church. NEXT-PRIORITY register pages= pages adjacent to this one for further Theodosia × Jacob Wyckoff family entries (= Gertrude 1795 + Jane Barkley 1811 + other L.72 children's baptisms).
