Reading notes

Ancestry indexes Harry's birth as 24 Mar 1873; that date could not be seen on this image. The time-of-record column for these rows is ditto marks under 'July 1[8?] 1873' in row 1. Rows 7 and 9 are other Cooper families (R. M. and P. A.; Zach. and S. E.), not linked here.

Row 9 second initial is contested 2026-10-18

Row 9's child was read J. W. on 2026-10-08 and J. H. on 2026-10-18 — re-read at 7x on a native crop of the 5212-px plate. What is actually there is two faded near-parallel ascenders with a connecting hook and a period; no crossbar survives, and a W's pointed feet are not visible either. Neither reading is safe, so the cell is now recorded as J. [H or W]. rather than silently re-asserted. Row 9's sex cell was also re-read: it is a ditto, but with an overwritten character struck through before it, so the carried-down Male is not clean. Low stakes — the child is unlinked and both parents are unidentified.

The date column is now a third time unreadable 2026-10-18

Third independent attempt, and it should be the last. The date-of-birth column was re-cropped 2026-10-18 at 5x and 7x with ImageOps.autocontrast(cutoff=0.05) — a harder stretch than the 2026-10-14 pass — and rows 7-9's date cells resolve to scattered ink flecks with no letterforms at all, while the row numbers 7 and 9 in the adjacent column come up clean at the same settings. ⇒ The writing did not survive the scan; this is a property of the image, not of the magnification, and no further zoom will recover it. A different capture of the same page (FamilySearch's own copy of DGS 4208999, or the original volume) is the only route to these three dates.
