Bio, as given on the memorial:
Son of James and Abigail Cooper Married Mary Jane Doty 20 April, 1751 at Morristown,Morris, New Jersey, USA ∼ In 1777 or 1778, Moses Cooper started with a large family from New Jersey for Washington County, Pennsylvania, crossing the Allegheny Mountains. Some of the company traveled by horseback. Moses Cooper, failed to reach the journey's end and died on the way in Fayette County, Pennsylvania where he is buried. (some say he was buried at Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. He is also shown to be buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Amity, Washington County, Pennsylvania.) He had sold his property in New Jersey, receiving in payment thereof "Continental Money," which had so depreciated at the time of his death as to be comparatively worthless. The family, now almost penniless, continued their journey westward, arriving in course of time at their destination. There is some controversy as to whom Moses married. One reference says Mary Coleman and one says Mary Doty. In the History of Washington County, Pennsylvania by J. H. Beers, 1839, on page 498, his grandson Jonas Cooper says that he married Mary Doty. According to other records Moses married Mary Coleman. However, the Pilgrim Edward Doty Society wrote a letter to and stated that Moses Cooper did NOT marry Mary Doty. Note from researcher Barbara G. Ludwick: I have found that most people doing genealogy on the Cooper's have Mary Doty as Moses Cooper's wife. Some even put, probably from confusion, Mary Doty Coleman. According to the letter from the Pilgrim Edward Doty Society, and the Will of Mary Coleman's father, plus Moses being a witness to Ephriam Coleman's Will, who is the brother of Mary Coleman, plus Moses and Mary named one of their sons Ephriam and one of their daughters Penelope after Mary's mother. I believe that Mary Coleman NOT Mary Doty, married Moses Cooper. Also there is another letter that was sent to my aunt that states Moses married Mary Colemen. This person copied it from an old family Bible. Moses saw service in the Revolutionary War.
