Heading and copyists

MIDDLESEX COUNTY GRAVESTONES Runyon Family Burying Ground, Piscataway Township Copied March 26, 1938, by Donald A. Sinclair; and on March 29, 1941, by Oliver D. Drake and Russell B. Rankin, Members of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey

Location

The note places the ground on the north side of the Possumtown road, slightly southeast of its intersection with the Fieldville road, southwest of Ambrose Brook; "the plot is small and neatly enclosed". It quotes Clayton: "There are a large number here buried without headstones".

The gravestones

Blackford, Samuel, d. April 16, 1851, aged 89 years & 5 months [Manning.]. Harris, Runyan [No stone]; wife Sarah, d. Dec. 11, 1804, in 1[?]th year. Runyon, Benjamin, d. Nov. 3, 1785, in 58th year; wife Ann, d. Aug. 19, 1805, in 75th year. Runyon, Justus, d. July 15, 1835, in 49th year [L. Ward. NB.]; wife Hannah, d. Sept. 18, 1855, aged 67 years; daughter Maria Stell, d. Dec. 9, 1825, in 14th year. [Runyon]. "P R." (Field stone). Runyon, Peter, d. May 19, 18[20], [in 77th year]; wife [Susannah, d. 1824, aged 77 years]. (The face of Susannah's stone is entirely scaled off and part of Peter's inscription has also disappeared. The missing data, inclosed here in brackets, have been supplied from Clayton's Hist. of Union & Middlesex Co.'s, p. 600. According to that copy, however, Peter Runyon died in 1821 - evidently an error, since his will was dated Nov. 26, 1819, and probated June 23, 1820. See Middlesex Co. Wills, B:451). Stelle, David [No stone]; wife Rachel [No stone]; daughter Susanna, d. May 21, 1811, in 9th year; son David, d. Sept. 13, 181[?], aged 3 years & 10 months.
