Bio, as given on the memorial:
[From the Journal and Messenger.] A Biographical Sketch and Funeral Notice of Father Woodruff. Seth Woodruff was born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey, October 20, 1776. He learned the trade of brick laying, and lived for some time in the city of New York. Was married December 20, 1800, to Sally Crane. Settled in Newark, New Jersey, where he resided till October 1, 1816; at which time he removed with his family, wife and five children, to Louisville, Kentucky. From Louisville, he moved to New Albany, the 7th of March, 1817, where he resided til his death. His first wife died the last day of July, 1819. He was baptized in October, 1819; having previous to this time been a nominal member of the Presbyterian Church – he has been admitted through the outer gate by birthright and infant sprinkling, and having purchased a pew at a high price, he sometimes playfully remarked, that he had filled the highest seat in the synagogue. His was said to be the first baptism performed in the Ohio river on the north side, from Lawrenceburg to the mouth of the river. . . About the 1st of December, 1820, father Woodruff with seven others, were constituted into a Church – the first Baptist Church in New Albany. Soon after, he was licensed to preach. He was ordained, and for many years was pastor of the Church. He also preached in the surrounding country. His labors, at that early day, were considerably blessed; and as he received nothing for preaching, he sometimes observed, when giving a history of his labors, that he had supported a missionary for some fourteen or sixteen years. Father Woodruff continued to preach, occasionally, and especially on funeral occasions, up to the time of his illness (from the dropsy) which commenced about nine months before his decease. He was in office almost all the time during his residence in New Albany. First justice of the peace, then associate judge, and last, judge of the Probate Court, which office he held for many years, and till a short time previous to his death. Father Woodruff, when in office, was a strict conservator of the peace – for good order in society and for obedience to its laws. . . Brother Woodruff was married four times; he had six children by his first wife, and two by his third; all living but the eldest who died in youth. The fourth wife who was a Mrs. Wells, to whom he was married 22d June, 1843, still survives him. E. P. BOND. New Albany, October 14, 1852. - New Albany Daily Ledger 03 Nov 1852
