"...John Ludlow, came to the Northwestern Territory in 1810, locating in what was afterwards Hamilton county, and served as the first sheriff of that county. Stephen Ludow was born May 5, 1790, in Morris county, New Jersey, and was subsequently a pioneer settler of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, where he was engaged in mercantile pursuits for many years. In 1820 he was one of the commissioners appointed by the legislature to select four sections of land granted by the United States as a site for the [state] capital. The commission met in June, 1820, and chose the present site at Indianapolis. At the age of seventy years, Mr. Ludlow accepted the position of assistant United States surveyor, and was active in the work for several years. He married Ann Porter, a daughter of John Porter."-- From "A History of the Northern Peninsula of Michigan and its People" written by Alvah L. Sawyer and published by The Lewis Publishing Company of Chicago, 1911.

Image (newspaper death notice):

DIED, At his late residence in the vicinity of Lawrenceburgh, on Thursday, March 22nd, Mr. STEPHEN LUDLOW--in the 78th year of his age. His disease was a lingering Chronic affection of several months. He leaves a widow and large family of children to moun his loss. Mr. Ludlow was one of the Pioneers of the West, having settled in Cincinnati in A. D. 1790, and soon after engaged with his uncle, Col. Israel Ludlow, in surveying the public land belonging to the Government.--For some short time after the death of his uncle in 1804, he was connected with a mill establishment on Mill Creek; a few miles north of Cincinnati, at a place then called Ludlow's station; but soon left it to others, and engaged in Mercantile business at Dayton, Ohio. He did not continue long at the last named place, as the country was too new and population too sparce to make his business very profitable. In the year 1808 he established himself as a merchant in Lawrenceburgh, and by strict attention to business, acquired a considerable property, but in a few years, lead by his ruling passion for business, engaged extensively in agricultural pursuits, in which he continued through life, and by prudent management and persevering industry, accumulated of the world's goods an abundant supply for his bereaved widow and fatherless children. One of the prominent traits of his character was to attend strictly to his own business, and not to m[e]ddle with other men's matters.
