Bio, as given on the memorial:

Son of Justice J. Cooper and Hannah Kemp. He married Elizabeth Y. Masters in Warren, NJ about 1848. Their 9 children are listed with his wife. Israel died age 62 years 2 months and 28 days. Inscription "A loved one has gone from our circle, on earth we shall meet him no more, he has gone to his home in heaven, and all his afflictions are o'er." The Osceola Sentinel, Thursday, June 7, 1888, pg.3, col. 1 Israel Cooper died at Hopeville, May 31st and was buried June 1st. He had been sick for a good while, but we have no particulars of his illness. He was one of the old settlers of Doyle township, where he has lived perhaps more than twenty years. He had just had a new house completed and moved into it. He leaves a wife and several children, mostly grown and settled. Military: According to the Civil War Pension Records, Israel joined the war on September 27, 1864 and was discharged June 5, 1865. He was part of Company I, 20th Regiment, Illinois Infantry, and held the rank of Private. He fought on the Union side. Family history says that he had a brother who went to fight for the Confederate side and had nothing to do with the family after that.
