Identification

Author: C. Fred Hockenbary of Summit NJ. Dedicated to daughters Mary Catherine Walling + Lois Ann Makowka. Acknowledgments to Robert Hartlaub of Summit NJ (= lineage-chart preparer). Published privately 1 October 1976.

Book scope: traces the author's maternal Cooper line from John Cooper 1594 of Olney Buckinghamshire England through Phebe Lydia Cooper (= author's mother, m. Charles Frederick Hockenbary). 6-section structure: I narrative + II numbered genealogical index + III wills/births/deaths/weddings reproductions + IV references + V name index + VI lineage chart (= separate brown envelope).

Genre: privately-published single-family genealogy with substantial primary-source citations (NJ Archives docket numbers, will books + page numbers, cemetery + church records). Comparable in tier to a thorough NEHGS-form genealogy with maintainer-research depth. Treat dates + parentages as probable when supported by Hockenbary's cited primary source (= wills, deeds, vital records); possible for tree-tier-only claims.

SCOPE-LIMITED SCAN per pre-1750 rule

this book's post-1750 individuals were NOT cataloged.

Rationale: Hockenbary's book documents the LI English-colonial Cooper line through Nathan I × Mary Miller of Roxbury NJ = catalog's fam.1/fam.2. Per project pr.26 Roxbury Cooper family out-of-scope (RESOLVED).md, the fam.2 Roxbury Cooper line is out-of-scope for the Daniel Sr line research that is the catalog's central subject. However, fam.2 has recent (v233) catalog activity surrounding fam.2 ↔ Daniel Sr line possible cross-threads, so the pre-1750 generations (= Daniel Sr's contemporaneous generation) ARE catalog-relevant.

Pre-1750 individuals catalogued. Post-1750 individuals (= Nathan I's grandchildren born 1750+, great-grandchildren, etc., through to Phebe Lydia Cooper ~1880s + the author Hockenbary 1900s) are NOT cataloged under this scan.

Re-scan trigger: if pr.71 fam.2 ↔ Peter Cooper kinship or pr.2 Daniel Sr father search confirms fam.2 kinship to Daniel Sr's line, re-scan this book to catalog post-1750 individuals.

Data from the document — Pre-1750 generations [verbatim/structured]

John Cooper 1594-1662 of Olney, Bucks, England → Lynn, Mass → Southampton LI

"John Cooper who arrived at Boston, Massachusetts, in June, 1635 on the boat known as 'The Hopewell' […] John Cooper and his wife, Wybroe, were from Olney, County of Bucks, also known as Buckinghamshire, England. At the time that they signed on in April of that year in London, John Cooper was aged 41 and Wybroe was aged 42. With them were four children; namely, Mary Cooper, aged 13; John Cooper, aged 10; Thomas Cooper, aged 7; and Martha Cooper, aged 5; and also a servant by the name of Philip Phillips."

NEW datum: Wybroe age 42 in 1635 = b. ~1593. Plus servant Philip Phillips = NEW name-roster candidate.

John Cooper b. 1594; will dated 6 May 1662 + 5 children (= same per Chambers).

5 Children of John 1594 × Wybroe

  1. Mary Cooper b. 1622 m. (1) Henry Pierson (m. 1647? d. 1680) (2) Rev. Seth Fletcher 1682
  2. John Cooper 2d 1625-1677 m. Sarah Mew (d. 1688)
  3. Thomas Cooper b. 1628 d. 1637 m. Mary Raynor (dau. Thurston Raynor)
  4. Martha Cooper m. Ellis Cook
  5. Ann/Hannah Cooper m. (1) John White 1635 d. 1662 (2) Zerubbabel Phillips 1663 d. 1668 - Possibly Emma Cooper b. ~1620 d. <1666 m. Thomas Topping (per Hockenbary inference from John's will mentioning Topping grandchildren)

NEW maiden-name attestation: Sarah Mew (wife of John 2d 1625-1677). Previously catalog had her as "Sarah ___" per Chambers. Hockenbary p. 10 attests her maiden name was Mew (= "I am not positive of her maiden name", but Hockenbary records it). → NEW name.291 Sarah Mew Cooper.

John Cooper 2d 1625-1677 × Sarah Mew 1688 — children

Per Hockenbary p. 10: - Samuel Cooper — d. intestate; widow Mary granted letters of administration 4 August 1714 - James Cooper (= our line; b. 1654) m. Hannah Pierson - Thomas Cooper d. 22 Nov 1691 — wife Johanna (who after his death m. Lt. Joseph Pierson, 4 children John 1635 / Joanna / Abraham 1686-1689) - Possibly David Cooper + daughter Mary (= per Hockenbary's hypothesis, not substantiated)

James Cooper 1654 × Hannah Pierson — children (per Hockenbary p. 14)

James Cooper b. 1654 (= NEW datum; Chambers said "1650") = first magistrate of South Hampton LI = "Justice James Cooper". Will dated 9 Nov 1719 + codicil 20 Jun 1722, filed New York County. Wife Hannah Pierson (= dau. of Col. Henry Pierson 1652; brother David Pierson named in James's will as brother-in-law; "H.P." silver spoons primary-source for "Hannah Pierson" identification).

NEW maiden-name attestation: Hannah Pierson wife of James 1654 — primary-source via 8 silver spoons marked "H.P." mentioned in James's 1719 will. → NEW name.292 Hannah Pierson Cooper.

6 children of James × Hannah Pierson: 1. Nathan I Cooper b. 1696 d. 1788 m. Mary Miller 8 Oct 1717 East Hampton — = [[p.462]] 2. James Cooper b. 1700 d. 1753 m. (1) Abigail (d. 1734) (2) Mary — = [[p.212 James Cooper Jr 1700-1753]]; 12 children = James + Zebulon + Stephen + Moses + Elizabeth + Silas + Benjamin + Philip + Abigail + Mary + Ezekial + Selah 3. Hannah Cooper d. 1719 m. Capt. Thomas Stephens b. 1646 d. 26 Nov 1700 (= 1st wife of Capt. Stephens; she was son of Thomas Stephens who was raised by Ellis Cook + Martha Cooper Cook). Note: Hockenbary p. 15-16 — confusion between Hannah Cooper × Thomas Stephens vs Capt. Thomas Stephens b. 1733 d. 1779 (= different couple/generation) 4. Elizabeth Cooper m. Benjamin Marshall 1682-1752 (= son of Joseph Marshall × Elizabeth Howell of Southampton). 3 children: John + Esther m. Blachely + Joseph Marshall — → NEW name.293 Elizabeth (Cooper) Marshall 5. Susanna Cooper b. 1701 d. unknown — under 18 + unmarried at father's 1719 will; received £300 → NEW name.294 Susanna Cooper 6. Richard Cooper d. ~late 1722 — predeceased father; not named in 1722 codicil; possibly Hannah Pierson died in childbirth with Richard who died as infant → NEW name.295 Richard Cooper

James 1700-1753's son Moses (= one of the 12 unidentified-by-mother children) — per Hockenbary p. 15 (citing Howell 1887): "Moses, one of the sons of James Cooper, removed with all of his family to Washington County, Pennsylvania, in or about the year 1777 crossing the mountains on horseback but died just before reaching his destination. He married first Mary Coleman and secondly Mary Doty, and had children as follows: Zebulon, Moses, Nathaniel, Lemuel, Ephraim, Eunice, Mary [m. Jeremiah Jaggar of Southampton], Elizabeth, Penelope and Stephen Cooper."

= matches catalog [[p.211 Moses Cooper Sr 1727-1778]] m. Mary Coleman per existing catalog memory; corrects Perry I.132's "Moses m. Mary Doty" to "1st Coleman + 2nd Doty" framing.

CORRECTION: Moses Cooper is James Cooper 1700-1753's son, NOT Nathan I × Mary Miller's son per Hockenbary. Chambers I.138 listed "VI. MOSES, prob. s. of Nathan" — = Chambers wrong; Moses was Nathan I's nephew (= James 1700-1753's son), not Nathan I's son. Catalog [[name.258 Moses Cooper]] needs update.

Nathan I Cooper 1696-1788 × Mary Miller m. 8 Oct 1717 East Hampton — children (per Hockenbary p. 19)

8 children: 1. Mary Cooper b. 4 Apr 1718 d. 7 Jul 1787 m. Henry Wick 12 Feb 1735 — = [[name.62]] Mary Cooper b. 1718 wife of Henry Wick. = Tempe Wick's mother. Will Morris docket #693N B.20 p.450 dated 13 March 1786. 2. Elizabeth Cooper b. 1724 m. Joshua Sayre (= dau. of Thomas Sayre + descendant of Bedfordshire England Sayre family Southampton LI 1640). 12 children: Sarah + Joshua + Edith + Paul + Silas + Caleb + Thomas + Eunice + William + Enoch + Rufus + Ruth. = [[name.66 Elizabeth Cooper]] catalog match 3. Nathan Cooper [II] b. 2 Feb 1725 d. 30 Dec 1797 m. Mehetabel Seward 1748 — = [[p.461]] ( Hockenbary's "2 Feb" vs catalog's "22 Feb" per G.188 — 20-day discrepancy; G.188 stone-tier prevails) 4. Hannah Cooper (= bap. 1727/1728 per L.122 + Chambers) m. Satterly per Nathan I's 1788 will = "daughter Hannah Satterly" → updates [[name.282 Hannah Cooper of East Hampton 1728]] with husband identification 5. Henry Cooper b. 29 Oct 1733 Mendham d. 1819 — = [[p.503 Henry Miller Cooper 1733-1819]] 6. James Cooper = Hockenbary lists in 8-child roster; per Chambers's "1770 Wm. Allen mortgage 96 ac Breeches Tract" attestation; b. before 1750 since adult-capacity in 1770 7. Davenport Cooper b. 1720 d. 11 Jan 1789 (per L.122) — Nathan I's 1788 will gives Davenport £10 8. ** Martha Jane Cooper** — NEW Nathan I daughter per Hockenbary p. 19; not in Chambers, Seward 1948, or L.122 trees. → NEW name.293 Martha Jane Cooper

Nathan I × Mary Miller had 8 children per Hockenbary vs Chambers's 6 + Seward 1948's "we have the record of only 3 of Nathan II's children". Hockenbary's 8-child roster + identifications = catalog-defining for fam.2 Gen 4.

Nathan I Cooper 1788 Will Body [verbatim partial, per Hockenbary p. 19-20]

Docket #697N Book B-31 page 179 NJ State Archives. Will dated 12 July 1788, proved 7 August 1788 (= died between those dates).

CATALOG IMPLICATIONS:

  1. Nathan I's land was on "south side of the road leading from Mendham to Roxbury (Route 24)" = primary-source-locatable Cooper-family residence (= Chester Twp area)
  2. Adjacent to Daniel Seward (= Mehitabel Seward's brother [[p.464]]'s brother = brother of Nathan II's wife) — primary-source-attests Cooper-Seward adjacent land
  3. Nathan II got only 5 shillings = had received pre-mortem (= consistent with Nathan II's own substantial 1797 estate per A.15)
  4. Mary Clover got 5 shillings + "received prior" = Mary Clover is Nathan I's DAUGHTER, NOT Nathan II's daughter as catalog [[p.466 Mary Cooper Clover 1756]] had attributed
  5. Hannah Satterly got 5 shillings + "received prior" = Hannah's husband surname = Satterly (= per Chambers's bap. 1728 daughter; Hockenbary's identification matches Nathan I's 1788 will)
  6. Sons Henry + James as principal heirs + executors = NOT Nathan II
  7. Davenport explicit (= primary-source-corroborates [[L.122]] Davenport 1720-1789 attestation)
  8. 7000 continental dollars = Nathan I held substantial Revolutionary War-era continental currency

Nathan II × Mehitabel Seward 1812 Will Body [verbatim partial, per Hockenbary p. 28-29]

A.15 docket 969N + Mehitabel's own 1812 will at Morris Surrogate Will Book A p. 374 dated 19 Mar 1812 prob. 30 Aug 1812 (= her death 15 Apr 1812).

Mehitabel's 1812 will primary-source-confirms catalog v233 "Samuel had 1st wife + 4 daughters" hypothesis:

"She gave to her son Samuel the remainder of the beds, curtains, and all of her wearing apparel that he may give same to his daughters, which he had by his first marriage; namely, Mary Hunt, Mehetabel Bun, Elizabeth Bun, Harriet Lozey."

Mehitabel's 1812 will EXPLICITLY refers to Samuel's "first marriage" daughters = primary-source-attestation of the v233 two-marriage framework for [[p.472 Samuel Cooper Sr]]. The 4 named "first marriage" daughters: - Mary Hunt (= [[name.62]] occurrence, Mary Cooper m. Hunt per Chambers I.138 + L.120) - Mehetabel Bun = [[p.471 Mehitable Cooper Bunn 1782-1861]] - Elizabeth Bun = [[p.474 Elizabeth Cooper Bunn 1785-1859]] - Harriet Lozey = [[p.504 Harriet Cooper Losey 1787-1820]]

= Primary-source confirms catalog v233 1st-wife biological-children attribution: Mary + Mehitabel + Elizabeth + Harriet were Samuel's "first marriage" daughters. Elizabeth Brown 1765 was their stepmother from 1795.

Plus Mehitabel's 1812 will: - Beulah (= Beulah Ann Cooper [[p.498]]) named as Abraham's daughter (= matches catalog) - Negro females June + Rose to son Samuel - Carpet to Elizabeth Cooper, wife of Nathan Cooper = wife of Nathan III [[p.465]] = Elizabeth Wills - Executors: friends Stephen Burton + Joseph Hedges

Abraham Cooper 1762-1818 Will Body [verbatim partial, per Hockenbary p. 30]

Will dated 8 Sep 1818 prob. 5 Oct 1818 (= deathbed will, died 13 Sep 1818).

Primary-source land roster for Abraham: Schooley's Mountain 250 ac + Haght Place 100 ac + 6 ac Parker wood. Updates [[p.468]].

Mary Cooper Wick 1787 Will Body [verbatim partial, per Hockenbary p. 24-25]
