Verbatim — key Vol 3 Cooper attestations

Apollos Cooper Judge of Oneida Co. NY (PDF p. 408, book p. 383)

"[Abstract.] John Cooper of Trenton, Oneida Co., N. Y., appoints Abraham Cooper of same place his attorney to sell all his real estate in Suffolk Co. Dec 11 1808. Before Apollos Cooper Judge."

"[Abstract.] Nathan Cooper records birth of slave children Milcent 1801 & Prince William 1806."

= Important social-history datum. Nathan Cooper here = post-1788 (= NOT Nathan I 1696-1788; possibly his son 40 Nathan or grandson). 1801-1806 NY State began requiring registration of slave-children for eventual emancipation per Gradual Manumission Act 1799.

James Cooper land tracing 1697 → sons (PDF p. 399, book p. 374)

"...sold it to James Cooper, 1697, (see volume 2, printed Records, pages 275 and 335,) who gave it to his [sons]..."

Primary-source-LOCKED James Cooper 1697 land purchase + transmission to sons. This James = Howell '8 James' = our [p.213]. The 1697 purchase confirms his adult-active status 1697 = consistent with our updated p.213 birth window. Vol 2 cross-reference (pp. 275 + 335) provides additional primary-source detail not yet extracted from I.149.

Cooper-community-leadership 1790s-1800s

Multiple years of town meetings list Coopers in town offices: - Caleb Cooper Esq. (= Howell '20 Caleb b. 1745' Sag Harbor) — Trustee, school house moderator (PDF pp. 394, 396, 400) - John Cooper — Pound Master multiple years (PDF pp. 400, 407, 409) - Nathan Cooper — Pound Master + committee on encroachments (PDF pp. 400, 401, 407, 409) - Ananias Cooper — Constable + Overseer of Highways (PDF pp. 406, 407, 409) - Capt. Zophar Cooper + Mr. Abraham Cooper — Revolutionary-War-era removal-license recipients (PDF p. 434)

Zophar Cooper = Howell '35 Zophar' (= son of '13 John'); Vol 3 attests his Captain rank during the Revolutionary War. NEW catalog significance.

Vol 3 PDF p. 432 (book p. 407) — note on early settlement

"Page 22. The land laid out for John Cooper is probably where the house of John F. Youngs now stands, on south side of road..."

= 19th-century editor's note tying John Sr's 17th-c. land grant to modern (1878) topography.
