The Coopers of Long Hill

Document I.161 · Published Genealogies and County Histories · transcription: verbatim

David de Sola Pool, Portraits Etched in Stone: Early Jewish Settlers, 1682–1831 (Columbia Univ. Press, 1952) — the definitive ~160-biography roster of colonial Congregation Shearith Israel (NYC). Cooper-relevant: (1) p.448 — Abraham Coriell, merchant, sued by Saul Brown (Pardo), Shearith Israel's first hazzan, in NYC court 30 Sept 1702; (2) p.174 — Moses Curiel (= Geronimo Nunes da Costa, the Amsterdam Sephardic patriarch) cited as a Marrano name-reversion. NO Coriell appears as a synagogue MEMBER (= family was Christian); the Shearith-Israel-membership path for Daniel Sr's origin is NULL, but the 1702 hazzan-lawsuit documents the Coriells in the NYC Sephardic-Jewish commercial orbit. [verbatim]

Transcription and notes

Searched for p.1 Daniel Cooper Sr's origin via the only NYC synagogue (~1700), since his biological paternal line is Sephardic Curiel/Coriell (pr.16 / I.155). Pool's book is the definitive ~160-biography roster of colonial Congregation Shearith Israel members 1682–1831 (built from the congregation's own archives). A full-text surname sweep returned exactly the two items below — no Coriell appears as a congregation member/biography.

Data from the document [verbatim]

1. p.448 — Abraham Coriell, merchant (in the biography of Saul Brown/Pardo, the first hazzan):

"He [Saul Brown] was alive on April 28, 1702, and the court records have on the calendar for 30th September, 1702, Saul Brown's suit against Abraham Coriell, merchant. Some time between then and September 28, 1703, he died, for on that date in the tax list of assessments … it is the widow Brown who was assessed …"

( "he died" = Saul Brown, not Coriell — confirmed by "widow Brown" assessed by 28 Sept 1703.)

2. p.174 / (text) — Moses Curiel as a Marrano name-reversion:

"… in the early history of the Amsterdam Sephardic Jewish community, the parent community of the one in New Amsterdam, we find Francisco Nunez Pereyra taking the name David Abendana on his reversion to Judaism, or Geronimo Nunes da Costa reappearing as Moses Curiel …"

(Index also lists: "Coriell, Abraham, 448"; "Curiel, Moses, 174"; "Costa, … Nunes da, 14,15,17,174,309".)
