What is transcribed: The 1884 county history's Tymochtee Township chapter, which prints the township's 1845 assessment (owners of real estate with section and acreage; owners of town lots in McCutchenville, Belle Vernon, Peru, Old Tymochtee, Mexico and North Tymochtee; owners of personal property), and its church histories. The whole 1884 text and both 1913 scans were also grepped for Cooper.

What this document records

What it says

"Samuel Cowper" is on the 1845 Tymochtee list of OWNERS OF PERSONAL PROPERTY (p. 1035). No Cooper, Cowper or Coopr is on the list of OWNERS OF REAL ESTATE (pp. 1031–1034). For Section 12 the real-estate list prints "Copes, J. and P., Section 12, 80 acres." "Green Cooper" is named among those who met in the winter of 1875 to organize the Evangelical Chapel at Mexico (p. 1039). The book holds no Cooper biography; the 1913 Baughman volume names no Cooper of this family (its one Cooper is Robert P. Cooper of Martins Ferry, Ohio).

What it does not say

The printed list is the 1884 compiler's transcription of an 1845 duplicate that this catalog has not seen. It gives no ages, relationships or origins. No Israel Cooper, John Cooper or George Cooper is on either 1845 list.

Evangelical Chapel, Mexico.—In the winter of 1875, several persons interested in this cause met at the residence of St. John Miller to discuss the advisability of organizing a church of the Evangelical denomination. These were Mr. and Mrs. Miller, J. Delaplane and wife, D. Miller, Mrs. Shuler, Mrs. Cline and Green Cooper. The first public meeting was held in the Methodist Episcopal Church, … The church edifice, a frame structure, 36x48 feet, was erected in 1876, …

p. 1039 — Methodist Episcopal Church of Mexico, its officials [verbatim, read at 5x]

Added 2026-10-30 from the page image already filed here. The paragraph immediately below the Evangelical Chapel one, on the same page, and it names two men the catalog already holds.

Methodist Episcopal Church of Mexico.—… There are at present twenty-four members, and the officials are Samuel Spencer, Jordan Gault, William Gibbs, Theodore Blair and Dow Tuttle, Trustees; J. C. Gault, Class-leader; and Dow Tuttle, Steward.

Why it was worth going back for. [A.189], the 1886 Wyandot administrator's bond on the estate of "G. G. Cooper", carries [name.615] Samuel Spencer as surety and first-named appraiser and [name.614] Jordon Gault as the other surety. This page shows both men were trustees of the Methodist Episcopal church in Mexico two years before George Green Cooper is recorded at Mexico in the 1880 census and twelve years before they bonded his estate. ⇒ They are his own village's church officers, which is exactly who stands surety for a neighbour. It does not identify the decedent — [A.189] names only initials, and that entry's identification still rests on the [K.102]/[K.103] Mexico lot match. What this adds is that the bondsmen were local men of his village, not strangers, which makes the Mexico reading of those initials the natural one rather than merely the available one. Graded as corroboration, not proof; no fact is written into any person header from it.

Whole-volume sweep [desc]

Cooper occurs 14 times in the 1884 text: Cooper K. Watson (a politician) five times; the cooper's trade four times; "Rev. Cooper" (a pastor of the Wyandot mission charge); "Aaron Cooperrider"; a privates list "… C. Copier, S. Cooper, A. Covill …" (Company G, near p. 446); a privates list "… N. Cowgill, C. Cooper, R. B. Craig …" (another regiment's roster); and "Green Cooper" above. The two muster-list names were NOT opened on the page and their regiments were not established — OCR-tier only.
