What this document records

The paragraph verbatim

"Mr. and Mrs. Rush Hartung and Mrs. P. Sharps Hartung, of Hope, went to Newark last week to spend a few days with relatives. Mrs. P. S. Hartung visited her sister, Mrs. Pierce, at Stroudsburg, Pa., before leaving for Newark."

🎯 it states the sisterhood in so many words

"Mrs. P. S. Hartung visited HER SISTER, Mrs. Pierce, at Stroudsburg, Pa." ⇒ A contemporary printed statement that the Mrs. Pierce of Stroudsburg is the sister of Mrs. P. S. Hartung — i.e. that Sadie S. (Cooper) Pierce Sadie S. (Cooper) Pierce and Elizabeth W. (Cooper) Hartung Elizabeth W. (Cooper) Hartung are sisters. The catalog already held that, both being daughters of Robert Marshall Cooper Robert M. Cooper on [D.297] (1900), and [F.349] calls Robert L. Pierce her nephew. What is new is the KIND of evidence: this is a statement made in 1911, while both women were living, by a local correspondent who knew them — independent of the census that put them in one household as children.

🗓️ and it dates the stroudsburg connection

Sadie was already at Stroudsburg by March 1911 — consistent with [J.510]'s "resident since 1907" — and Elizabeth W. (Cooper) Hartung was visiting her there thirteen years before she moved there herself (about 1924, per [J.512]). ⇒ The Stroudsburg tie is a family one of long standing, not a late-life move to a stranger's town.

📌 rush hartung again

"Mr. and Mrs. Rush Hartung" travel with her. Their household is at Hope on [E.34] (1915) and widowed next door to hers on [D.846] (1920). Still no statement of kinship between Rush and Peter Sharps Hartung Peter S. — the column puts the two couples in each other's company, which is suggestive and is not a relationship.

What this document does not say

It does not give Mrs. Pierce's forename, her husband's name, or the sisters' maiden name; the identification of "Mrs. Pierce" as Sadie S. (Cooper) Pierce rests on Stroudsburg, the date, and the catalog's existing sibling link, not on anything in the paragraph.
