Reading notes: three coopers on one page and they are not the same kind of fact

[desc] E. E. Cooper holds two township offices - Treasurer and Custodian of School Funds - and is paid $10 and $25 for them. Clarence Cooper owes $6.08 and Asher Cooper owes $1.00. ⇒ At least two and probably three Cooper households in Green Township, Sussex Co., in 1912, one of them holding office.

CORRECTED BEFORE THIS ENTRY LEFT THE SESSION. The first draft said of Clarence and of E. E. that neither was "in the catalog". That was written without grepping, and it is wrong. Clarence W. Cooper is Clarence Cooper OF GREEN TWP, SUSSEX CO. (10 Oct 1882 - 30 Nov 1950), second son of Andrew J. Cooper Andrew J. Cooper - the right name in the right township, aged 30 in 1912, and he died there. The catalog also holds many strings matching E. E. Cooper, none of them so far placed in this office. ⇒ The value of the page is not three new names; it is that it puts a CATALOG PERSON in his township in a specific year, with a sum that implies property, and that it names an office-holding Cooper beside him.

Reading notes: the dollar is the same dollar as in 1920

[desc] Asher Cooper owes exactly $1.00 here in 1912 and exactly $1.00 in [J.608]'s 1920 list - and in both years the one-dollar entries are the commonest kind, against sums of $6.08, $8.47, $49.13, $67.76 and $79.62 for others. That is the signature of a POLL TAX in both years, and it means neither notice is evidence that he held land in the township. ⇒ Two sightings eight years apart, and in neither is he a property owner - a man of taxable age resident in Green Township in 1912 and still in 1920.

Reading notes: one name not resolved

[desc] The fourth delinquent reads "Joseph Couit, Jr" at 4x - the surname could be Couit, Court or Coult. Transcribed with [?] rather than guessed.

Reading notes: clarence coopers sum is different and that is the interesting part

[desc] $6.08 is not a poll tax. Eleven of the sixteen delinquents in [J.608]'s 1920 list and most of the small entries here owe exactly $1.00; $6.08 sits with $8.47, $5.08 and the larger property sums. ⇒ Clarence W. Cooper Clarence Cooper probably held assessable property in Green Township in 1912, where Asher did not. His file records a birth, a death and a probate there but nothing about land, so this is a small addition to it - and a pointer to the Sussex County deeds.

T1 answered at index tier e e cooper is elmer e cooper

Run 2026-11-02, the same hour, and it answers t1 as far as an index can. FamilySearch United States, Census, 1910 (collection 1727033), surname Cooper, residence Green Township, Sussex, New Jersey - 128 index rows, of which the first twenty resolve the township's Cooper households:

| name | b. | household | |---|---|---| | Elmer E Cooper | 1863 | wife Alena (1865), daughter Virginia (1887) | | Caleb S Cooper | 1834 | wife Amanda S (1839) | | Amos Cooper | 1867 | wife Rose (1869); Arthur (1891), Clark (1889), Fred B (1895) | | William J Cooper | 1871 | wife Delia; Russell (1897), Earnest (1900), Floyd (1894) | | Grant Cooper | 1878 | wife Eva (1885), daughter Ester (1907) | | Clarence Cooper | 1884 | no household shown | | Harry Cooper | 1907 | - | | Alfred Cooper | 1901 | - |

⇒ E. E. COOPER, the township treasurer, is ELMER E. COOPER, born about 1863 in New Jersey, living at Green Township in 1910 with his wife Alena and daughter Virginia. A man of 49 holding the township's purse in 1912 fits exactly.

⇒ And Clarence is confirmed as Clarence W. Cooper: the index gives b. 1884, and his file already records that drift in terms - "Other indexes drift: 1910 gives b. 1884" against the stone's 10 October 1882. Right name, right township, right index year.

WHAT THIS IS NOT: a reading. Index rows only; no image was opened, no household was read on a census_stitch.py stitch, and no dwelling or relationship column has been seen. Every figure above is FamilySearch's transcription. Asher Cooper does not appear in the first twenty of the 128 rows, and the remaining six pages were not paged through - so his absence from this list is not established and must not be recorded as one.

Transcription and notes

Found 2 November 2026, the second of the two New Jersey Herald hits for "Asher Cooper" in New Jersey. The first is [J.608], the same township's accounts for 1920.

This page carries three Coopers, and they are three different kinds of fact.

E. E. Cooper is Green Township's Treasurer - his debit and credit accounts are headed in his name, and the expenditure column pays him "Treasurer's Salary ... 10 00" and "Custodian of school funds ... 25 00". A Cooper keeping a township's books is an office-holder, and office-holders are traceable.

Clarence Cooper owes $6.08 - six times the common figure and among the property-sized sums, so he probably held assessable land there.

Asher Cooper owes $1.00 - the same dollar he owes in 1920 on the other page, and in both years the commonest figure in the list. That is a poll tax, so neither notice makes him a property owner. What the pair does establish is a man of that name resident in Green Township across at least eight years, 1912 to 1920 - which sits four years before [name.503]'s Asher died at Dover, in a township adjoining the Stillwater of his birth.

What this is worth, and what it is not

It is a map of one township in one year. None of the three Coopers is in the catalog as a Green Township resident, and [name.503]'s open question is precisely which Cooper family its Asher belongs to and how that family moved across the Sussex/Warren line.

It is not an identification of anybody, and no p.N is created here. The route from this page to something firmer is the census: E. E. Cooper, an office-holder in 1912, will be named in full in the 1910 and 1920 schedules of Green Township, and the Cooper households there can then be read as a group. That is t1.
