The Coopers of Long Hill

Document K.50 · Land Records / Court Records / NJSA Searchable Databases · transcription: verbatim

NJ Supreme Court Case File — Robert Hewlett & James Steele v. Daniel Parker, Monmouth 1738–1739 — Case 17397 — Habeas Corpus in Debt on Bond (1735 £500 EJ money for title to land at Cedar Creek, lower end of Great Cedar Swamp) — manuscript pull (NJSA Order 202605-87245 / pr.77). NULL for our Coopers: the Cedar Creek land-title chain is Hewlett/Steele ↔ Daniel Parker ↔ John Eastwood ↔ John Burnet — NO Cooper. The single 'Daniel Cooper' reference is a clerk's cross-reference 'in Daniel Cooper v. Sam. Norris; additional case listed on writ' = a pointer to the SEPARATE Cooper v. Norris cause (Case 8001, the 1737/1738 Hannover Twp trespass). = does NOT place a Daniel Cooper in the Monmouth Cedar-Creek land transaction; the pr.2-Hypothesis-B hope returns NULL.

Transcription and notes

Manuscript pull received 2026-06-16 via NJSA Order 202605-87245 (pr.77). Index source: K.30 record #44. File: (image held in the family archive) (14 pp). Ordered on the pr.2 Hypothesis B hope that a 1735 Cedar Creek / Great Cedar Swamp £500 land-title bond might place a Daniel Cooper in a Monmouth-County context inside the pr.63 1720–1744 gap window.

Result — NULL for the Cooper hypothesis

No Daniel Cooper appears in the Cedar Creek land-title chain. The 1735 £500 East-New-Jersey bond and the disputed title concern Daniel Parker (defendant), with the land "at Cedar Creek in the lower end of Great Cedar Swamp … taken up by John Estwood [Eastwood] from John Bornet [Burnet]." The plaintiffs are Robert Hewlett (Hulit/Hulet) and James Steele (Stelle/Still); bail for Daniel Parker = John Parker + Richard Parker (yeomen of Monmouth Co.).

The only occurrence of "Cooper" in the entire file is a clerk's cross-reference on a bail-piece / writ (PDF ~p.10) reading "Daniel Cooper / & / Sam: Norris Cop[y] of Declaration 4 May Term 1738" — i.e. a docketing note pointing to the separate Daniel Cooper v. Samuel Norris cause (= K.30 record #5, Case 8001, the 1737/1738 Hannover Twp trespass cluster), which happened to be filed in the same term. It does not make Daniel Cooper a party to, or a landholder in, the Cedar Creek matter.

pr.2 Hypothesis B gains nothing from this case, and the K.30 " possibly primary-source-locks Daniel Sr's Monmouth Co. presence at Cedar Creek 1735" speculation is retired — the Monmouth/Cedar-Creek 1735 land bond has no Cooper in it. (The only real Cooper datum it confirms is indirect: that Cooper v. Norris was an active 4 May 1738 Term cause — already known from Case 8001.)
