Book E is "recreated from the fire-damaged original… only partially complete" (per its title-target card, img 244) — the text is faint with many gaps; bullets below are transcribed as far as legible, with [illegible] / [?] where the scan will not resolve. [partial]: some fields are unreadable and one grantee's given name is uncertain.
Data from the document [verbatim, with gaps]
- Grantor: "Walker Sanders of the County [of Scott]" (surname also written "Saunders" in the acknowledgment).
- Grantees / trustees: "Daniel Cooper[,] [Joel/Isaac][?] Crenshaw and Squire Carrell" — taking title "and their Successors forever"; described as "agents duly appointed by and [illegible — a society/congregation] to receive this deed and to erect a [illegible — meeting house][?]."
- Crenshaw's given name is uncertain: reads "Joel" on p.248 (img 376) but "Isaac" on p.249 (img 377). Recorded as
[Joel/Isaac?] Crenshawpending a cleaner scan. Surname "Crenshaw" is clear both times. - Consideration: the "good Will which he bears to [illegible]" (a donation/charitable conveyance rather than a sale — no money figure legible).
- Property: "tract or parcel of Land situate on the Waters of Cane run," a "Lot", being where "[Walker] Sanders now resides," containing "one [hundred][?]" [acres — figure faint]; metes partly legible — "Beginning at a Stone on the West side… 6 4/10 poles… thence S 70 E 6 4/10 poles to a Stone… with said road to the Beginning."
- Habendum: "To have and to hold the Lot hereby conveyed with its appurtenances unto the said Daniel Cooper[,] [Joel/Isaac] Crenshaw and Squire [Carrell]… Successors forever, and the said Walker Sanders for [himself, his] executors or administrators doth warrant and defend… unto the said Daniel Cooper[,] Crenshaw & Squire Carrell and their Successors against the claim… of all and every person."
- Witnesses (to Sanders): "C. S. Morton [?]" and "John B. Smith [?]"; signed "W. Sanders (Seal)."
- Acknowledgment: "Scott County Sct August 5th 1822. This Indenture from Walker Sanders to D. Cooper[,] [J./I.] Crenshaw and Squire Carrell was this day before me in my office acknowledged by the said Walker Sanders to be his act and deed. By virtue whereof the same is recorded. At. Elijah Hawkins Dc." (D.C. = Deputy Clerk.)
Cross-references / notes
- The "agents… to receive this deed and to erect a…" + "their Successors forever" language = a trustee/church-donation deed (a landowner giving a lot to named trustees to build a meeting house). The interpretation that the "Daniel Cooper" here = Daniel Cooper III [p.737], and the significance of the Cane Run locus, are carried in [p.737] (a lead, not a lock — "Daniel Cooper" is a common name). Same "waters of Cane Run" where daughter Elizabeth (Cooper) Gaines's [p.850] estate tract lay ([K.59]/[A.110]) — the Cane-Run/Scott-Co. locus of the Daniel-Cooper land.
- Part of the Scott Co. Cooper deed sweep — see the master index K.60.
- Follow-up: pull a cleaner image of Deed Bk E pp.248–249 (settle "Joel" vs "Isaac" Crenshaw, the acreage, and the society/structure named) — the fire-damaged reconstruction is why so much is
[illegible]. Identifying the congregation could tie Daniel Cooper III to a specific Scott-Co. church community.
