What this document records
It is the primary source for j36
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL BEHIND [J.36]'s PUBLISHED ABSTRACT, AND IT FILLS THAT ABSTRACT'S GAP. [J.36] was captured from an Ancestry screenshot that cut off mid-sentence after "land bought of Jabesh Bell", losing the remaining beneficiaries, the executors, the witnesses and the probate date. ⇒ all of those are here: probate 1 Feb 1798, executors Nathan and Abraham, witnesses John Coper, Abraham Bell and Christopher Tichr[?], inventory £229.
Out of scope
THIS IS THE ROXBURY LINE, WHICH [pr.26] ESTABLISHED IS NOT OURS — a Long-Island English-colonial family descending from James Cooper Sr of Southampton, N.Y., distinct from Daniel Sr's Long Hill family. Kept for completeness and, more usefully, for disambiguation: this cluster is a recurring source of false matches on the name Nathan.
The john coper witness
THE ONE DATUM HERE THAT TOUCHES THE MAIN RESEARCH. The first witness deposing on 1 February 1798 is "John Coper". John Cooper John Cooper of Denville died 7 September 1798 — seven months later — and he is the man whose probate the catalog has hunted without success as the test of William Cooper William of Rockaway's parentage. PLAUSIBLE, NOT CONFIRMED. John Cooper is among the commonest names in Morris County in 1798, and this document says nothing about which one signed. What makes it worth recording is that it is a signature: if John of Denville's hand ever surfaces elsewhere, this affidavit is directly comparable. Argued on John Cooper.
Missing frame
IMAGE (archive file) IS NOT ON DISK — the sequence jumps 675 to 677. Most likely a duplicate frame or a microfilm leader skipped by the processor rather than lost content, since 675 ends the affidavits and 677 opens the inventory cleanly. Not verified.
Transcription and notes
Provenance, the relationship to [J.36], the out-of-scope finding, the "John Coper" witness
question and the missing frame are all in the source: and coverage: headers and are not
repeated here. The family is argued on [p.461]; the witness lead is on [p.102].

(Heavy cursive, dense text; multiple boundary descriptions; partial reading.)
The will makes extensive real-estate bequests to multiple sons and uses property-purchase history as boundary descriptions. References (verbatim or near-verbatim, all [partial]):
- "lands at Black River" (= Chester / Mendham / Long Valley NJ region)
- "lands in Sussex County" (Sussex Co., NJ; north of Morris Co.)
- "mill at Black River"
- Lands bought of:
- Joseph Bowls (= Joseph Bowles or Joseph Bowlsby, Hanover-area surname)
- Pain Brown (Roxbury-area neighbor; per J.35 Pain Brown was witness to Nathan I's 1788 will)
- Pain Greenwald
- Stephen Brand (or Stephen Brant — surname on multiple Hanover/Roxbury Cooper-adjacent rolls per I.29e p148 1793 Hanover Twp Stephen Brant freeholder)
- Abraham Hill
- Joseph Bell (Bell family — Roxbury cluster)
- Amos Apter[?]
- James Howell Senr
- James Mickler[?]
- Per J.36 abstract additional grantors: Henry Cooper (testator's brother) + Daniel Seward + Thomas Kinsey + James Seward + Jabesh Bell
(The lands-bought-of patterns make this will a good source for Roxbury/Chester area land-tenure relationships in the 1780s-1797 period — useful for J.31/J.32 deed-index cross-referencing if needed.)

(Per the 1798 probate affidavit, the three witnesses are confirmed as John Coper + Abraham Bell + Christopher Tichr. The will-body signature readings have alternate candidates per cursive ambiguity but should resolve to those three.)
