What this document records
Correction 2026 09 13
CORRECTED 2026-09-13 — the "Hester the wife of Daniel Cooper" hit is on IMAGE 381, not on images 483–484, and the will is identified: Nicholas Dolberg of Greenwich, Gloucester Co., 3 April 1749 → [A.183]. The on-disk capture (archive file) shows the highlighted "Cooper" in the line "…my Red[?] Cow unto Hester the wife of Daniel Cooper Item I Give and Bequeath unto the Church Wardens of the Church at Raccoon Creek…", and the margin of the same page reads "Nicholas Dolberg / His Will". What this entry previously read at image 381 as "Nicholas DeLonge (or similar)" was that margin name. The printed abstract (NJ Archives Vol. XXX p. 146, Lib. 6 p. 87) carries the same text. ⇒ the earlier framing below — a "1746-era will" at images 483–484 naming Hester — attached the search excerpt to the wrong images. The 483–484 marginalia (Charity / Hester / Sarah Cooper, "1746") are recorded as they were read.
Image 483 identified
2026-09-13 — image 483's will is also identified. The on-disk capture (archive file) (read at capture resolution) shows the margin "Joseph Cooper / his Will" and the opening "It is to be Remembred that I Joseph Cooper of Newton in the County of Gloucester and Province of New Jersey …", giving "unto Hannah Cooper my dear wife the Messuage & Plantation whereon we now dwell containing about four hundred and thirty Acres of Land & Meadow". The page above it closes the will of Marmaduke Horsman[?]. ⇒ NJ Archives Vol. XXX, PDF page 108 (book page not checked): "1747, Nov. 23. Cooper, Joseph, of Newtown, Gloucester Co.; will of. Wife, Hannah, to have the home plantation, 430 acres (at her death brother, Isaac Cooper, to possess the same) … Nephews—Joseph, Benjamin, James, Samuel and William, sons of brother Benjamin Cooper … Affirmed 22 Nov. 1749. Lib. 6, p. 274." Register page numbers read at 5–6x: image 483 right-hand page 275 (pencil folio 143), image 484 left 276. The earlier marginalia readings "Charity Cooper / 1746", "Hester Cooper / 1746" and "Sarah Cooper" are NOT on the page. All five 483–484 captures were checked 2026-09-13: the only marginalia are "Joseph Cooper / his Will" (483), "Inventory Exhib[ite]d £1351-16-7½" (484, matching the abstract's £1351.16.7½), and a memorandum of Israel Pemberton qualifying as executor (484). The May readings probably came from the viewer's NAMES side panel rather than the image; they are withdrawn as page content, and the subject rows for Charity and Sarah are marked refuted. Both identified wills on this reel (381, 483) are Gloucester Co. → [fam.3].
What the excerpt says
THE SINGLE NAMED MATCH EXPLICITLY READS "Hester the wife of Daniel Cooper" — i.e. a testator left her something. The images 483-484 marginalia additionally cluster the names Charity Cooper, Hester Cooper and Sarah Cooper, with Daniel Cooper highlighted in the body text.
The testator is unknown
NOBODY HAS IDENTIFIED WHOSE WILL THIS IS. It could be a Cooper testator naming relatives, or a non-Cooper naming several Coopers as beneficiaries. ⇒ until the body is read, the entry attests a name-pair in a document, nothing about a family.
Which daniel cooper
NOT IDENTIFIED AS Daniel Cooper Sr DANIEL SR, AND MUST NOT BE ASSUMED. Several Daniel Coopers were alive in colonial NJ. A "Hester" is NEW to the catalog as a possible wife of any of them; what that would mean is on Daniel Cooper Sr, and it rests on an unread will.
The 1669 oddity
The search-result Years panel shows "1669", unexplained — possibly an OCR misread of a probate date, a reference to an earlier document, or a search-engine artifact. Recorded, not resolved.

Image 381 of 583 (left + right page spread)
The two-page spread shows handwritten will register pages. Right-page text reads (legible header only):
"In the Name of God Amen the third day of [Month?] [Year?]" — followed by handwritten body text. First identifiable name in body: "Nicholas DeLonge" (or similar surname) "of the Riding[?]" — = the testator's identification block.
Body text continues but is at handwriting resolution beyond clear OCR; cursive transcription pending closer review. Yellow-highlighted Daniel Cooper match NOT visible on this image.
Image 382 of 583 (left + right page spread)
Right-page text reads (legible header only):
"In the Name of God Amen the second day of January in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and Forty Five" = 2 January 1745 (old-style or new-style not clarified) — followed by handwritten body text. Margin notation "Emanuel C[oryell]" or similar visible left of right-page = testator identification.
= the Emanuel Coryell 1745 will at register-transcription level. Already abstracted at A.18. The body text continues across image 383.
Image 383 of 583 (left page top + bottom)
Continuation of the will from image 382. End of will visible at image 383 left bottom = signature block + witness signatures. Signature appears to read "E[manuel] C[oryell]" or similar but cursive resolution makes confirmation difficult.
Image 483 of 583 (left + right top + right bottom)
A SEPARATE will from images 381-383. Left-page margin shows clerical index notations:
- "Cooper" (top of margin block, surname header)
- "[Charity?] Cooper / 1746"
- "Hester Cooper / 1746"
Body text on the right page = will text, with multiple yellow highlights for "Daniel Cooper" appearances scattered through the body.
The 1746 dates suggest this will was written or probated in 1746. The Cooper marginalia indicate this will names Cooper family members — possibly Charity Cooper, Hester Cooper, and Daniel Cooper (highlighted in body) as beneficiaries OR family relations of the testator.
Image 484 of 583 (left top + left bottom)
Continuation of the will from image 483. Left-page margin shows additional clerical notation:
- "Sarah Cooper" (margin notation)
- Additional yellow highlights for "Daniel Cooper" in body text (4+ visible across this image)
End-of-will visible at image 484 left bottom = signature block + witness signatures.
