What this document records

Heirs

NAMES NO HEIRS AND MAKES NO DISTRIBUTION. The ledger is debts and expenses only, balanced at £197. 16. 10 with no residue. ⇒ an account of this shape cannot yield a child list, structurally. What that closes off is argued on Benjamin Cooper, not here.

Opening charge vs the inventories

CORRECTED 2026-09-13 — the opening charge does NOT read £171. 5. 3. At 5x the shillings figure is a single stroke with a top bar, the same form as the 7s in "171": £171. 7[?]. 3. It was previously recorded as 5 without a zoom pass. The column does not foot on a 7: 171.7.3 + 14.14.5 + 11.14.2 = £197. 15. 10, one shilling short of the page's own total £197. 16. 10; an 8 would foot exactly. Both the glyph and the arithmetic are recorded; the reading is left as 7[?]. The debit side opens "1795 Feb 5 — To Amo[un]t of Inventory filed this day — 171-7[?]-3". The credit column, re-read in full, sums exactly to £197. 16. 10. [A.2]'s foot is read as 133. 4. 6; [A.6]'s published abstract prints £132.4.6; [A.3]'s two supplementary inventories total £39. 3. 9. Recorded as four figures from four documents. The arithmetic that relates them is on Benjamin Cooper, not asserted here, and no reading is corrected on the strength of another document.

Marginal annotation

CORRECTED 2026-09-13. The only side-note on the ledger is written up the left margin and reads at 2x: "Copy enclosed to John H. Cooper & forwarded [by?] D. Frazer Esqr". The former reading "£185 by 6.6 one Pound Copper of L78 [?] is equals £40" is not on the page (checked in both on-disk scans of the file) and is withdrawn; "Copper" was presumably "Copy … Cooper".
