What this source establishes
Stephen Cooper of NEWARK ESSEX CO. NJ — primary-source-locked location
The B.57 Cooper Bible at NJHS Side A documents Stephen R. Cooper b. ? Dec 1771 + Mary Pierson (m. 1798) + Lucinda Jones (m. 1801) + their children. Until 2026-05-26 the catalog had no geographic locator for this family — Bible's NJHS provenance suggested NJ but the specific county was unknown.
A.69 + D.310 + G.176 primary-source-LOCK Stephen Cooper as resident of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey:
- Estate file 5798 = of Essex County
- Administration sworn at Newark
- Administration bond names "John C. Cooper of the Township of Orange" + "William W. Cooper" + "John C. Pitts of the City of Newark" (= all Essex Co. localities)
- Bond witnessed at Newark
- Stephen Cooper buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery Newark per G.176
Newark Essex Co. NJ is adjacent to Long Hill Morris Co. NJ
Newark = seat of Essex Co. NJ. Long Hill = Morris Co. NJ, immediately west of Essex. The two counties share a long border. Daniel Cooper Sr (1695-1795) of Long Hill lived ~15 miles from Newark.
This raises the possibility that Stephen Cooper b. 1772 d. 1839 is related to Daniel Sr's line: - (a) Grandson hypothesis: Stephen could be Daniel Sr's grandson via an unidentified intermediate son or grandson — Daniel Sr d. 1795 at age 100, Stephen b. 1772 would have been age 23 at Daniel's death - (b) Nephew hypothesis: Stephen could be the son of a SIBLING of Daniel Sr — possibly Anne Cooper Van Court's [p.3] son (= her son Daniel VanCourt b. 1724 m. ??? could not have a son named Stephen — needs verification) - (c) Unrelated Newark Cooper hypothesis: Stephen could be from a separate Cooper line in Essex Co. NJ — connected to other Newark Coopers like Samuel Cooper of Newark (= [pr.61] NJSA Probate Order Samuel Cooper Esq. 1737 administration target) OR other unidentified Newark Coopers
Per memory feedback_grep_catalog_before_recommending.md, before recommending substantial work: grep catalog for "Stephen Cooper" + "John C Cooper" + "William W Cooper" + "Newark" + "Orange Twp" + "John C Pitts" + "William Lee" to find any existing entries.
Two children confirmed as administrators
- John C. Cooper of the Township of Orange = p.371 John Cumming Cooper 1802-1878. Bible-tier confirms his middle name "Cumming"; estate file gives middle initial "C." Both consistent.
- William W. Cooper [of Newark] = p.376 William White Cooper 1818-1859. Bible-tier confirms his middle name "White"; estate file gives middle initial "W." Both consistent. However, Bible-tier birth date 1818 conflicts with Ancestry tree's 1820 + Bible-tier death date 1859 conflicts with Find A Grave Sep 1854. Note: William W. would have been only age 19-21 in 1839 (per either reading), young to be an administrator — but legally possible at age 21+. Or possibly the Bible's "1818" reading is wrong and actual was 1818 → would be age 21; or 1820 → age 19 = just barely adult.
Two additional bondsmen — William Lee + John C. Pitts of Newark
These are NEW catalog persons. Bondsmen on a probate bond were typically: (a) relatives of the decedent, (b) family friends or business associates of the administrators, (c) prominent men of standing.
- William Lee = no Newark-relative title given; possibly = relative of Stephen (= his brother-in-law, son-in-law, or other extended kin). One specific hypothesis: William Lee may have been the husband of Stephen's daughter Mary J. Cooper (b. 1804) — that would explain his role as bondsman. Catalog action: pull Mary J. Cooper [p.372] marriage records for husband-Lee verification.
- John C. Pitts of the City of Newark = possibly = Stephen's son-in-law OR business associate. Catalog action: 1840 Newark NJ census for John C. Pitts.
J.A. Smith = Essex Co. Surrogate 1839
J. Allen Smith or J. A. Smith served as Essex County Surrogate in this period. Catalog reference for verification of other Essex Co. NJ probate dates.
