What this document records
The row verbatim
Date of marriage "December 26th" · ages "25" (M) and "25" (F) · "Single" · by whom married "William C McGee" · residence "Stilwater Township" · official station "Minister of the Gospel" · where married "Stilwater Township" · parties "Calvin C Cooper" and "Rachel Jones" · residences "Green Township" (both) · names of parents "Joseph Cooper" and "Samuel Jones" · occupation "Blacksmith" and "Housekeeping" · time of making record "August 11th 1862".
⚠️ the year comes from the heading
The date cell gives month and day only. The return period in the heading is 1 May 1861 – 1 May 1862, so "December 26th" falls in 1861.
⚠️ two overwritten cells
(1) The groom's age: the second digit is a heavy 5 written over another figure; the underlying figure does not resolve at 5x. (2) The bride's parents cell: "Samuel" is written over an earlier word that does not resolve; "Jones" is clean.
Names of parents gives fathers only
Both parents cells carry a single name — the father's. No mother is written for either party.
The clerk
The certificate reads "This is to Certify that this is the Original Returns of Marriages as Delivered to me by the Town Assessor with his Affidavit Accompanying it, and that I have made a Record of the same", signed "Samuel Jones, Town Clerk". The clerk's name is the same as the bride's father's as written; the document does not say whether they are one man.
Other rows on the return
Eight other marriages on this return. They were looked over on the whole-page view for the surname Cooper only (none seen) and were NOT transcribed.
Top half of the image
The upper half of the image is another return (printed page number 473; manuscript township heading not re-read at zoom). Looked over on the whole-page view for the surname Cooper only; none seen.
