Searched for: HIS MARRIAGE TO ELSIE STACKHOUSE, ON FAMILYSEARCH'S RECORD INDEXES - the leg this file had never carried. The maintainer noticed it: the marriage had been worked hard on Ancestry from BOTH sides (2026-09-21, 2026-10-04, 2026-10-15) while the only familysearch-records rows here were a name Full-Text sweep of Warren/Sussex, the War of 1812 index and the Hackettstown Presbyterian reels - none of them a marriage search. Run from both sides: (a) GROOM - surname Cooper, given Joseph, spouse surname Stackhouse, marriage 1815-1840 (88,941 RANKED, not filtered -
q.spouseSurname only ranks on an unscoped record search, exactly as William Cooper records for q.residencePlace; page 1 of 100 read); (b) BRIDE - surname Stackhouse, given Els*, spouse surname Cooper, marriage 1815-1840.Result: NULL - FamilySearch holds NO marriage record for them, and that is now recorded rather than assumed. From BOTH sides the only hit naming the two together is the SAME record the catalog already holds: [F.317], the index of George Cooper's 1913 Minnesota death certificate no. 9827, which names "Father Joseph Cooper" and "Elsie Stackhaus". Everything else on page 1 is England and Wales Marriage Registration Index 1837-2005 (~60 rows), two Hamilton Co., Ohio marriages of January 1832 with spouse UNKNOWN, and Yorkshire/Cheshire/Massachusetts parish rows. Note for anyone re-running this: the groom-side ark for that Minnesota record is 1:1:CY2R-FZN2 (the event indexed from JOSEPH's side), while [F.317] cites 1:1:CY2R-FZ6Z (George's own). Same certificate, two arks - which is why a parent-side search is worth running even when the event is already held. So the couple is still evidenced only by their CHILDREN's death certificates - [F.139] (Calvin Chandler, Pennsylvania) and [F.317] (George, Minnesota) - never by a marriage record. The 1822-1832 NJ marriage remains unlocated in every index searched on either provider. [Marker closed 2026-10-15 - prior wording kept. The Stackhouse-alone sweep of coll. 1803976 makes this a settled null for this collection, not a thing still to do.]

Searched for: HIS MARRIAGE TO ELSIE STACKHOUSE, searched from the BRIDE's side for the first time (every prior attempt searched the groom). Elsie Stackhouse, marriage 1822-1832, all collections, priority USA (2,521 ranked; page 1 read and filtered for New Jersey).
Result: NULL for a Joseph Cooper marriage - and it HARDENS [C.113]. The only New Jersey Stackhouse marriage anywhere in the window is the SAME 11 Apr 1822 Sussex Co. event, indexed twice under two different renderings of her given name: "Eliza Stackhouse" (NJ Compiled Marriage Records 1684-1886) and "Elsa Stackhouse" (NJ Marriage Records 1670-1965, coll. 61376, NJ State Archives, film 004541257). The second index was opened: it gives "Spouse: JOSEPH BELL". So a SECOND, independent index agrees with [C.113]'s 3x image read of the register plate - the April 1822 Sussex marriage is Joseph BELL to Elisa Stackhouse, NOT Joseph Cooper. ⇒ the trees' "m. 4 Apr 1822" claim for this couple is that Bell marriage misattributed, now corroborated from the index side as well as the image side. His own marriage record remains UNLOCATED.

The only April-1822 Stackhouse marriage on the opening is "April 11 · Joseph BELL to Elisa Stackhouse", in the return of James Dewitt, Esq., Justice - the same justice who married Samuel Cooper Samuel Cooper to Sarah Balden eight lines earlier on p. 233 ([C.84]). No Joseph Cooper marriage appears anywhere on the opening, and the compiled index holds no Joseph Cooper marriage anywhere in NJ 1820-1824. NOT yet a true null: the register is arranged by officiant, not by date, so a fuller read of the film is still owed. [Marker closed 2026-10-15 - prior wording kept above. Searched for: THE "FULLER READ OF THE FILM" THAT THE 2026-09-21 ROW ABOVE LEFT OWING - done by index instead of by browsing. The objection there was that the Sussex register is arranged by OFFICIANT, not by date, so reading one opening proves nothing about the rest of the reel. ⇒ Collection 1803976 ("New Jersey, County Marriages, 1682-1956") searched on SURNAME STACKHOUSE ALONE - marriage 1815-1835, place New Jersey, and deliberately NO SPOUSE SURNAME, so that a mis-indexed or mis-read "Cooper" could not hide the row. (Every earlier pass on either provider had bound the spouse to Cooper, which is exactly the constraint that would suppress the hit it was looking for.)
Result: 63 rows - THE COMPLETE SET, returned on a single page, every one read. ⇒ THERE IS NO STACKHOUSE x COOPER MARRIAGE INDEXED ANYWHERE IN NEW JERSEY, 1815-1835. The Sussex and Warren rows are: Ann Stackhouse x Samuel Crooker 29 Dec 1819 Sussex; Charity Stackhouse x Gabriel Croen 1 Apr 1820 Sussex; Hannah Stackhouse x Andrew Young(s) 24 Feb 1821 Sussex; Margaret/Margret Stackhouse/Stackehouse x Isaac France 29 Mar 1821 Sussex; ELISA / ELSA STACKHOUSE x JOSEPH BELL 11 Apr 1822 Sussex; Caleb/Calub Stackhous x Rebekah Cox 28 Jan 1826 Warren; Rachel/Rachael Stackhouse x Uriah Burdge 26 Jan 1826 Warren; James Stackhouse x Elizabeth Poyers 20 Oct 1827 Warren; Jane Stackhouse x Francis Stockman 23 Feb 1828 Warren; Jonathan Stackhouse x Ann Drake 1832 Warren; Susannah Stackhouse x Conrad Lomberson/Lombason/Lambason 24 Jan 1835 Warren. The remainder are Burlington, Hunterdon, Essex, Morris, Bergen and Cumberland. AND THE REPEATS ARE THE POINT: most of these marriages appear TWICE or THREE times, because the collection indexes the CLERK'S BOUND REGISTER (DGS 004541238) and the OFFICIANT'S LOOSE RETURN (DGS 004541257) as separate rows. ⇒ Both reels are inside this one search. A Joseph x Elsie marriage recorded on either of them, under any spelling of Stackhouse that an indexer could read, WOULD BE IN THESE 63 ROWS. It is not. ⇒ Their marriage was not returned to the Sussex County clerk, or was returned and lost, or did not happen in a county this collection covers. What it does NOT close: a marriage returned to ANOTHER county's clerk, or recorded only in a church register, or never returned at all - which was common, and which no index can disprove.

Searched for: THE OFFICIANT'S OWN PAPER behind the one April-1822 Stackhouse marriage, pulled because [film.004541257] carries a standing rule for this collection: "whenever a Sussex register page of 1809-1827 is cited, pull the officiant's own paper from this reel as well" - the loose return having been found on 2026-09-23 to give both parties' TOWNSHIPS where the clerk's copy gives names and a date only. Reached in two clicks from the "Elsa Stackhouse" index row (ark 1:1:VWRS-QLN) via View Original Document, not by browsing the reel.
Result: FOUND -> [C.150]. DGS 004541257 image 1246: James Dewitt's own signed return of seven marriages, dated 2 Sept 1822. The line reads, at 3x on the full-resolution plate, "April 11th 1822 - I Married JOSEPH BELL OF HARDWICK to ELSA STACKHOUSE OF THE SAME PLACE". TWO THINGS THE REGISTER COPY COULD NOT GIVE. (1) "Bell" is now attested in a SECOND, quite different hand - the justice's own, not the clerk's - so the surname on that line does not rest on one transcription. (2) The bride's TOWNSHIP: she was OF HARDWICK. This man and his wife are documented in INDEPENDENCE Twp ([D.4] 1850, [D.469] 1860). That leans against the April-1822 bride being his Elsie, and it is the first evidence that bears on the question at all - but it does NOT settle it. Hardwick and Independence adjoin in the same county, a bride of 1822 could be living in Independence by 1825 (his eldest recorded child, Lewis Sanford Cooper Lewis Sanford, b. 26 Feb 1825), and the rival reading has her moving anyway, since it makes her a widow remarried. ⇒ Weakened, not excluded; both readings stay open at [name.602]. THAT LEVER WAS THEN PULLED, same day - see the next row.

Result: 6 results, all read: Independence Twp WARREN; Ahasymus, BERGEN; Jersey City, BERGEN; Salem, SALEM; Galloway Twp, GLOUCESTER; and a "Joseph Bllsck" in New Hanover Twp, BURLINGTON. ⇒ EXACTLY ONE JOSEPH BELL IS INDEXED IN WARREN COUNTY IN 1830, and Hardwick - which was itself in Warren by then - holds none. AND HE IS ON A PAGE THE CATALOG ALREADY HOLDS. The Warren hit is page 12 of Independence Twp, image 779 stamped 406 - the same sheet as [D.40]'s John and Robert Cooper, with Joseph Bell TWO HOUSEHOLDS AFTER ROBERT. [D.598] had recorded his name in the walking order since 2026-09-10 but never his brackets; they were read now, on the deskewed plate with census_stitch.py: MALES under 5 = 2, 5-10 = 1, 15-20 = 3, 30-40 = 1; FEMALES under 5 = 1, 5-10 = 1, 30-40 = 1. Ten people - a head 30-40, A WOMAN 30-40, and four children under ten. IF that is the 1822 groom and IF the 30-40 woman is his 1822 bride, then Elsa Stackhouse was Mrs Bell throughout the 1820s - exactly the years this man's wife was bearing Cooper children (Lewis Sanford Cooper 1825, George Monroe Cooper 1830) - and the two women cannot be the same person. NEITHER "IF" IS PROVEN: Hardwick is not Independence, and an 1830 schedule names no women, so a second wife fits the sheet equally well. ⇒ The reading in which the 1822 bride is this man's Elsie now has NO positive evidence for it, only the absence of a disproof. Still asserted: neither. The argument lives at [name.601] and [name.602]. Noticed in passing and recorded at [D.598]: the head enumerated IMMEDIATELY AFTER Bell, Uriah Burdge [name.566], also married a Stackhouse - Rachel, 26 Jan 1826, Warren Co., one of the 63 rows above. Two Stackhouse marriages out of a whole 20-year statewide set, in consecutive households three doors from the Coopers. No relationship between the brides is asserted. Searched for: JOSEPH BELL in 1840 and 1850, run straight after the 1830 row above, because 1850 is the first federal census that NAMES a wife. (a) "United States, Census, 1840" (coll. 1786457), Joseph Bell, residence Warren, New Jersey; (b) "United States, Census, 1850" (coll. 1401638), same name and county.
Result: (a) 3 results, ONE in Warren: Joseph Bell, 1840, "Independence, Warren, New Jersey", page 353 - AND IT IS A PAGE THE CATALOG ALREADY HOLDS, [D.348], two rows below John Cooper. Brackets read there for the first time (details and the method caveat at [D.348]): MALES 10-15 = 1, 15-20 = 1, 20-30 = 3, 40-50 = 1; FEMALES 10-15 = 1, 15-20 = 1, 50-60 = 1. The head is the 40-50 male; the ONLY adult woman is 50-60. (b) 11 results, and the Warren one is his: Joseph Bell, 54, b. ~1796 New Jersey, Independence Twp, household 268, house 241, line 35, with SARAH BELL, F, 44, New Jersey, and JASON BELL, M, 1 (ark 1:1:M6MT-SFC - INDEX READ, image not pulled, so this is an index reading and not a transcription). THE THREE SCHEDULES DO NOT CHAIN, and no reconciliation is offered: a woman 30-40 in 1830 should be 40-50 in 1840, not 50-60; Sarah, b. ~1806, should be 20-30 in 1830 and 30-40 in 1840, and is in neither. It may be three women, or the loose bracketing [D.348] ALREADY DOCUMENTS ON THIS VERY PAGE, where two of three Cooper brothers read a full bracket younger than their death returns imply. WHAT SURVIVES: Joseph Bell of Independence, b. ~1796, was alive and keeping house with an adult woman in 1830, 1840 AND 1850 - across the whole span in which this man's wife was bearing Cooper children. AND NO WOMAN IN HIS HOUSE IS NAMED BEFORE 1850, when she is Sarah. So the 1822 bride is identified in none of them, and these censuses do not close the question either - they only remove the one scenario (an early-widowed Elsa free to remarry a Cooper by 1824) that reading (b) needed. ⇒ Position unchanged and deliberately so: reading (a) better supported, reading (b) without positive evidence, neither asserted. Still open: Bell deaths, remarriages and probate in Sussex/Warren; his 1860 and 1870 censuses; and - the real gap - whether the Independence Joseph Bell is the HARDWICK groom of 1822 at all, which no record touched today.
