Source: published genealogy by Haines (per archive.org id genealogyofstoke00hain; digitized by Internet Archive / Allen County Public Library), Genealogy of the Stokes Family, Descended From Thomas and Mary Stokes Who Settled in Burlington County, N.J. (Quaker family of Burlington/Gloucester Co.). Full PDF now on disk: (image held in the family archive) (maintainer 2026-07-08; 456 pp., OCR-extractable). Compiler initials "C. H. Data from the document — Joshua Cooper family, "Fourth Generation and Children," book p.54 (PDF p.66) [verbatim]
"Abigail Stokes, dau. of Jacob Stokes and Priscilla Ellis, m. Joshua Cooper, son of Daniel Cooper and Mary [blank]. Children were —" - "William, b. 1,1,1783; m. , Edith Ackley." (continues book p.138a/PDF p.163: "William Cooper, son of Abigail Stokes and Joshua Cooper, m. Edith Ackley, dau. of Thomas Ackley and Mercy [blank]"; children Matilda, Thomas, Mary, William.) - "Joseph E., b. 8,29,[17]86; m. , Mary Schull." (book OCR prints "1776" — an obvious typo for 1786: it's impossible pre-dating the parents' 1782 marriage, it's listed 2nd after William 1783, and the Haddonfield register [F.220] gives 29 8mo 1786.) - "Jacob, b. 8,12,1790; died 1827 at Mobile." - "Daniel, b. 11,21,1795; m. , Louezer Sherad." - "George, b. 10,8,1798; m. , Matilda Ruff, of Maryland." - "Sarah Ann, b. 6,6,18—; died young." - "Abigail, b. 4,25,1803; m. , Stephen Hughes, who kept slaves."
(The book omits the two infants who died — Cadwalader 1789 + Franklin 1793 — who appear in the Haddonfield birth register [F.220]. Otherwise the roster + birthdates match the register exactly.)
The book independently states Joshua Cooper = "son of Daniel Cooper and Mary [blank]" — a second source (after the FamilySearch marriage index, [C.66]) naming Joshua's father Daniel, and newly naming his mother Mary.
Data from the document — the same passage as first seen (Ancestry image of book p.54) [verbatim]
Under the children of Jacob Stokes (son of Thomas Stokes and Rachel Wright, 2d wife):
- "Jacob Stokes, son of Thomas Stokes and Rachel Wright, 2d wife, m. Priscilla Ellis, dau. of Joseph Ellis and ——— ———."
- "Children were—"
- "Jacob, Jr., b. ; m. 4-10, 1775; an acknowledgment received for outgoing marriage."
- "John, b. ; disowned for military service and enlisting, 10-14, 1776."
- "Abigail, b. ; m. , Joshua Cooper."
Other same-page entries (context; non-Cooper): - "Thomas Stokes, son of Thomas Stokes and Rachel Wright (his second wife), m. Abigail Matlack, dau. of John Matlack and Mary Lee (his second wife). They had no children." - "Elizabeth Stokes, dau. of John Stokes and Elizabeth Green, m. Richard Blackham … Children were— Elizabeth, b. . William, b. ." - "Mary Stokes, dau. of John Stokes and Elizabeth Green, m. Edward Mullen … Children were— Elizabeth, b. ; m. , Thomas Haines (see page 51). A granddaughter of Mary and Edward—Kesiah Burr—m. Richard Howell, who was afterward Governor of New Jersey; and their granddaughter m. Jefferson Davis, Pres. of the Southern Confederacy. C. H. E."
Data from the document — Ancestry index "Detail" panel [desc] (index-aggregation, NOT on the transcribed page)
The following child list is Ancestry's indexed/aggregated "Joshua Cooper" record, not printed on the Jacob-Stokes page above (which names only "Abigail … m. Joshua Cooper"). Ancestry's indexer pulled these from elsewhere. ** 2026-07-08 UPDATE — now VINDICATED: the primary-source Haddonfield Quaker birth register (F.220) confirms these are the real children of Joshua × Abigail (the panel merely dropped the three who died in infancy — Cadwalader, Franklin, and it kept Sarah Ann). So the panel was accurate; it was simply sourced from the Quaker register, not this Stokes page. - Name: Joshua Cooper — Gender: Male — Spouse: Abigail Stokes - Children (per panel): William Cooper; Joseph E Cooper; Jacob Cooper; Daniel Cooper; George Cooper; Sarah Ann Cooper; Abigail Cooper** - "Others in Record": Darling Conrow, Sarah Elkinton, Joseph Conrow (+ more)
Notes
- Quaker context: the Stokes family are Burlington Co. Quakers; "disowned for military service and enlisting" (of son John, 1776) is Quaker-meeting disownment language. Joshua Cooper's marriage to Abigail is recorded as occurring in Gloucester, NJ, 21 Feb 1782 (see C.66).
- The panel's "Joseph E Cooper" = [p.1608] (fam.3, m. Mary Scull) — see the fuller I.185. He was briefly mis-merged with our Warren p.112; [I.185] resolved them as two different men.

Follow-ups
- DONE — Joshua Cooper's own entry located (book p.54 / PDF p.66): full roster + "son of Daniel Cooper and Mary."
- RESOLVED (2026-07-08): "Joseph E. m. Mary Schull" here = [p.1608] (fam.3); the "Joseph Ellis m. Elsie Stackhouse" of the trees = our Warren [p.112] — two different men (per [I.185] Hull register giving p.1608's Mary-Scull family of 3). No reconciliation needed.
- Trace the fam.3 siblings if the Cooper branch is worked: William (m. Edith Ackley, Gloucester), Jacob (d.1827 Mobile AL), Daniel (m. Louezer Sherad), George (m. Matilda Ruff, MD), Abigail (m. Stephen Hughes).
- Book p.25 (referenced) = the primary Jacob-Stokes/Priscilla-Ellis family entry; and the Ellis family section (Priscilla's father Joseph Ellis) for Joseph-Ellis-Cooper's namesake ancestry.
