Searched for: THE REMARRIAGE QUESTION ASKED OF THE VITAL INDEXES INSTEAD OF THE CENSUSES — which is what every previous pass had missed. Twenty-four searches stand above and below this one and all of them interrogate CENSUS indexes; a remarried widow's surname change is recorded in a marriage return, and her end in a death return whose parents' column names her maiden family. Four bounded searches, all in Ancestry coll. 62483 (New Jersey, U.S., Birth, Marriage and Death Records, 1711-1878) and coll. 61376 (New Jersey, U.S., Marriage Records, 1670-1965): (a)?name=El%2A_Waldron&count=50— the first standing candidate, whole collection, no year or place bound: 45 rows, one page, ALL READ. (b)?name=El%2A_Sheeler&count=50— the second standing candidate, same shape: 20 rows, ALL READ. (d) the same withmarriage=_warren-new+jersey-usa_3036— Warren County: 16 rows. (c) and (d) are complete-county lists, the form this catalog prefers a null in.Result: THE WALDRON CANDIDATE IS DISPOSED OF, AND NOT BY A NULL — BY A RECORD. (a) No Waldron death for her anywhere in New Jersey 1711-1878. But the engine's own fuzzy matching returned, unprompted, "Elsie Waldorf, Death, Feb 1877, Sussex". Opened, downloaded and filed as [F.371]: Town of Newton, Sussex Co., line 22 — Widow, aged 79 (⇒ b. abt 1798), born Hunterdon Co. N.J., parentsJohn & Elizabeth Anderson, cause "Congestion Lungs". ⇒ [name.711], where the identification is argued. She is almost certainly the 1870 "Eley Waldron" of Newton — same town, same birth year, both lone widows — and the join was TESTED, not assumed: zero Waldorfs in Sussex Co. in 1870 (so the 1877 decedent is indexed there under another spelling) and zero elderly Waldrons in Sussex Co. in 1880, nine rows all read (so the 1870 Eley Waldron is gone and left no Waldron death). Each woman is missing from exactly the year the other is present, in one small town. Her parents were ANDERSONS, not Stackhouses ⇒ not this person. Graded probable, inheriting the grade of the Waldron↔Waldorf identification, because I readWaldronon the 1870 plate at 4x andWaldorfon the 1877 register and they are different words. (b) NULL for Sheeler — no Elsey Sheeler death in New Jersey at all. The nearest isElanor A Sheeler, d. 22 Mar 1876, Warren — a different given name in a different county. ⇒ Elsey Sheeler of Andover is NOT excluded; she is merely unsupported, and now has no death record either. (c)(d) NO REMARRIAGE OF ANEl* COOPERIS INDEXED IN EITHER COUNTY. Sussex's four are Elmer E. (1896), Ella J. (1900), andEliza Cooperx Joseph Hendershot at Sparta (1865, twice indexed). Warren's sixteen are Elmer, Ellen x Bartron (1846), Elizabeth x Robert Teats (1835), Elizabeth x Henry E. Doty (1853, b. abt 1828 — half her age), Elizabeth B/H x Aaron H White (1864), Margaret Elizabeth x Johnson (1850) and Ella x Pittenger (1889). Not one Else / Elsie / Eley / Elcy. ⇒ If she remarried, it was not in the two counties she is documented in, and not under a recognisable form of her given name. - Burial not yet found.

Searched for: THE FOUR SUSSEX REMARRIAGE CANDIDATES, WORKED. The 1870 record for each was opened, and then the SAME TEST THAT DISPOSED OF THE WARREN CANDIDATE was applied to all four: does she appear in the 1860 census under that surname? If she does, she was already married into it while our Elsie was still "Else Cooper" heading her own household in Independence Twp, Warren [D.469] - and she is another woman. 1860 census = coll. 7667, bounded
residence=_sussex-new+jersey-usa_2837&residence_x=1-0-0_1-0, given name wildcard El*, one search per surname. A control was run first: the identical query shape on 1870 (coll. 7163) returns the 3 Sussex Waldrons, so a zero is a real zero.Result: TWO EXCLUDED, TWO STILL STANDING. The candidate list is halved. "Elsey Hill" - EXCLUDED. 1860 Sussex holds "Elsey Hill, Green Twp, b. abt 1799, New Jersey". Same name, same birth year, same county, already a Hill in 1860. Another woman. "Elsie Grey" - EXCLUDED. 1860 Sussex holds "Elery Grey, Montague, b. abt 1800, New Jersey" - already a Grey in 1860 - and the 1870 index gives her a living husband Wm, which never fitted a woman widowed in 1852 anyway. "Eley Waldron" - NOT EXCLUDED, and opened in full: 72, b. abt 1798 New Jersey, Newton, Sussex Co., dwelling 374, P.O. Newton, "Keeping House", AND THE HOUSEHOLD IS ONE PERSON (coll. 7163 rec. 29335260; roll M593_889, p. 151B). There are no Waldrons at all in Sussex Co. in 1860 (zero rows, against 3 in 1870), so she arrived in the decade. "Elsey Sheeler" - NOT EXCLUDED. Zero El Sheelers in Sussex Co. in 1860 likewise. DO NOT READ THE WALDRON "ARRIVAL" AS CORROBORATION. IT IS THE 2026-10-17 TRAP EXACTLY. An age within two years, a New Jersey birth, the spelling Eley that [C.29] itself uses for her, a lone elderly woman keeping house, and a surname absent from the county ten years earlier - five things that all fit, and not one of them is unique to her. "She arrived between 1860 and 1870" is equally true of any Waldron widow who moved to Newton. [D.830] was graded probable on four such details and was refuted the same day. AND A REASON FOR EXTRA CAUTION FROM THE SAME SEARCH: the Hill results also turned up "Elcy Hill, Stillwater, b. abt 1818". ⇒ Elcy / Elsey is an ordinary given name in Sussex County*, not a rare one, so name-shape evidence is worth very little here. NOTHING IS ASSERTED. What would actually decide Eley Waldron: a Cooper x Waldron marriage return 1860-1870; a death record giving her age or parents; the 1880 census, which names relationships; or the 1870 plate itself (Newton, p. 151B, dwelling 374) read for her neighbours.

Searched for: THE REMARRIAGE TEST - the one question none of the day's other searches could pose, because every one of them keys on the surname COOPER. Asked the other way round: her GIVEN name is the constant and the surname is what would have changed, so the 1870 census (coll. 7163) was searched with a WILDCARD GIVEN NAME AND NO SURNAME AT ALL, bounded on residence and birth year -
?name=El*_&birth=1800&residence=_<county>_<id>&residence_x=1-0-0_1-0&count=50. Ancestry accepts an empty surname in that form; the trailing underscore is what makes it a given-name-only search. (a) Warren Co. (3036): 110 rows, ALL THREE PAGES READ. (b) Sussex Co. (2837): 72 rows, BOTH PAGES READ. Every row was checked against the six spellings this catalog holds for her - Eloe, Else, Eley, Elsy, Elsie, Elcy.Result: WARREN IS CLEAN, AND DECISIVELY SO. In 110 rows there is exactly ONE Elsie-type given name - "Elsee Conklin", 73, b. abt 1797 New Jersey, Hardwick Twp, P.O. Columbia, "Keeping House", dwelling 1, with David Conklin 27 (coll. 7163 rec. 29351395). SHE IS NOT OUR ELSIE, and her own suggested-records panel settles it without ambiguity: she is indexed "Elsey Ann Conklin" in the 1850 census, "Else Conkling" in the 1860 census and in the NJ Compiled Census Index, and carries Van Auken / Van Aken records in the Dutch Reformed registers - i.e. she was Elsie (Van Auken) Conklin, a Conklin by marriage for twenty years before our Elsie was still "Else Cooper" heading her own household in Independence Twp [D.469]. Two women, both in the 1860 census, under different surnames in different townships. ⇒ No remarriage candidate exists in Warren County. Everything else in the 110 is Elizabeth, Eliza, Ellen, Elmira, Elias, Eli, Elijah, Elmer, Ella or Elenor. SUSSEX IS NOT CLEAN - AND THIS IS THE USEFUL PART. Four rows carry an Elsie-type given name and NONE has been opened: · "Eley Waldron", Newton, b. abt 1798 - the strongest by name, because Eley is one of the six spellings the catalog holds for her, from [C.29], her son Caleb's 1858 marriage return. No spouse shown in the index. · "Elsey Hill", Andover, b. abt 1801 - no spouse shown. · "Elsey Sheeler", Andover, b. abt 1802 - no spouse shown. · "Elsie Grey", Frankford, b. abt 1799 - weakest: the index shows a husband Wm, so she is a wife rather than a widow or a head, which does not fit a woman widowed by 1852. ⇒ THE REMARRIAGE ALTERNATIVE IS NOW EXCLUDED FOR WARREN AND OPEN FOR SUSSEX, with four named records to open rather than a hypothesis. Carried to the
todo:. WHAT THIS TEST CANNOT DO, said plainly: a wildcard on the GIVEN name assumes the given name survived the remarriage recognisably. It would not find her as "Mrs", as an initial, or under a name the enumerator took from a second husband's household. It also covers only two counties.ancestry all 2026-10-18 · IS SHE ALIVE IN 1870? - asked as a PLACE question rather than a name question, because every previous attempt searched for her by given...
Searched for: IS SHE ALIVE IN 1870? - asked as a PLACE question rather than a name question, because every previous attempt searched for her by given name and her name is written six different ways. The complete-county place recipe on the 1870 federal census (coll. 7163), surname COOPER alone, no given name, no birth year, 50 per page: (a)
?name=_Cooper&count=50&residence=_warren-new+jersey-usa_3036&residence_x=1-0-0_1-0 - 51 rows, BOTH PAGES READ; (b) the same for Sussex (_sussex-new+jersey-usa_2837) - 75 rows, BOTH PAGES READ. THE COUNTS ARE THE PROOF THE FILTER BIT: a filterless Warren search returns tens of thousands. Read before the rows, per the standing rule.Result: NULL, AND IT NARROWS HER DEATH BY A DECADE. In 126 Coopers across both counties there is no woman born anywhere near 1800. The oldest Cooper women in Warren are Mary (abt 1812, Greenwich), Jemima (abt 1815, Belvidere), Eliza (abt 1816, Ireland) and Mary (abt 1819, Blairstown); in Sussex, Nancy (abt 1789, wife of James, Vernon), an unattached Sarah (abt 1789, Wantage), Anna (abt 1811, Sparta) and Jane (abt 1811, Vernon). None can be a woman enumerated at 60 in 1860 [D.469]. ⇒ She was not living in Warren or Sussex County under the surname Cooper in June 1870. Since she headed her own household in Independence Twp in 1860, the live reading is that she died between June 1860 and June 1870. AND THAT CREATES A TENSION WORTH STATING, BECAUSE BOTH HALVES CANNOT BE COMFORTABLE. A death in 1860-1870 falls INSIDE the window the state vital index covers (1848-1878) - and the same day's complete read of all 257 El Cooper rows in coll. 62483 found no such death (see the row below). ⇒ Either she died outside these two counties, or her death was never returned to the state, or she is indexed under a given name that does not begin "El". New Jersey returns of the 1860s are known to be incomplete, so the middle option is not a stretch - but it is not asserted. TWO SONS CONFIRMED IN PLACE AND NOT SHELTERING HER: Caleb Swayze Cooper Caleb is at Green Twp, Sussex (dwelling 127, with Amanda J and five children - see [D.360], re-read the same day), and Calvin Chandler Cooper Calvin C. at Washington Twp, Warren (with Rachel, Eleanor J and Sam'l J - [D.377]). Neither household contains an elderly woman.* An aged widow living with a son is the commonest reason such a person is hard to find, and that explanation is now excluded for these two. Robert Marshall Cooper Robert M. and George Monroe Cooper George Monroe remain to be checked the same way.

(b) Coll. 62483 "New Jersey, Birth, Marriage and Death Records, 1711-1878": name=Elc*_Cooper (the [A.211] spelling, which NO previous search has ever covered - every earlier pass used Els*, which cannot match Elcy) - zero rows; then name=Els*_Cooper unbounded - 3 rows; then name=El*_Cooper unbounded - 257 rows, ALL SIX PAGES READ via &pg=2..&pg=6, heading verified counting up (1-50, 51-100, 101-150, 151-200, 201-250, 251-257). WHY El* IS A COMPLETE READ FOR HER AND NOT MERELY A WIDE ONE: every spelling this catalog has ever seen for her begins "El" - Eloe [D.4], Else [D.469], Eley [C.29], Elsy [C.28], Elsie [F.139], Elcy [A.211]. The wildcard cannot miss her on the given name. AND IT WAS NOT SURNAME-BRITTLE EITHER: the 257 rows carry Coopper, Couper, Coper, Coopr, Cowper, Caper, Capper, Cawper, Coopers and Kuper alongside Cooper, so the index's own surname variants were inside the same read.Result: NULL, AND NOW A COMPLETE-INDEX NULL. In the whole El set there are exactly THREE primary DEATH rows for Warren County: "Elizabeth Cooper, 4 Sep 1850", "Emma Elmira Jane Cooper, Feb 1863", and "Elsy Cooper, 20 Jul 1869" - and the last is already held as [F.285] and already excluded (aged 40, parents Robert & Sarah Cooper, Hope Twp). The Sussex El deaths are 1853, 1854 and 1859, all before the 1860 census that has her alive [D.469]. ⇒ No death record for her exists in the New Jersey state vital index for 1860-1878 under any spelling. TWO "Non primary" rows in the set are worth naming so nobody re-opens them: an "Eley Cooper" and an "Elsy Cooper", both dateless. Those are the two spellings [C.29] and [C.28] use for her, and both of those records - her sons' marriage returns, which name her as a parent - are already in this file's
entries:. A relative-row is what such a record looks like in this index. AND THE REAL ANSWER MAY BE THAT NO INDEX COVERS IT. Read coll. 61260's title: "1848-1878, 1901-2017". ⇒ NEW JERSEY HAS NO STATE DEATH INDEX AT ALL FOR 1879-1900 - the same 22-year hole already recorded for births in [[feedback_ancestry_place_recipe_when_names_are_garbled]]. She was 60 and in good enough health to head her own household in 1860; she could easily have lived into the 1880s. ⇒ The gap splits in two, and only ONE half has been searched: 1860-1878 is now a hard null, and 1879-1900 is NOT COVERED, which is a different statement and must not be written up as a null. A METHOD NOTE FROM THE SAME PASS, recorded in the guidance note: coll. 61260's two halves do not answer the same query. Its 1848-1878 rows carry no date and no place at all, so any date bound - and even a given name - silently drops that half of the collection. (a) above was run unbounded for exactly that reason.familysearch records 2026-10-15 · HER MARRIAGE TO JOSEPH COOPER Joseph Cooper, on FamilySearch's record indexes, from HER side: surname Stackhouse, given Els* (wildcard,...

Collection 1803976 ("New Jersey, County Marriages, 1682-1956"): SURNAME STACKHOUSE ALONE, marriage 1815-1835, place New Jersey, no given name, no spouse surname - so that a Cooper mis-indexed, mis-read or left blank could not suppress her row. This is also the "fuller read of the Sussex film" that Joseph Cooper's 2026-09-21 row left owing: the register is arranged by officiant rather than by date, so the index - not a page-by-page browse - is what covers the reel.
Result: 63 rows, the complete set on one page, all read. NO STACKHOUSE x COOPER MARRIAGE IS INDEXED ANYWHERE IN NEW JERSEY 1815-1835. Full list of the Sussex/Warren rows is recorded at Joseph Cooper. Most marriages appear two or three times because the collection indexes the CLERK'S BOUND REGISTER (DGS 004541238) and the OFFICIANT'S LOOSE RETURNS (DGS 004541257) as separate rows - so BOTH Sussex reels are inside this one search, and her marriage is on neither. ⇒ Her marriage to Joseph Cooper was not returned to the Sussex County clerk, or was returned and lost, or took place outside the counties this collection covers. NOT closed by this: a church register, another county, or a marriage never returned at all - none of which an index can disprove.

Searched for: THE ONE APRIL-1822 STACKHOUSE MARRIAGE, on the officiant's own paper rather than the clerk's copy - per the standing rule in [film.004541257] that a Sussex register page of 1809-1827 always has a richer loose return behind it.
Result: FOUND -> [C.150], DGS 004541257 image 1246. "April 11th 1822 - I Married JOSEPH BELL OF HARDWICK to ELSA STACKHOUSE OF THE SAME PLACE", in James Dewitt's own hand, read at 3x. THE BRIDE'S TOWNSHIP IS NEW - the register copy [C.113] drops it - and she was OF HARDWICK, where this woman and her husband are documented in INDEPENDENCE ([D.4] 1850, [D.469] 1860). "Bell" is also now attested in a second, independent hand. Leans against the 1822 bride being her, without excluding it: the townships adjoin, and the rival reading (a Bell widow who remarried) requires her to move in any case. Both readings stay open - see [name.602].

Then, per the Suggested- records rule, the two leads that panel raised for her were opened: "Mrs Elsie Cooper" in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, U.S., Church and Town Records, 1669-2013 (coll. 2451), and the NJ index rendering "Elsa Stackhouse".
Result: NULL on all three. (a) The only NJ Stackhouse marriage in the window is the 11 Apr 1822 Sussex Co. event already held as [C.113], indexed twice - "Eliza Stackhouse" (NJ Compiled Marriage Records) and "Elsa Stackhouse" (NJ Marriage Records 1670-1965, coll. 61376, film 004541257). Opening the latter gives "Spouse: JOSEPH BELL", so a second independent index confirms the register image: that marriage is NOT hers. (b) "Mrs Elsie Cooper" (coll. 2451) is NOT her - the record is a RESIDENCE at Fort Washington, Philadelphia Co., PENNSYLVANIA, St. Paul's United Church of Christ, with no date given at all; she lived her whole documented life in Independence Twp, Warren Co., NJ ([D.4] 1850, [D.469] 1860).
