The day and month fields of the return period are left blank on the form. The caleb cooper entry verbatim

Jany 30 · ages 23 (M) / 19 (F) · Single / ditto · by whom married Ephraim Lemander[?] of Vienna, official station [dittoed] · where married Vienna · names of parties Caleb S Cooper / Amanda J. 🎯 the parents column was never read until 2026 09 08

This entry has existed since 2026-05-21 and never read the Names of Parents column. It captured the names of the parties, the township, the year and the bride's ambiguous surname — and stopped one column short of the field that makes a marriage return valuable. It reads Joseph & Eley Cooper. ⇒ A third independent naming of Joseph Cooper Joseph Cooper's wife, after [F.139] (Calvin's 1919 death certificate, "Maiden Name of Mother: Elsie Stackhouse") and [C.28] (Robert M.'s 1864 marriage return, "Joseph & Elsy Cooper"). And it exposed a structural gap: Joseph Cooper carried no marriages: key at all and none of his six children carried a mother: key, so a woman locked by three primary sources was invisible to every export. She now has a file at Elsie (Stackhouse) Cooper.

And it settles this entrys own open question

The date is Jany 30 — 30 January 1858. This entry recorded "Year: 1858 (exact month + day pending zoom on the date column)" and carried that gap for three and a half months. Corroborated by the Ancestry index, which gives 30 Jan 1858 for pId 1423473.

⚠️ an index error on the adjacent row

Ancestry indexes a second record on this page as "Caleb S Cooper, Marriage, 3 Sep 1857" (pId 1423472). It is not his marriage. That record is John L. Apgar, cabinetmaker of Warrenville, aged 36, son of Conrad & Doborah Apgar — and the index has attached Caleb S Cooper to it as the SPOUSE, pairing a groom with a groom from an adjacent row. Recorded because a search on "Caleb Cooper marriages" returns TWO Warren hits and they look like two marriages. They are one marriage and one indexing error. Sixth index defect logged in this collection; see [F.278], [F.217], [F.272].

✅ the surname is batley and the mother is huldah m

RESOLVED LATER THE SAME DAY, BY A DIFFERENT RECORD. [D.596], the 1850 census of Independence Twp, gives George Batley, 41, born ENGLAND, Farmer at dwelling 179 with wife Huldah M, 40 and a daughter Amanda J Batley, aged 13. Father's given name, township and daughter's age all match ⇒ the surname is Batley, closing an ambiguity the catalog carried from 2026-05-21. AND IT CORRECTS THIS ENTRY. The mother's cell was first written up as [Isabella?] — a guess at a cell that had not resolved. With Huldah M supplied as the candidate, the cell was re-read at 18×: the M. is unmistakable and the preceding word fits Huldah. ⇒ Now recorded as George & Huldah M Batly. The method note worth keeping: a cell that will not resolve on its own often resolves at once when an independent record supplies the candidate. Find the candidate before straining the magnification.

The brides surname did not resolve on this page

DO NOT RE-PULL THIS IMAGE TO SETTLE THE SURNAME. The register writes it twice — Names of Parties and Names of Parents — and neither resolves at 9× or 14× with autocontrast on a 4406×3687 capture. ⇒ The ambiguity is in the ink, not in the reproduction. And a different record did settle it — see the block above. Do not re-pull image 155 for the surname.

And the ages

Caleb 23 ⇒ b. ~1834/35, against Caleb Swayze Cooper's 20 MAR 1834 from [L.90]/[D.286]/[G.152] — consistent. Amanda 19 ⇒ b. ~1838/39, against Amanda J. (Batley) Cooper's 1838 — consistent (she would turn 20 in November 1858).

Great meadows again

Both parties' residence is Great Meadows — the same locality [F.216] gives as Joseph Cooper Joseph's place of death and place of birth, and [F.278] gives as John Cooper John's birthplace ("Meddows"). The family was still seated there in 1858, six years after Joseph's death.

Transcription and notes

The header, the entry, the parents column and the surname question are in the coverage: header.

The column this entry stopped one short of

Jany 30 · 23 / 19 · Single · Ephraim Lemander[?] of Vienna · Vienna · Caleb S Cooper / Amanda J. [B?]atley · Great Meadows · Joseph & Eley Cooper / George & [Isabella?] [B/M]atl[e]y · Farmer

This entry was written on 2026-05-21 and read the names, the township, the year and the bride's ambiguous surname. It did not read the Names of Parents column — the field that is the whole reason a marriage return outranks a death return for parentage work.

Joseph & Eley Cooper — a third independent naming of [p.112] Joseph Cooper's wife, and the finding that gave her a person file at [p.2055] after the catalog had held her name in prose alone.

Two Caleb marriages in the index, one marriage on the page

Ancestry returns two Warren hits for Caleb S Cooper — 3 Sep 1857 and 30 Jan 1858. The first is John L. Apgar's marriage with Caleb's name wrongly attached as spouse from an adjacent row. One marriage, one indexing error.

The bride's surname is closed against this document

The register writes it twice and neither instance resolves at 14× with contrast enhancement. The ambiguity is in the ink. Her father George in a census is the way through.

Surname-spelling debate

The bride's maiden surname has multiple spelling variants across catalog sources:

Source Spelling Reliability
4 Ancestry trees for Caleb's children (L.91/L.92/L.93/L.94) Batley tree-tier (low) but 4x-attested
G.152 Find A Grave companion stone Batley stone-inscribed primary-source-tier ("AMANDA J. BATLEY 1838 — 1915")
Maintainer's filename of this register image Butley maintainer's reading
C.29 register cursive (= this entry) B[?]atley / Bratley / Bartley (cursive register) primary-source register but cursive-uncertain

= Multiple plausible spellings. Best catalog approach: treat as "Batley" in catalog default per the companion-stone inscription (G.152 Find A Grave photo = primary-source stone inscription = strongest single source), with this register entry's cursive flagged as ambiguous.

Catalog stub at p.171 Amanda J. (Batley) Cooper retains "Batley" spelling pending further evidence.
