Reading notes
WHAT THIS DOCUMENT IS, AND THE TWO COLUMNS IT LEAVES EMPTY. It is a typescript INDEX, not a return: it carries no ages, no parents, no officiant, no witnesses and no residence. THE "PLACE OF MARRIAGE" COLUMN IS BLANK ON THIS ROW - AND ON EVERY ROW OF THE PAGE. So the index does NOT say where in New Jersey the marriage happened. Ancestry's search result renders the place as "New Jersey, USA", which is the collection's scope and not a reading. THE DATE COLUMN IS SPLIT "(MO.)" AND "(YR.)", AND THE MONTH SUB-COLUMN IS BLANK on this row and throughout. ⇒ The record gives a YEAR ONLY. Any month attached to this marriage later must come from somewhere else. The state-file figure is printed as two separated numbers, 6 and 230, under one heading "STATE FILE NO." - recorded here as written rather than joined, since the page gives no key to what the two parts mean. The husband's column is headed "NAME OF HUSBAND (LAST)" and the entry reads surname-first, "COOPER CLARK" - i.e. Clark Cooper, with NO middle initial. The index's own convention, not a statement that he had none.
Transcription and notes
Printed heading: MARRIAGES. Column heads: MAIDEN NAME OF WIFE · NAME OF HUSBAND (LAST) · STATE FILE NO. · PLACE OF MARRIAGE · DATE OF MARRIAGE (MO.) (YR.)
Verbatim — the transcribed row
| Maiden name of wife | Name of husband | State file no. | Place of marriage | Mo. | Yr. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ACKERSON LAURA | COOPER CLARK | 6 · 230 | (blank) | (blank) | 1906 |
The two rows that fix its position, read but not otherwise transcribed:
| ACKERSON KATHERN | BLANCHARD AMOS | 3 · 438 | (blank) | (blank) | 1904 | | ACKERSON LAURA | FROEMEL JAMES | 9 · 634 | (blank) | (blank) | 1905 |
There are TWO Laura Ackersons on this page, married a year apart — the Froemel row immediately below the Cooper row. They are recorded together on purpose: a reader scanning for "ACKERSON LAURA" meets both, and the only thing separating them is the husband's column.
