Searched for: HIS TWO MARRIAGES - to Laura M. (Ackerson) Cooper Laura M. Ackerson and to Nellie M (Washer) Cooper Nellie M. Washer - both of which the gap report carried as "no search recorded". THREE COLLECTIONS, read by COUNT first. (a) "New Jersey, U.S., Marriage Records, 1670-1965" (coll. 61376),
?name=Clark_Cooper&count=50 - 101 rows, ALL THREE PAGES READ; and ?name=Laura_Ackerson - 7 rows, all read; and ?name=Nellie_Washer - zero. (b) THEN THE CARD CATALOG, which is the step that actually worked: keyword "New Jersey marriage", which shows that 61376 is not the only New Jersey set. It surfaced "New Jersey, U.S., Marriage Index, 1901-2016" (coll. 61253) - images of the State Archives' own typescript bride and groom indexes, a collection this catalog had never used. (c) In 61253: ?name=Clark_Cooper&count=50 - 236 rows, page 1 read (the collection is overwhelmingly post-1960 and the index ranks the early rows first); ?name=Nellie_Washer - 4 rows, all read; ?name=_Washer&count=50 - 312 rows, page 1 read.Result: FOUND, IN THE COLLECTION THAT HAD NEVER BEEN TRIED: "ACKERSON LAURA · COOPER CLARK · 6 230 · 1906" - New Jersey State Archives Bride Index 1904-1909, surname range A-C, image 46999_543868-00013. Downloaded, filed and read on native-resolution crops = [C.155]. His first marriage now has a YEAR where it had nothing. A year and no more: the index's Place and Month columns are blank on every row of the page. AND AN UNRESOLVED RIVAL, RECORDED AS ONE RATHER THAN SETTLED. The same collection holds "Clark C Cooper × EFFIE M HOOEY, 1916, New Jersey, certificate 07366" (Bride Index 1915-1919, surname range F-H; indexed twice, as "Hooey" and as "Hovey"). It was opened. IT CANNOT BE THIS MAN IF THE CATALOG'S OWN DATES ARE RIGHT: Laura died in 1918 [G.218], two years after 1916, and his second wife Nellie M. Washer was born 13 Sep 1902 Nellie M (Washer) Cooper and so was fourteen. ⇒ Either there is a second Clark C. Cooper in New Jersey, or one of those two dates is wrong. NOT ASSERTED EITHER WAY. Note that Ancestry attaches the SAME suggested- records panel to both marriages, i.e. its engine has already merged the two men - a reminder that the panel is a lead list, not an identification. NOTHING FOR THE NELLIE WASHER MARRIAGE IN EITHER COLLECTION. 61376 returns zero for her name; 61253 returns four Washers of that initial, all 1957-1982, none a Cooper. AND THE COVERAGE IS THE LIKELY REASON: the complete 312-row Washer list in 61253 begins at 1932 with a handful of 1930s rows and is otherwise 1967 onward, so the state index's own early decades are thin for this surname. His marriage to Nellie is therefore NOT shown to be outside New Jersey - but it is worth remembering that he died at Middletown, Orange Co., NEW YORK [G.215], and a New York marriage would not be in a New Jersey index at all.
