Catalog-defining attestation — Samuel × Elizabeth marriage PRIMARY-SOURCE-LOCKED

Catalog significance

Primary-source-locks p.472 Samuel Cooper Sr × p.473 Elizabeth Betsy Brown marriage at NJSA-tier (Morris Co. Court marriage records).

Chronological implications: - Marriage 31 March 1795 = AFTER death of Samuel's 1st (unknown) wife (per [L.120] tree: 1st wife "died Bef. 1796"; 1795 marriage to Elizabeth Brown confirms 1st wife dead by March 1795 at latest) - Children of Samuel Sr born BEFORE 31 March 1795 = from 1st (unknown) wife: - Stephen Brown Cooper b. ~1780 [[p.502]] - Mary Cooper Hunt b. 9 Feb 1780 - Mehetabel Cooper b. 2 Jan 1782 [[p.471]] - Elizabeth Cooper b. 18 Apr 1785 [[p.474]] - Harriet Cooper b. Oct 1787 [[p.504]] - Children of Samuel Sr born AFTER 31 March 1795 = from 2nd wife Elizabeth Brown (= Betsey Brown): - Abbie + Mercy + Charlotte + Daniel Losey Cooper + Obadiah Seward Cooper + Samuel + Nathan Mulford + Deliverance "Dilly" Brown Cooper [[p.476]]

CATALOG CORRECTION: p.471 Mehitable + p.474 Elizabeth + [p.504 Harriet] are biological children of Samuel's 1st (unknown) wife, NOT of Elizabeth Brown. [L.116] tree's identification of Elizabeth Brown as their mother is WRONG; she was their STEPMOTHER from 1795 onward.

"B middle initial = Brown" hypothesis refinement: - Stephen B(rown) Cooper b. ~1780 — his middle name "Brown" PREDATES the 1795 marriage to Elizabeth Brown — = the Brown middle name is NOT from Elizabeth Brown (= step-mother) but from earlier-family-connection (= the 1st-wife's family-of-origin? OR Stephen's stepmother's family honored before her marriage to Samuel — implausible) - Most plausible: Samuel's 1st wife was ALSO a Brown (different Brown family from Elizabeth Brown 1765) — and Stephen B got his middle name matronymic-style from his biological mother who was a Brown - Deliverance Brown Cooper 1808 (= [p.476]) — m. AFTER 1795, biological daughter of Elizabeth Brown × Samuel = matronymic from THIS Brown line - Two-Brown-line hypothesis: Samuel Sr's 1st wife = a Brown (= Stephen B + others); Samuel Sr's 2nd wife = Elizabeth Brown 1765 (= Dilly + others). Both "Brown" but possibly different Brown families.
