Cooper-relevant content (verbatim summary)
** PRIMARY-SOURCE CONFIRMATION OF CHARITY COOPER × JACOB HAAS, 12 JUNE 1813, SOMERSET CO. NJ. Officiant Charles Hardenbergh** (likely Rev. Charles Hardenbergh of Somerset Co.; the surname "Hardenbergh" recurs three times on this same page).
This is the third of Benjamin Cooper's three named daughters now confirmed by primary source: - Polly Cooper (1780-1817) m. Joseph Cross 1800 + John Annin 1815 — confirmed via G.20, G.23, I.22, I.23, L.10 - Caty Cooper (1783-1871) m. Amos Dayton 1812 — confirmed via C.4, G.19, A.11, I.4 - ** Charity Cooper m. Jacob Haas 1813** — THIS ENTRY, confirmed via 3 Ancestry indexes + register-image screenshot
Officiant identification — Charles Hardenbergh
The officiant Charles Hardenbergh appears multiple times on the same page (entries for Hoagland William 1814, Hummer Peter 1815) and once with the spelling Charles Hardenburgh for the Hoagland 1814 entry — same person, scribal variation.
This is most likely Rev. Charles Hardenbergh of one of the Reformed Dutch / Presbyterian churches of Somerset Co. NJ (likely Bernards / Basking Ridge / Lamington area). The Hardenbergh family was a prominent NJ Dutch family of clergymen and academics (Rev. Jacob Rutsen Hardenbergh was first president of Queen's College / Rutgers; multiple later-generation Hardenberghs entered ministry).
Calculated facts from the marriage
- Bride age at marriage: unknown — Charity Cooper's birth date is NOT in the catalog as of this entry. Per memory note
pr.12 Benjamin daughters per Littell.md, Craddock I.22 lists Charity as Benjamin's daughter without a birth date. If Charity was the daughter of Benjamin's first wife Charity Hoff (d. 1763), Charity would have been born before 1763 — making her ~50+ at this 1813 marriage, which is implausibly late. More likely Charity was the daughter of Benjamin's third wife Mary (mother of Polly b. 1780 and Caty b. 1783), placing Charity's birth in the 1785-1790 window — making her ~23-28 at this 1813 marriage, age-typical. - Groom: Jacob Haas of Liberty Corner. Per memory note
todo.md, Jacob Haas was of Liberty Corner / Bernards Twp., Somerset Co. NJ — same area as the Charles Hardenbergh officiant. Their children per Craddock I.22: Lydia, Sarah Elizabeth, Job [middle-name[?]], Gilbert A., Charity Cooper, John Calvin.
Observations and notes
- ** Same Ancestry-index pattern as C.4 (Caty Cooper × Amos Dayton 1812). Both Cooper daughters' marriages appear in the same two Ancestry collections (NJ Compiled Marriage Records 1684-1886 + NJ Marriage Records 1670-1965); both have film 004836103 as a source film. Charity's marriage additionally has film 004541239** as a SECOND source film — one year later than Caty's marriage, the register may have been duplicated or filed in two volumes.
- Register-image screenshot is decisive. Unlike Caty's C.4 entry where only the index is captured, this Charity entry has the actual register image showing the Cooper-Haas-Hardenbergh-1813 line in groom-alphabetic order. Reading "Charity Cooper" is unambiguous.
- Officiant Charles Hardenbergh recurs on the page for at least 3 marriages (Haas-Cooper, Hoagland-Arrowsmith, Hummer-Cane) all 1813-1815. Confirms a Somerset Co. NJ minister active in this window.
- No mention of bride's father on the index — ditto for C.4. The actual marriage record images (when ordered) may name fathers; the indexes do not.
- Note: the screenshot shows entries in groom-alphabetic order, so the chronology is mixed (the Haas entry June 1813 is between September 1813 and June 1814 entries on the same page — alphabetic sort, not date sort).
Catalog impact
- ** PRIMARY-SOURCE CONFIRMATION of Benjamin's THIRD daughter Charity Cooper (after Polly + Caty already confirmed).** Closes the "Charity Cooper" identification question per project
pr.12 Benjamin daughters per Littell.md. Charity was a real person who married Jacob Haas 12 June 1813 in Somerset Co. NJ. - ** OPENS forward-trace path — if Charity + Jacob Haas had children (per Craddock: 6 children including a son Gilbert A. Haas + a son John Calvin Haas**), her descendants carry autosomal Cooper DNA from Benjamin. Same forward-trace playbook as Polly via Annin/Sheldon (per memory + todo.md) and Caty (childless per A.11 will).
- NEW LEAD — officiant Charles Hardenbergh of Somerset Co. NJ as a possible point-of-contact for additional Cooper-Haas family-of-origin information. If the original 1813 marriage record (held by film 004836103 or 004541239) names the bride's father, this would be primary-source-grade confirmation of "Charity Cooper, daughter of Benjamin Cooper" — directly parallel to the G.19 gravestone of sister Caty.
- Tagged
[verbatim]for the register-image data + the Ancestry index data.
Open questions / follow-up
- ** Pull the underlying record image from film 004836103 OR 004541239** — would (a) confirm reading of "Charity Cooper" + "Jacob Haas," (b) name the bride's father if the register field exists, (c) name witnesses, (d) name groom's family-of-origin if recorded. Either film should suffice; 004541239 is the film whose image 46 was already screenshot.
- Trace Jacob Haas's family — per Craddock I.22, "Jacob Haas of Liberty Corner." Locate Jacob Haas's birth, parents, prior marriage(s), Find A Grave memorial. Liberty Corner is a hamlet in Bernards Twp., Somerset Co. NJ — same parish area as Polly Cooper Cross/Annin (G.20) and Caty Cooper Dayton (G.19).
- Find A Grave search for "Charity Haas" in Bernards Twp / Liberty Corner / Basking Ridge area — Charity should have a gravestone, and (per the G.19 precedent) it may explicitly state "daughter of Benjamin Cooper" as Caty's stone does.
- Trace the 6 Charity + Jacob Haas children per Craddock I.22: Lydia, Sarah Elizabeth, Job [middle-name
[?]], Gilbert A. (Y-line carrier candidate), Charity Cooper Haas, John Calvin (Y-line carrier candidate). Sons Gilbert A. + John Calvin are the Y-line carriers (autosomal-only since they don't carry Cooper Y-DNA, but autosomal DNA from Benjamin would still be present); their forward-traceable descendants would be useful for autosomal triangulation per projectpr.14 Two paths to Benjamin male descendants.md. - Resolve Charity's birth date / mother identification — was she daughter of Benjamin's 1st wife Charity Hoff (d. 1763) — implausible because she'd be 50+ at marriage — or of Benjamin's 3rd wife Mary (after Polly 1780 + Caty 1783) — making her ~23-28 at 1813 marriage, plausible.
- Charles Hardenbergh officiant — identify which Reformed/Presbyterian church he served in 1813 Somerset Co. NJ. If Bernards / Basking Ridge / Lamington Reformed or Presbyterian, the church session records of that congregation may carry baptism/membership/communicant records for Charity Cooper Haas family.

Format clarification: "Record of Marriages from [date] to [date]" double-page index spread; alphabetical-by-groom-surname; 6 columns: Male / Female / Officiating Clergyman / Month / Day / Year. The Haas-Cooper entry sits among ~30+ adjacent H-surname Somerset Co. marriages spanning ~1812-1829.
** NEW CONTEXT from full-page view — Hoff-surname recurrence within same alphabetical block:**
| Groom | Bride | Officiant | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hoff Lewis | Mariah Quick | Gabriel Ludlow | December [?] 1820 |
| Hoff Stephen R | Gertrude Williamson | John Boggs | October [?] 1820 |
| Hoff Elijah P[?] | Betty Anne Heart[?] | Gabriel Ludlow | [date [?]] |
(Plus possibly more Hoff entries on adjacent images.) ** Significant: Hoff = Benjamin Cooper's 1st wife Charity Hoff's surname (d. 1763 per Craddock I.22). Three Hoff men marrying in Somerset Co. NJ 1820-1829 in the same alphabetical block as Charity Cooper × Jacob Haas 1813 confirms the Hoff family persistence in Bernards Twp Somerset Co. across at least 50+ years post-1763. Per C.14 Result #12: Eliza Cooper × Henry Hoff 18 June 1868** = 5+ generation Cooper-Hoff cross-marriage, autosomal-Cooper-from-Benjamin's-1st-wife candidate path.
** NEW CONTEXT — additional Hxx-surname marriages on same page:** ~30 visible rows including Hoagland, Harrison, Hageman, Hoagland Christopher, Hodge William, Holt James M, Honeyman Joseph, etc. — these are Bernards Twp Somerset Co. family network of 1810s-1820s, the social/church milieu of Charity Cooper Haas's adult life. Reformed Dutch surnames dominate (Hoagland, Hageman, Quick, Vredenburgh) consistent with Reformed Dutch Church Bernards congregation context for officiant Charles Hardenbergh.
Catalog impact of upgrade:
- ** C.14 Hoff hypothesis STRENGTHENED — three additional Hoff men marrying 1820-1829 Somerset = Hoff family was still actively forming new families in Bernards Twp half a century after Charity Hoff (Benjamin's 1st wife) died 1763
- ** New research leads: investigate Hoff Lewis × Mariah Quick 1820 + Hoff Stephen R × Gertrude Williamson 1820 + Hoff Elijah × Heart [date] for any genealogical connection to Henry Hoff (m. Eliza Cooper 1868) or to Charity Hoff's siblings/descendants
- Status remains [verbatim] — register-image content unchanged from prior screenshot, just fuller field of view
- Additional 30+ context rows transcribable on request — partial transcription per memory feedback_full_transcription_policy.md flexibility (Cooper-relevant rows + Hoff-recurrence rows = top priorities; remainder = lower priority bulk transcription)
