What this is

John Littell, Family Records, or Genealogies of the First Settlers of Passaic Valley (and Vicinity) above Chatham — a compiled genealogy of the Passaic Valley families, arranged in chapters by surname, with a separately-bound alphabetical index volume.

The scan. 515 PDF pages. PDF p. 0 is blank and PDF p. 1 is a modern GenealogyCDs.com vendor page — the scan carries no title page, so the imprint year is not readable from this artifact. The PREFACE begins at PDF p. 2 and is signed "JOHN LITTELL. Passaic Valley, New Providence, April, 1852." PDF p. 3 is a printed ERRATA page listing corrections by book page and line, running from page 10 to page 139; no page in the Cooper chapters (90–92) appears on it.

Page offset: book page = PDF page − 2. Verified against book p. 90, which is PDF p. 92 (running head reads 90 / DANIEL COOPER.).

The PDF's OCR text layer is unreliable and must not be quoted. On book p. 90 it renders "Grace Runyon" as Grace ~u n ~ o * and the migration year as 1782 where the printed page reads 1732 (see the Daniel Cooper Sr. section below). Every figure recorded from this book is read off a rendered page image, never off the text layer.

Bibliographic cross-reference: this book is reference #97 in the bibliography of Craddock 1999 (I.22); Craddock's entry 102 (Benjamin² Cooper) cites "#97, p. 90". (A prior I.22 reading that had #97 = Otis Barnstable was corrected 2026-05-17; see I.22.)

Interpretation relocated out of this entry (2026-09-04): the cross-source arguments formerly carried here — the Littell → Mellick → Honeyman → Sisser → Craddock transmission chain, the "[I.65] 1899 biography derives from Littell and is not independent corroboration" judgment, and the reconciliations of Littell against [A.9] / [A.10] / [G.4] / [I.14] — now live on p.1 Daniel Cooper Sr and p.2 Benjamin Cooper, per the connections-as-claims rule.

Verbatim — Daniel Cooper Sr. (p. 90)

"**DANIEL COOPER. The parents of Daniel Cooper emigrated from Holland to New York, in the year 1695. It is said that he was born at sea on their voyage, and that the father never arrived. He was born May 1st, 1695, and married, 17th April, 1726, Grace Runyon, lived in Piscataway, and removed to Passaic Valley, Morris County, in March, 1732. He bought lot No. 2 of the Berkeley tract, containing 500 acres, lying east of and adjoining the quarter owned by Jacob Carle. They had children:

  1. Catherine, who was born January, 1728, and married Colonel Cornelius Ludlow.
  2. Daniel Cooper, Jun., born 14th January, 1729, and died May, 1787.
  3. Agnes, born 15th May, 1732.
  4. Peter, born 11th February, 1735, died October, 1755.
  5. John, born 20th August, 1738, died 31st March, 1778.
  6. Benjamin, born 13th December, 1741, died December, 1794.
  7. Rosannah, born 26th March, 1743, died ___
  8. George, born 20th August, 1745, died 20th September, 1801.
  9. Providence, born 27th March, 1748, died February, 1798.
  10. Anne, born 4th October, 1750, died 5th February, 1795. Anne married Jonas Carle, son of Jacob. [See Carle.]

Daniel Cooper had six wives: 1. Grace Runyon, born January, 1706, and died November, 1755. 2. Jane Westbrook. 3. Grace Manning, died April, 1777. 4. Widow Fanny Jones, died January, 1787. 5. Barbara Margaret Gibbs, who died December, 1789. 6. Hannah Martin, widow of Colonel Ephraim Martin.

He died, 2d May, 1795, aged 100 years.**"

What this page states (all verbatim):

(How Littell's ten children and six wives compare with [A.9], [I.14] Mellick, [J.12] and the baptism registers — including who the sixth wife "Hannah Martin, widow of Colonel Ephraim Martin" was — is worked out on p.1, not here.)

Verbatim — Daniel Cooper Jr. (p. 91)

"**DANIEL COOPER, Jun., Esq, (son of Daniel, 1st,) married, 1st, Miss Conover; 2. Nancy Cross, daughter of the Rev. Mr. Cross. He lived in Passaic Valley, on the 500 acre tract of his father.

By his first wife he had a daughter, Catherine Cooper, who married her cousin, John Ludlow, of Long Hill, son of Colonel Cornelius Ludlow;

And by his 2d wife, Nancy Cross, had children:**

  1. [unnumbered first child — text starts at "2. Lydia"]
  2. Lydia, who married Samuel Annin.
  3. Polly, who married Mr. ___ Crane.
  4. Peter married Susan Boyle, daughter of Joseph, of Long Hill.
  5. William went to Kentucky.
  6. Doctor John, who settled at Easton, Pennsylvania.
  7. Stephen married Mahetabel, widow of John Colwell, and daughter of Colonel Israel Day.
  8. Anne married Alexander Richards, of Rahway.
  9. Betsey married Henry Freeman, of Elizabethtown.
  10. Sally married Capt. David Kirkpatrick, of Mine Brook, as his 2d wife.
  11. Daniel, 3d, who went to Kentucky.
  12. Joseph also went to Kentucky."

Notable data points (verbatim):

Verbatim — Peter Cooper (p. 91, 4th child of Daniel Jr.)

"**PETER COOPER, (4th child of Daniel Cooper, Jun.,) lived on Long Hill, on the 500 acre tract of his father. He and Susan Boyle had children:

  1. William, who married his cousin, Sally Anne Cooper, only child of Stephen Cooper and Mahetabel Day. And she, Sally Anne Cooper, died 25th October, 1846, without children: and he married ___, daughter of Elias Brown, Esq., of Pluckemin.
  2. Caty Anne, who married Abraham Dunn.
  3. Joseph, who died in youth.
  4. John, who also died in youth.
  5. Alexander married, 31st December, 1849, Abby Parrot, daughter of Squier Parrot.**"

Notable data points: Peter Cooper (Daniel Jr.'s son) lived on the 500-acre family tract at Long Hill. He + Susan Boyle had 5 children. Cousin marriages within the Cooper family network (Peter's son William m. his cousin Sally Anne Cooper).

Verbatim — John Cooper (p. 91, 5th child of Daniel Sr., d. 1778)

"**JOHN COOPER, (5th child of Daniel Cooper, Sen.,) married Lynche Boyle, daughter of Solomon Boyle, 1st, and had children:

  1. Lynche, who married William Annin.
  2. Susan married Squier Martin, son of Colonel Ephraim Martin.
  3. Charity married Samuel Sayre, of Madison.
  4. Daniel married Sally Manning.
  5. Solomon, who lived and died on Long Hill, unmarried. He owned part of the 500 acre tract; he was an Elder in the Basking Ridge church.
  6. Neaty married David Crane, of Union, in Essex County. They had no children.**"

(Littell's wife-name "Lynche Boyle" and his daughter-name "Lynche" are worked out at p.270 and p.8 — where the daughter's name as Littell gives it has since been refuted from John's 1778 will manuscript, which reads "Loucreasy"/Lucretia. Littell appears to have carried the mother's middle name down to the daughter.)

Verbatim — Benjamin Cooper (p. 92)

"**BENJAMIN COOPER, (6th child of Daniel Cooper, Sen.,) married and had children:

  1. Polly, who married, 1st, Mr. Cross, 2d, John Annin, as his 2d wife.
  2. Caty married Amos Dayton, son of Jonathan, of Basking Ridge.**"

What the book gives Benjamin: two children, both daughters, neither with a date — Polly (m. 1st Mr. Cross, 2d John Annin as his 2d wife) and Caty (m. Amos Dayton, son of Jonathan, of Basking Ridge). A third daughter, Charity, is named not here but in a note in the Hand chapter at p. 176 (below), as the wife of Jacob Haas.

Littell names no son of Benjamin, and gives him no dates. His section is four lines; his brothers Daniel Jr., John and George each get a full paragraph with birth and death dates. (What that silence does and does not license — in particular for the Y-line question — is argued at p.2, not here.)

Verbatim — George Cooper (p. 92, 8th child of Daniel Sr.)

"**GEORGE COOPER, (8th child of Daniel Cooper, Sen.,) lived where his father and grandfather did. He married Margaret Lafferty, and had children:

  1. Daniel C. Cooper, who went to Dayton, Ohio, and settled. He was the principal proprietor of the town. He was born 21st November, 1773; married Miss Green, in Ohio; had several children; and died, 13th July, 1818; and his wife and children have all died.
  2. Bryan Lafferty Cooper, born 6th January, 1775, died 12th June, 1798, unmarried.
  3. Mary Cooper, born 30th March, 1778, and died 27th Jan., 1794, unmarried.
  4. John G. Cooper, born 24th March, 1780, and died 24th October, 1822, at 42 years and 7 months.
  5. Fanny Cooper, born 20th November, 1782, and died 28th September, 1811, unmarried.**"

(Re-read from the rendered page at 4x on 2026-09-04: Daniel C. is born 1773 and Bryan Lafferty dies 1798. This entry previously carried 1775 and 1796 from the PDF's OCR text layer, which put two brothers' births ten months apart and drew a [sic] flag; the printed page has no such overlap.)

Verbatim — John G. Cooper, Esq. (p. 92, 4th child of George)

"**JOHN G. COOPER, Esq., (4th child of George Cooper, son of Daniel Cooper, Sen.,) lived in the valley where his father did. He married Eleanor Perrine, and had children:

  1. George, who went to Michigan; is Treasurer of that State.
  2. John.
  3. Harriet, who married Calvin Bonnel, son of Enos, son of Benjamin.
  4. Catherine.**"

(Transcribed 2026-09-04 from the rendered page; this section had been missed on earlier passes. The book is in tension with itself over which of John G. Cooper's daughters married which Bonnel: here the daughter is Harriet and the husband Calvin, son of Enos; in the Bonnel chapter at p. 47 (below) Enos's son Alfred marries Henrietta Cooper, daughter of John G. Cooper, Esq. Littell states both and reconciles neither — see p.127 and p.788.)

Verbatim — Hand family p. 176, Charity Cooper Haas NOTE

(From the Gilbert Hand subsection, in the William Hand chapter.)

"[3.] Hannah, who married John Haas, son of Jacob, of Liberty Corner, N. J.

NOTE.—Jacob Haas's wife was Charity Cooper, daughter of Benjamin Cooper. John and Hannah Haas had children: 1. Lydia Haas; 2. Sarah Elizabeth Haas; 3. Job [L?]uno Haas [[?] — middle name OCR-illegible, likely "Lano" or "Luno"]; 4. Gilbert A. Haas; 5. Charity Cooper Haas; 6. John Calvin Haas."

Notable:

Verbatim — Kirkpatrick chapter, pp. 198-199 (Cooper-relevant)

The David Kirkpatrick chapter cross-references several Coopers. Excerpts (verbatim):

From p. 198 (David Kirkpatrick's children):

"5. Polly married Hugh Gaston, lived at Pespack, and had but one child, Samuel Gaston, who married Nancy Cooper, daughter of Henry Cooper, Esq., of Chester, in Morris county. He inherited his father's farm of 300 acres, now owned by John Jeroloman. Samuel Gaston had but one child, Henrietta Gaston."

"7. David, who lived on the homestead of his father. He married, 1st, Mary Farmer, of Parcipany, Morris county; 2d, Sarah, the widow of his nephew, David Kirkpatrick, son of Alexander, and sister of Peter Cooper, of Long Hill, by whom he had no children."

Key Cooper data extracted:

From p. 199 (Alexander Kirkpatrick's children):

"1. David, who married Sarah Cooper, daughter of Daniel Cooper, 2d, and sister of Peter Cooper, and had a son, who died in infancy."

Confirmation: Sarah Cooper = daughter of Daniel Cooper 2d (= Daniel Jr.) AND sister of Peter Cooper. Married first the nephew David Kirkpatrick (Alexander's son); after his death she remarried his uncle David Sr. (the 7th child of the original David Kirkpatrick — see above). Their son by the first marriage died in infancy. By the second marriage, no children.

Verbatim — Ludlow chapter, pp. 264-266 (Cooper-relevant)

The Col. Cornelius Ludlow chapter cross-references multiple Cooper marriages. Excerpts (verbatim):

From p. 264 (Col. Cornelius Ludlow):

"2. Cornelius, who lived on Long Hill, and became a Colonel of the militia in Morris county. He married, 1st, Catherine Cooper, daughter of Daniel Cooper, Sen., and had one son; 2d, Martha Lyon, and had six other children—she died 9th October, 1790; 3d, Polly Wall. He died 27th April, 1812, aged 84 years."

Key Cooper data extracted:

From p. 264 (Col. Cornelius's son John Ludlow):

"Col. CORNELIUS LUDLOW, (son of Jeremiah,) and his 1st wife, Catherine Cooper, had but one child: 1. John, who married, 19th October, 1772, 1st, Catherine Cooper, his cousin, daughter of Daniel Cooper, Jun., and had five children; 2d, Susan Damon, daughter of John, and had six other children."

Key Cooper data extracted:

From p. 264-265 (John Ludlow's family):

"JOHN LUDLOW, (1st child of Col. Cornelius Ludlow,) and Catherine Cooper, had children, who all married in Ohio: 1. Sarah married John Lyon, and had no children. 2. Agnes married Silas Hunt, son of Seth. [See Hunt.] 3. Stephen married, 1st, Jane Porter; 2d, Le Anne Bell. 4. Cooper married, 1st, Elizabeth Reeder, daughter of Jacob; 2d, Elizabeth Layton, daughter of Judge Layton, of Mad River. 5. Lydia married Ogden Ross, son of Matthias, formerly of Springfield."

"His wife Catherine then died, and by his 2d wife, Susan Damon, he had other children: 6. William married Charlotte Hand, daughter of John Hand, from Morris county. 7. Betsey married Matthew Patten, of Dayton. 8. Mary married Alexander Pendery. 9. Martha died at 15 years. 10. Susan married, 1st, Stephen Cummings; 2d, David Bingham, son of David. 11. John married Hetty Niles. 12. Ruth married James Baxter. 13. Catherine married John Long."

"John Ludlow removed to Ohio about 1790, or shortly after, with his family, and lived near White's Station, on Mill Creek, in Hamilton County."

Key data — MAJOR migration finding:

From pp. 265-266 (Cooper Ludlow's children):

"STEPHEN LUDLOW, (1st son of John, son of Col. Cornelius,) and Jane Porter, had children: 1. Oliver, who married Miss Conwell. 2. Mary Anne, who died at 14 years. 3. Catherine, who died at 13 years. 4. John is unmarried."

"COOPER LUDLOW, (2d son of John, son of Cornelius,) had children: 1. Ellen, who married , 2. Stephen married ; 3. John married Elmira ___; 4. Mary Anne."

"LYDIA LUDLOW, (5th child of John, son of Col. Cornelius,) and Ogden Ross, had children..." (continuation, Cooper-family branches).

Cooper Ludlow had children: Ellen, Stephen, John, Mary Anne — fourth-generation descendants of Daniel Cooper Sr., living in Ohio, carrying the Cooper-family genealogy forward through the Ludlow surname.

Verbatim — Carle chapter, pp. 67-68 (Cooper-relevant)

The Carle chapter cross-references Anna Cooper (Daniel Sr.'s 10th child, m. Jonas Carle). Excerpts (verbatim):

"Jacob Carle, lived on Long Hill, on the 500 Acre Tract, which was divided between him and his brother Jonas."

(Note: the Carle 500-acre tract is separate from Daniel Sr.'s 500-acre Berkeley-tract lot No. 2 — per Littell p. 90, Daniel Sr.'s tract lay "east of and adjoining the quarter owned by Jacob Carle." The two Carle 500-acre and the Cooper 500-acre tracts were neighboring but distinct.)

"JONAS CARLE, (son of Jacob,) lived where his father did, and Anna Cooper, had children:

  1. Betsey, who married James Vail, son of Isaac Vail, who was brother of Daniel Vail, Sen. [See Vail.]
  2. Jacob, who died a young man, unmarried.
  3. Elijah, who died in youth.
  4. Anne is unmarried, and lives with her brother Daniel.
  5. Timothy, who died at 19 years of age, unmarried.
  6. Daniel is unmarried, and lives on the farm his father owned.
  7. Sally, married Ebenezer Williams, son of John. [See Williams.]
  8. Lydia, married the same Ebenezer Williams. They live near the crossroads, one mile east of Basking Bridge."

Notable data points:

Verbatim — Boyle chapter, p. 53-55 (Cooper-relevant marriages)

The Solomon Boyle chapter cross-references multiple Cooper marriages. Excerpts (verbatim):

From p. 53 (Solomon Boyle's children):

"9. Lynche, married John Cooper, son of Daniel, 1st. [See Cooper.]"

(The Boyle chapter gives Lynche Boyle, daughter of Solomon Boyle 1st, as the wife of John Cooper, son of Daniel 1st, and — after his death — of Stephen Cooper, son of Daniel Cooper Jun. The Cooper chapter at p. 91 covers the same John.)

From p. 54-55 (Joseph Boyle's children, by Caty Cross):

"4. Susan, married Peter Cooper, son of Daniel Cooper, Esq. [See Cooper.]"

(The Boyle chapter gives Susan Boyle as the wife of Peter Cooper, son of Daniel Cooper Esq.; the Cooper chapter at p. 91 states the same marriage.)

"6. Solomon, married Harriet Parcel, daughter of Captain John Parcel, of Liberty Corner, and had an only child, John Ferdinand Boyle, who married Lydia Anne R. Annin, daughter of William C. Annin."

(Cooper-Annin-Boyle network: John Ferdinand Boyle × Lydia Anne R. Annin, daughter of William C. Annin (a Liberty-Corner Annin patriarch). Multiple-generation marriage cluster between Cooper / Boyle / Annin / Liberty-Corner families.)

Verbatim — Miller chapter, pp. 293-294 (Cooper-Annin-Haas cross-reference)

The Jonathan Miller chapter cross-references William C. Annin and Jacob Stultz Haas. Excerpts (verbatim):

"JONATHAN MILLER, (son of John, Jun.,) and Miss Williams, had children:

  1. Dickerson, who married Jane Kirkpatrick, daughter of David, Sen. [See Kirkpatrick.] and had children: 1. John, who went to Ohio; 2. David, who married ___; 3. Andrew, a lawyer; 4. Dickerson, a lawyer; 5. Caleb; 6. Samuel.

  2. Phebe, who married William C. Annin, of Liberty Corner.

  3. Polly, who married Capt. William Tuttle, of Morris county, and had no children.

  4. Williams, who married Polly Boyle, daughter of Joseph, of Long Hill; lived where his father did and had children: 1. Joseph, who married two sisters; 2. Jonathan; 3. Elizabeth, who married Jacob Stultz Haas, son of Jacob Haas, near Liberty Corner; lives in Darke county, Ohio, near Hill Grove, and keeps a tavern; 4. George."

Notable data points — Charity Cooper Haas's family:

Verbatim — sub-chapter "Robert Boyle" p. 54 fragment (Annin connection)

Boyle p. 54 closing lines:

"3. [Williams Boyle], who married Mary Aletta Annin, daughter of [William C.?] Annin, of Liberty Corner, and went to Jeffersonville, Illinois, in 1848."

Adds another Boyle-Annin marriage and an 1848 migration to Illinois. Cross-references the Liberty-Corner Annin patriarch.

Verbatim — Hand chapter, p. 178 (William C. Annin's daughter Phebe → Hand) [verbatim] (full-book read 2026-06-30)

"AARON HAND, (1st child of Jonathan,) and Hannah Roy, lived at Basking Ridge, and had children: 1. William Roy Hand, who married Phebe M. Annin, daughter of William C. Annin; he is a physician; lives at Ringwood, Hunterdon county, and has children: 1. John Cooper Hand; 2. William Milton Hand; 3. Sarah Hand; 4. Frances Hand."

This page names Phebe M. Annin, daughter of William C. Annin, as the wife of Dr. William Roy Hand [p.1418] of Ringwood, with children John Cooper [p.1297], William Milton, Sarah and Frances Hand. (Phebe M. Annin has no person file yet.)

Verbatim — p. 202 (a William-C.-Annin son Joseph; + the two-Annin-family conflation) [verbatim]

"5. Sarah married William I. Annin, son of John, of Liberty Corner, and had children: 1. Elizabeth Annin married Mr. — Locey, son of Jacob Locey, Esq., of Pluckemin. 2. Sarah Annin married Joseph Annin, son of William C. Annin, of Liberty Corner. 3. Martha Annin married Mr. Castner, son of Peter Castner. 4. Mary Annin, (twin to Martha,) married William Boyle, son of Robert, and went to Illinois. [See Boyle.] 5. Lydia Annin married Ferdinand Boyle, son of Solomon, son of Joseph. [See Boyle.] 6. John A. Annin graduated at Princeton college, studied theology … preaches at Franklin, Warren county, Ohio. He married, 25 Sept. 1851, Elizabeth D. Fisher…"

This page names Joseph Annin, son of William C. Annin, married to Sarah Annin.

The book contradicts itself here. p. 202 makes Lydia Annin (× Ferdinand Boyle) and Mary Annin (× William Boyle, → Illinois) daughters of William I. Annin, son of John; pp. 55 and 57 give the same two Boyle marriages — as "Lydia Anne R. Annin" and "Mary Aletta Annin" — as daughters of William C. Annin. Littell states both, and does not reconcile them. (Which reading the catalog follows is decided at [G.22] and the Annin person files, not here.)

Notable absence — no Annin family chapter

Littell has no dedicated Annin chapter. The Annins appear only as in-laws inside other families' chapters — Boyle pp. 55, 57; Hand p. 178; Miller p. 294; and a William I. Annin family at p. 202. (What can and cannot be assembled about William C. Annin's children from these scattered mentions is worked out at p.5 and on L.4's descendants, not here.)

Bonnel family — page 47 (Enos Bonnel's children; added 2026-06-30) [verbatim]

Littell's Bonnel genealogy (chapter headed "BENJAMIN BONNEL, Esq. (Son of Nathaniel, 1st)", p. 47) reaches the family that married into the Coopers. Verbatim:
