Hand-drawn Family Tree: Descendants of Daniel Cooper and Grace Runyon (1695–1895)
Transcription and notes
Disambiguation when reading this tree — there are TWO men named "John Cooper," and they must be kept distinct: - Daniel Sr.'s son John (1738–1778, Long Hill) = Benjamin's uncle (p.8). His descendants (John G. Cooper, John Cooper Bonnell, Charles Mulford C., Fanny b.1819, Catherine b.1817, Henrietta) are OUT of scope for the CDV line. - Benjamin's son John = the CDV-line subject — "Jno. Cooper" on the H.2 caption, brother of Theodosia Wyckoff, father of John D. Cooper (p.2 → p.105).
Always confirm a leaf's lineage by tracing its branch back to the trunk — "John Cooper" in isolation is ambiguous. (INDEX v9 mis-attributed the uncle's descendants to Benjamin's son; the maintainer caught it.) (Rule relocated here 2026-06-02 from the retired pr.11 — kept on the tree entry so it's seen exactly when this tree is being read.)
- Filename: (image held in the family archive) (8768 × 7871, lossless — the preferred scan for all OCR/structure work; switched 2026-06-11 per L.4-scan-WIP.md). Superseded: (image held in the family archive) (8145 × 7128, lossy) — earlier crops/transcriptions below were read off the JPG; pixel coords differ by ~×1.076 (x) / ×1.104 (y).
- Identification: Hand-drawn pen-and-ink family tree rendered as a botanical tree (single trunk rising from bottom-centre; branches radiate upward and outward with generations on leaves). Title cartouche in the lower-right reads verbatim:
- "1695 – 1895."
- "Descendants of DANIEL COOPER and GRACE RUNYON"
- "of"
- "Long Hill, Morris County, New Jersey."
- "Collated by"
- "Arthur E. Cooper"
- "Cooper's Plains"
- "New York."
- Compiler: Arthur E. Cooper of Cooper's Plains, NY. Undated beyond the "1695–1895" title; the tree covers births through 1895.
- Sources L.4 drew on / independence (2026-06-26): A.E. Cooper compiled L.4 partly from Littell 1851 ([I.4]) — established because Cooper cites Littell by name in his own 1901 NJHS article ([I.131] footnotes) and Brode ([I.130]) lists Littell among the root sources. ⇒ L.4 and Littell are NOT independent witnesses; nor are L.4 and Cooper's own [I.131], nor the downstream [I.130]/[I.36] that were built on this very tree. Agreement within that A.E.-Cooper family = one source, not corroboration — do not raise a fact's certainty on it. Independent confirmation needs an external source (FaG/census/vital record, or a non-Cooper genealogy — Kinsey [I.167], Halsey [I.169], DAR/SAR). See guidance note
feedback_ae_cooper_sources_not_independent.md. - Relation to I.5: Same underlying source. The I.5 entry (Ancestry dbid 17295) cites the online representation of this same Arthur E. Cooper tree. Bullets that previously appeared at I.5 referencing 2017/2019 births, a numbered descent to "John D. Cooper (#94)", gap lists, living-descendant lists, and a Ralph Milligan Cooper Jr. note were research notes — not verbatim data from the tree — and have been removed from I.5. I.5 serves as a cross-reference pointer only; L.4 is the authoritative entry for this source.
- Scope note: Per the 2026-04-21 policy change, this entry transcribes all legible data on the tree, not only Benjamin-relevant material. Sections below are organised by branch. Many leaves on the full tree remain not-yet-transcribed because the available scans have not covered them at readable resolution; those are listed under "Not yet transcribed / follow-ups."
Data — Grace Runyon genealogy annotation (handwritten text block on the tree)
A handwritten annotation block on the tree (not a leaf) reads verbatim:
"Grace Runyon, first wife of Daniel Cooper, was the daughter of Peter Rognion (b. July 1, 1680) and Providence Blackford (m. at Piscataway, N.J., Oct 4, 1704)
Vincent Rognion, Huguenot, father of Peter, married in New Jersey July 17, 1668, Ann Boutcher, daughter of John Boutcher of Hartford, England."
Catalog bullets: - Grace Runyon — described as "first wife of Daniel Cooper." The phrase implies Daniel Sr. had more than one wife — consistent with A.8's 1791 will naming his wife as Hannah Cooper, and with the 27 Oct 1788 Zion Lutheran marriage at F.1 recording a fifth wife (Barbara / possibly Hannah). - Grace's parents: Peter Rognion (b. 1 July 1680) and Providence Blackford. They married at Piscataway, N.J., on 4 October 1704. - Grace's paternal grandparents: Vincent Rognion (Huguenot) and Ann Boutcher. They married in New Jersey on 17 July 1668. - Ann Boutcher's father: John Boutcher of Hartford, England. - Spelling note: the annotation uses "Rognion" (the French Huguenot form); the tree's cartouche uses the anglicised "Runyon."
Data — Thomas Cooper corrective annotation (handwritten text block on the tree)
A handwritten note signed "Thos Cooper" reads, verbatim (re-read 2026-06-18 from a clearer crop):
"I strongly believe that the branch 'John Ludlow' should spring from Agnes Cooper instead of Catherine Cooper, as the second daughter is named Agnes, and as Daniel Cooper only mentions one grandson John Ludlow, son of my daughter Agnes."
— Thos Cooper
(Earlier transcription read "Catharine" / "grand[child]"; the clearer crop reads Catherine and grandson. "son of my daughter Agnes" is the tree-author quoting Daniel Cooper Sr.'s own will-phrasing — cf. A.8's bequest to "John Ludlow the Son of my Daughter Agnes Ludlow.")
Catalog bullets: - Signed "Thos Cooper" — identity of this Thomas Cooper not established by the document. From the phrasing ("my daughter Agnes") he is a generation older than the Agnes whose son is John Ludlow, and appears to be quoting or paraphrasing Daniel Cooper's own voice. - Correction contents: the "John Ludlow" branch on the tree should descend from Agnes Cooper, not Catharine Cooper. Agnes is named as "the second daughter." - Corroborated by A.8 (Daniel Cooper Sr.'s will, 1 Feb 1791): the will names Agnes Ludlow as a daughter and gives a direct £50 to "John Ludlow the Son of my Daughter Agnes Ludlow." A.8 contains no daughter named Catharine. So Thomas Cooper's correction is validated by the probate record.
Data — Daniel Cooper Sr. and Grace Runyon (trunk)
- Daniel Cooper Sr. — at the trunk of the tree as the ancestor. Dates per the artwork not yet transcribed; catalog maintainer has corrected his dates to 1695–1795 (see project memory).
- Grace Runyon — first wife, as the paired trunk figure. Parentage as given in the annotation above.
- Subsequent wives of Daniel Sr. (he had more than one) are not clearly represented on the tree as it has been viewed so far. A.8 (his 1791 will) names wife Hannah Cooper; F.1 records a 27 Oct 1788 marriage to his "fifth Wife Mrs Barbara [Margary?]". Flagged for follow-up.
Data — Children of Daniel Cooper Sr. (Benjamin's siblings)
Per A.8 (1791 will) Daniel Sr. had at least these children. On the tree, each is the root of a major branch; legibility of individual leaves varies.
- Daniel Cooper Junior — deceased by Feb 1791 (per A.8). Had children; his widow's name is not in A.8. Branch visible on the tree; sub-leaves not yet fully transcribed. Confirmed children per A.8 codicil: Lydia (m. Samuel Annin) and Mary Crane, with other unnamed children also referenced.
- Son John Cooper (of Daniel Sr.) — deceased by Feb 1791 (per A.8). His branch on the tree has been viewed in one crop (see "Daniel Sr.'s son John Cooper branch" below). Confirmed children per A.8: Daniel Cooper, Solomon Cooper, Charity Cooper.
- Benjamin Cooper (1741–1794) — the catalog's subject. See the Benjamin Cooper branch below.
- Daughter Agnes Ludlow — the "second daughter" per the Thos Cooper note. Grandson John Ludlow is named in A.8 (son of Agnes).
- Daughter Rosanna Gaston — wife of Robert Gaston Esqr. See the Manning / Gaston family-list insert section below.
- Daughter Providence Manning — wife of Joseph Manning. See the Manning / Gaston family-list insert section below.
- Daughter Ann (Anna) Cooper Carle (p.602, cid 3) — wife of Jonas Carle (p.277). (Correction 2026-06-21: earlier read here as "Anna Earle / Jonas Earle" — a misreading; A.9 + I.130 Brode + both Carle wills A.91 all read Carle.) Children referenced collectively in A.8/A.9; branch now built out 2026-06-21 — 8 children (p.719–p.726), 6 confirmed by A.91. See the cid-3 tracker block in L.4-parse-roster.md.
A.8 contains no daughter named Catharine; Thomas Cooper's corrective annotation above explains the apparent Catharine-on-the-tree as an error.
Data — Benjamin Cooper's branch (main subject of this catalog)
Benjamin Cooper's leaf (at or near the trunk, lower-right of tree): - "Benjamin Cooper" - "b. Dec. 1741" - "d. Dec. 1794" - "m. 1st Charity Hoff" - 1st wife dates include "d. May 1763" - "no issue" (for first marriage) - "m. 2nd wife" — the 2nd wife is left UNNAMED on the tree (the leaf reads "2nd Wife:" with no name following). (Correction 2026-06-17, L.4 parse verification: the earlier "Anna Brown" here was an inference, not lettered on the artwork. Cf. catalog p.2 which likewise records an "unknown 2nd wife.")
Benjamin Cooper's children (branching off his trunk) — consolidated from multiple crops of the same file:
- Mary Cooper — b. 1780 — d. Aug. 1817. = p.5 Polly Cooper Annin (cid38; "Mary"/"Polly" = same daughter, per pr.15).
- m. 1. Joseph Cross — b. 1774 — d. 1809 (corrected 2026-06-17 from "b. 1744 / d. 1808"; earlier L.1 transcription read d. 1800 or 1805).
- m. 2. John Annin — b. 1764 — d. 1824.
- Theodosia Cooper — m. Jacob Wyckoff. (See sub-section below.)
- Charity Cooper — m. Jacob Haas. (See sub-section below.)
- John Cooper — Benjamin's son; ancestor of the John D. Cooper CDV line per H.2. (See sub-section below.)
- (Correction 2026-06-17: an earlier "Sarah Cooper" leaf listed here as Benjamin's daughter is actually a daughter of his son John — see the John Cooper branch below. Removed from Benjamin's children.)
- Catherine Elizabeth C. — b. 1783 — d. Jan. 3, 1871 (L.1's earlier reading was "1872"; current crop reads 1871) — m. Amos Dayton. = p.6 Caty Cooper Dayton (cid37; tree dates b.1782/d.Jan3 differ slightly from p.2's b.1783/d.15Jan).
Theodosia Cooper / Jacob Wyckoff branch
- Theodosia Cooper m. Jacob Wyckoff.
- Children, as shown:
- Gertrude Wykoff (d. Jan. 1885) — m.1 Cornelius Stevenson; m.2 James Cross (Oct. 1814). (Correction 2026-06-17, maintainer-verified: her 1st marriage to Cornelius Stevenson was missing here; children split between the two marriages — see below. Ring-confirmed, tree node cid97.)
- Simon Wykoff — m. 1. Jane Barclay; m. 2. Fanny Thomas.
- Harriet Wykoff — m. Abram Van Horn.
- Jane Ellen Wykoff — m. 1. Cornelius Clark; m. 2. Mott Cannon.
- Amos D. Wykoff.
- Melvina Wykoff — m. Edward Thomas.
Authoritative roster = the published Wyckoff genealogy (I.85). The tree draws only 6 of Theodosia's 11 children. Not drawn: Catherine Elizabeth (m. Zetus Searle — the H.2 CDV "E.C. Searle" candidate), Jacob Harvey, Fanny Cooper, Eleanor C., Israel Ludlow. And the tree's single "Jane Ellen × Clark/Cannon" leaf appears to merge two distinct daughters — Jane Barkley (m. Cornelius Clark) + Eleanor C. (m. Mott Cannon, then Dr. Childs). The reconciled full roster is in p.665; the tree remains the only source for Gertrude's Cross children below.
Gertrude Wykoff's children (split by marriage; ring-confirmed, cid97): - by m.1 Cornelius Stevenson: C.R.W. Stevenson (a son — drawn on a child limb; likely "Cornelius …", named for his father). - by m.2 James Cross: Caroline S. Cross · Martha H. Cross (m. Wm. Cooper) · Mary L. Cross · Clarissa Cross (b. Dec. 1818; m. Francis Runyon) — maintainer ink-read 2026-06-17; corrects both the parse's "1810" and the earlier L.4 "1816" · Israel Cross (b. Jan. 1817; corrected 2026-06-17 from the misread "Ismael").
Charity Cooper / Jacob Haas branch
- Charity Cooper m. Jacob Haas (1813) ( = Benjamin's daughter Charity, p.664; her only marriage — the former "m.1 Sayre 1801" was a different Charity [[p.730]], corrected 2026-07-06 via Banta [I.173]).
- Correction 2026-06-17 (L.4 parse verification, maintainer-confirmed): the earlier transcription of this branch had the two fans inverted. Verified structure —
- Charity's children:
- Elizabeth Haas — m. Dr. Sulphin.
- Archibald Haas.
- Angeline Haas — m. Christopher Tiger (earlier mis-read "Iger").
- Jacob Shutis Haas — m. Elizabeth Miller. (Tree reads "Shutis" = a misreading of "Shultz", per FamilySearch + Find A Grave; = p.679 Jacob Shultz Haas, b. 1817, d. 1854 Darke Co. OH.)
- John Haas — m. Hannah Hand.
John Haas's children (Charity's grandchildren): - John Calvin Haas (earlier mis-read "Colvin"). - Charity Cooper Haas. - Gilbert R. Haas. - Job Lane Haas (earlier mis-read "Ida Lane / Ida Jane"). - Sarah Elizabeth Haas. - Lydia Haas.
John Cooper branch (Benjamin's son; the CDV line per H.2)
A zoomed scan of this specific branch has been examined. The tree carries almost no data on Benjamin's son John Cooper. Verbatim observations:
- The leaf is labeled simply "John Cooper" — no birth or death date, no wife named.
- Update 2026-06-17 (L.4 parse verification, maintainer-confirmed): John (Benjamin's son) is drawn with two children of his own — a son John Cooper (cid104) and a daughter Sarah Cooper (cid101), both bare (no dates or spouses given). So the tree's "Sarah Cooper" is John's daughter (Benjamin's granddaughter), NOT Benjamin's daughter as an earlier reading of this entry had it. These two are relevant to the male-line / Y-DNA question (pr.14).
- No leaf reading "John D. Cooper" is drawn on the tree.
- 2026-06-18 — cid104 "John Cooper" probably = the H.2 CDV subject. The bare-leaf grandson John (cid104) and the H.2 CDV's "John D. Cooper, son of Jno. Cooper" are independently attested by two different compilers ⇒ probably the same man, now filed as p.671 John D. Cooper (CDV subject). The tree's lack of the "D." initial / dates is just the compiler's near-blank knowledge of John's branch (see calibration note in p.2).
Observation re the CDV line: The 1895 tree did not trace Benjamin's son John Cooper's descendants. Evidence for the CDV descent (Benjamin → John → John D. Cooper) must come from other sources, not this tree.
Correction note (2026-04-21): an earlier version of this entry listed John G. Cooper, John Cooper Bonnell, Charles Mulford C. (b. 1851), Fanny Cooper (b. 1819), Catherine C. (b. May 1817), and Henrietta C. as descendants of Benjamin's son John. That was wrong — those leaves belong to Daniel Cooper Sr.'s son John (a different John, deceased by 1791 per A.8). They are correctly attributed in the next section.
Data — Daniel Sr.'s son John Cooper branch (Benjamin's brother John, deceased by 1791)
2026-06-21 reconciliation — this prose list is superseded by the parse + will for John's direct children. The machine-verified parse (cid 8) + John's 1778 will (A.29) give John's 6 direct children as Daniel [p.577], Solomon [p.727], Susannah [p.728], Agnes [p.729], Charity [p.730], Lucretia/"Lynche" [p.731] — NOT the names listed below. The names below (John G. Cooper b.?, Charles Mulford b.1851, Fanny b.1819, Catherine b.1817, Henrietta, John Cooper Bonnell) are later-generation (gen-4/5) and/or misattributed — e.g. "John G. Cooper" is most likely p.127 John G. Cooper of Basking Ridge, a son of George (cid 21), not of this John. Treat the list below as an un-reconciled mid-resolution reading pending a parse-anchored re-attribution; do not cite it for John-of-Long-Hill's children.
Confirmed by A.8 as father of Daniel Cooper, Solomon Cooper, and Charity Cooper. The tree shows additional descendant-leaves on this branch (some read during an earlier scan of the central/right portion of the tree); these should be treated as descendants of this John Cooper, not Benjamin's son John:
- John G. Cooper.
- John Cooper Bonnell.
- Charles Mulford C. — b. Sep. 1851 — m. Dec. 1874 — Annie F. Potter.
- Fanny Cooper — b. 1819 — d. 1881 (date ambiguous; could be 1831).
- Catherine C. — b. May 1817.
- Henrietta C. — d. [date illegible].
[desc] The John-Cooper-of-Daniel-Sr. sub-tree is dense and these readings were gathered from a mid-resolution crop; the exact parent-child relationships between these leaves, and any additional descendants, have not been mapped. Also note that A.8 specifies Daniel, Solomon, and Charity Cooper as his children — those leaves should be findable directly on his branch.
Data — Daughter Rosanna Gaston and family (marginal list insert) [verbatim]
The tree carries a handwritten family-list insert for Daniel Sr.'s daughter Rosanna (m. Robert Gaston Esqr. per A.8 = cid7 on the parse). Re-transcribed 2026-06-18 from a high-resolution crop supplied by the maintainer — this corrects several misreadings from the earlier low-resolution pass (noted inline). Header reads verbatim:
"Robert Gaston & Rosanna Cooper his wife had"
(Earlier crop read the given name as "Roxanna"; the clearer crop + the footer below both read Rosanna, agreeing with A.8.)
Eight children listed (numbered 1–8): 1. Gracey Gaston — b. Nov. 19, 1764. (Corrects the earlier "Emery Gaston" — a misread of "Gracey.") 2. Joseph — b. Nov. 19, 1766; d. [month struck through] 1834; m. Mar. 12, 1789 Margaret Melick & had — their seven children in a second column: (Corrects earlier "Margaret Halock" → Melick.) - Robert — b. 1790. - Charlotte — 1792. (was misread "Claudius") - Rosanna — 1795. (was misread "Arthur") - Aaron — 1799. (was misread "Francis") - Daniel — 1801 [tail uncertain; possibly 1807]. - Mary — 1804. (was misread "Lucy") - Anne — 1808. (the previously-"unread" 7th name) 3. Margaret — b. Dec. 17, 1768 [date possibly 1764; faint]. 4. Mary — b. Feb. 12, 1770. 5. Daniel — b. Apr. 5, 1772 (or 1773; tail faint). 6. Anne — b. Mar. 25, 1774. (earlier crop read "28 May 1774"; clearer crop reads Mar. 25.) 7. Geo. W. — b. Apr. 2, 1777. 8. John — b. Feb. 8, 1780. (the previously-"unread" 8th name.)
Person files (all promoted + sourced beyond L.4, 2026-06-19): parents Robert Gaston p.55 × Rosanna (Cooper) Gaston p.54 (cid7); children 1. Gracey p.696 (m. Hugh Gaston → Ohio; I.165) · 2. Joseph p.697 (× Margaret Melick) · 3. Margaret p.698 (× Daniel Melick) · 4. Mary p.699 · 5. Daniel p.700 · 6. Anne p.701 (= Ann Gaston Chamberlin) · 7. Geo. W. p.702 · 8. John p.703. Published-genealogy corroboration: Hanna I.164 (7 children; Gracey via I.165).
A footer below the main list restates the two parents of this family with full vital dates: - Robt Gaston, the father — b. Mar. 23, 1742 ← CONFIRMED TREE-AUTHOR ERROR. The fresh crop showed the tree clearly reads "1742," but the actual Warrior Run gravestone reads "JAN. 28, 1732" (G.238) — corroborated by Find A Grave + a Gaston register + the M.45 SAR application (4 sources). So Robert b. 28 Jan 1732 (Basking Ridge NJ), not 1742 — Arthur E. Cooper simply recorded the year wrong here. Death Sept. 22, 1793 (stone confirms). (Useful calibration datum: even a clearly-lettered tree date can be factually wrong — verify load-bearing L.4 dates against primary sources.) - Rosanna Cooper, mother — b. Mar. 26, 1743 — d. Jan. 14, 1817.
Correction (2026-06-18): the earlier pass misread this footer as naming a separate "Peter Gaston … Robert Gaston's father" + "Roxanna Cooper … Robert's mother," and flagged a phantom "another Cooper marriage … needs reconciliation." The clearer crop shows the footer simply re-states Robert Gaston (the father) and Rosanna Cooper (the mother) of the eight children above — there is no Peter Gaston and no second Cooper marriage. The reconciliation puzzle is dissolved.
Within-L.4 date note: the cid7 limb label reads Rosanna "b. Mch. 1743, d. Jun. 1817"; this footer reads "d. Jan. 14, 1817" (day-specific) — "Jun"/"Jan" is a likely cursive confusion; the footer's 14 Jan 1817 is taken as the better reading. Marriage date Robert × Rosanna = 13 May 1762 per the cid7 limb label.
Data — Daughter Providence Manning and family (marginal list insert) [verbatim]
The tree carries a handwritten family-list insert for Daniel Sr.'s daughter Providence (m. Joseph Manning per A.8 = cid5 on the parse). Re-transcribed 2026-06-18 from a high-resolution crop supplied by the maintainer — the earlier low-resolution pass got most of the names and several dates wrong (the corrected reading is given here). Header reads verbatim:
"Joseph Manning & Providence Cooper had"
Nine children listed (one per line, with birth-year + spouse). [?] marks a surname still uncertain even in the clearer crop:
- James — b. 1769 — m. Sophia Thompson. (was misread "Denius")
- Anne — 1771 — m. Dennis Ferguson. (was misread "Sarah … Denius Ferguson")
- Agnes — 1773 — m. Noah Parle
[?](surname also readable "Pavle"). (was misread "Stephen … Mark Parsten") - Daniel — 1776 — m. Agnes Stillwell.
- Margaret — 1779 — m. 1. John Hearth
[?](or "Heath"); m. 2. Andrew Liment[?](or "Linent"). (was misread "John Hunt") - Stephen — 1781 — m. Sarah Taylor.
- William — 1783 — m. Anne B. Harned. (was misread "Hathcal")
- Lucretia — 1785 — m. 1. ___ Van Arsdale; m. 2. ___ Castner
[?](or "Eastner"); m. 3. Squier Martin. (was the "unread" multi-marriage line) - Harriet — 1791 — m. Aaron Osborne. (corrects "Martha … m. James Osborne" — both given names were misread)
Person files (all promoted + sourced beyond L.4 via A.90, Joseph Manning's 1812 will — which resolved the uncertain husband-surnames: Anne's = Fulkerson, Agnes's = Pierce, Margaret's = Marsh): parent Providence (Cooper) Manning p.573 (cid5); children James p.704 · Anne p.705 · Agnes p.706 · Daniel p.707 · Margaret p.708 · Stephen p.709 · William p.710 · Lucretia p.711 · Harriet p.712.
Correction (2026-06-18): the earlier crop's "two Stephens / dates possibly 1761,1763,1766" worry was an artifact of the poor scan. The clearer crop shows one Stephen (1781) and a clean 1769→1791 birth sequence; no date predates Providence's first child. The Manning roster is now legible end-to-end.
Relation to L.1
L.1 ((image held in the family archive)) appears to be the same physical artwork as L.4, captured as a close-up of Benjamin's section. L.1's transcription overlaps substantially with the data above; where L.1 has a fuller reading of a particular leaf (e.g. specific dates for Catherine Elizabeth, Mary, or Mary's children by Joseph Cross), treat L.1 as authoritative for that leaf. The two entries are kept separate because they reference distinct scan files on disk.
