The Coopers of Long Hill

Document I.85 · Published Genealogies and County Histories · transcription: verbatim

The Wyckoff Family in America (1950, 2nd ed., Wyckoff Association in America, Summit NJ; ed. Streeter 1934; comp. William Forman Wyckoff) — printed pp. 287–288 entry #56 (=52.) JACOB6 WYCKOFF × THEODOSIA COOPER family = published-source-grade verbatim Wyckoff-genealogy entry naming all 11 children with marriages + dates. MULTI-CORRECTION of L.72/L.74 tree-tier readings: (a) child #6 1808 = Fanny Cooper Wyckoff (NOT James Cooper Wickoff per L.72; resolves the L.72/L.74 conflict in favor of L.74 Fanny reading); (b) Jacob's son (L.72 #3) = Jacob HARVEY Wyckoff at published-level (= primary-source-supersedes the F.108 high-res 'Henry' zoom reading); (c) child #5 = Simon I. (NOT Simon J. or Simon P.); (d) Gertrude's 2nd marriage (Cross) date = Dec. 9, 1814 (NOT 1817 per L.74 + NOT 1812 per F.109). MAJOR CDV-LINE FINDING — E.C. SEARLE RE-IDENTIFICATION: Wyckoff book identifies child #2 Catherine Elizabeth Wyckoff (b. Apr. 1, 1799 — d. June 27, 1884) m. Oct. 6, 1827, Zetus Searle (b. Mar. 13, 1799 — d. May 12, 1880) = Catherine Elizabeth Wyckoff Searle is the strongest E.C. Searle candidate per CDV [H.2](../H-Photograph-CDV/H.2.yaml) caption. DISCONFIRMS L.72's hypothesis that 'E.C. Searle' = Eleanor Conover Wyckoff: Wyckoff book entry 130 explicitly lists Eleanor C. Wyckoff (b. Mar. 18, 1813 — d. Apr. 1, 1908) as m. Mott S. Cannon, m. (2) Dr. Stephen Childs — NO Searle marriage. New datum: Jacob Wyckoff baptized Apr. 23, 1775 in Hunterdon Co. NJ (= same era + place as Theodosia b. 1775/76 White House Hunterdon = same baptismal church candidate). STILL NOT primary-source-locked: Theodosia Cooper's parents (Wyckoff book is silent on her parentage; doesn't confirm Benjamin Cooper 1741-1794 hypothesis from L.72)

Transcription and notes

SIGNIFICANCE — published-source-grade Jacob × Theodosia Wyckoff entry; multi-correction of L.72/L.74 tree-tier readings; E.C. Searle re-identification = Catherine Elizabeth (NOT Eleanor); SILENT on Theodosia's parents

I.85 = the verbatim entry for Jacob6 Wyckoff × Theodosia Cooper from "The Wyckoff Family in America" (1950 second edition, ed. Streeter 1934, compiled by William Forman Wyckoff). Printed pages 287-288 = entry #56 (= old-edition #52). Located 13 May 2026 v193.40 during Theodosia Cooper c. 1775 baptism research per todo.md priority queue.

Why this entry matters at catalog level (5 catalog impacts):

  1. Published-source-grade verbatim list of all 11 Theodosia × Jacob Wyckoff children with dates + marriages + spouses = supersedes L.72 + L.74 Ancestry-tree-tier (per memory feedback_ancestry_family_trees_low_certainty.md).
  2. Resolves L.72 vs L.74 conflict on the 1808 child = published-source unambiguously Fanny Cooper Wyckoff (NOT James Cooper Wickoff) = L.74 reading correct, L.72 reading wrong.
  3. Resolves F.108 Jacob H[?] middle-name uncertainty = published-source = Jacob HARVEY Wyckoff (= supersedes maintainer 2026-05-13 high-res zoom reading 'Henry' per memory feedback_secondary_source_middle_initial_caution.md).
  4. ** MAJOR CDV-LINE RE-IDENTIFICATION OF E.C. SEARLE: - L.72 hypothesized E.C. Searle = Eleanor Conover Wyckoff based on initials match. - I.85 published-source = Eleanor m. Cannon + Childs, NEVER Searle. - I.85 published-source = sister Catherine Elizabeth Wyckoff m. Zetus Searle Oct. 6, 1827** = strongest E.C. Searle candidate (initials reversed, common in 19th c). - = significantly changes the H.2 CDV-caption disambiguation chain identity.
  5. Theodosia's parents NOT stated in book = published-source SILENT on Benjamin Cooper 1741-1794 parentage hypothesis from L.72. Does NOT primary-source-lock the Benjamin → Theodosia parent-child link. Locking still requires (a) Theodosia's c. 1775 Hunterdon Co. NJ baptism record naming father Benjamin OR (b) Benjamin's 1794 will/probate naming daughter Theodosia OR (c) Cooper-side genealogy (e.g., Littell I.4 Craddock framework or further Cooper-family records) explicitly listing Theodosia as Benjamin's daughter.

NO Searle marriage anywhere in entry #130 = published-source FALSIFIES L.72's 'E.C. Searle = Eleanor Conover Wyckoff' hypothesis.

#131 AMOS DAYTON

131. (119.) AMOS DAYTON7 WYCKOFF (Jacob6, John5, John4, Simon3, Cornelius Pieterse2, Pieter Claesen1), born Nov. 12, 1816; died Aug. 5, 1871; married Maria Leverich; married (2) Julia Ann Davis, born Jan. 22, 1827. He was a merchant in New York City.

#133 MALVINA THEODOSIA

133. MALVINA THEODOSIA7 WYCKOFF (Jacob6, John5, John4, Simon3, Cornelius Pieterse2, Peter Claesen1), born Sept. 8, 1820, at Basking Ridge, N.J.; died May 29, 1892, at Sterling, Ill.; married Dec. 15, 1839, Edward Thomas, born 1818, died 1900.

Searle as middle name for Malvina Theodosia × Edward Thomas's daughter = corroborates strong Wyckoff-Searle family connection across multiple cousins. Catherine Elizabeth Wyckoff × Zetus Searle 1827 (the family-prominent Searle marriage) was apparently family-prominent enough that 23 years later her sister Malvina Theodosia named a daughter "Etheta SEARLE" as middle-name namesake (= a cousin of Catherine Elizabeth's children).

Catalog implications (5 catalog impacts post-I.85)

1. Multi-correction of L.72/L.74 tree-tier readings at published-source level

L.72/L.74 tree-tier reading I.85 published-source reading Verdict
L.72 child #6 1808 = James Cooper Wickoff Fanny Cooper Wyckoff (entry #128, b. Dec. 11, 1808 d. Feb. 17, 1889) L.74 reading correct; L.72 reading WRONG
L.72/F.108 child #3 = Jacob Henry [zoom 2026-05-13] OR Harvey [tree] OR Merry [Ancestry indexer] Jacob HARVEY Wyckoff (entry header, birth-order list + book entry #126) HARVEY confirmed at published level; supersedes Henry zoom reading per memory feedback_secondary_source_middle_initial_caution.md
L.72 child #5 = Simon J. or Simon P. (varies) Simon I. (in birth-order list) OR Simon J. (in entry #127 header) [book self-conflicting] Likely Simon I. = correct reading; Simon J. in #127 header may be book-typo
L.74 Gertrude × James Cross marriage = 1817 Dec. 9, 1814 1814 correct per published-source; L.74 1817 reading wrong
L.72 child #4 Harriet 1804 spouse not stated Abraham Van Horn (m. Nov. 2, 1825) New data point

2. MAJOR CDV-line E.C. Searle re-identification

L.72 hypothesized: E.C. Searle = Eleanor Conover Wyckoff (b. 1813), based on initials match.

I.85 published-source DISCONFIRMS L.72 hypothesis at #130 entry: Eleanor Conover Wyckoff m. Mott S. Cannon, then Dr. Stephen Childs, NOT Searle.

I.85 NEW E.C. Searle candidate: Catherine Elizabeth Wyckoff (b. Apr. 1, 1799 — d. June 27, 1884) m. Oct. 6, 1827, Zetus Searle (1799-1880). Initials reversed (C.E. ↔ E.C., common in 19th-c. records).

Catalog implication for H.2 CDV caption chain: The chain becomes Theodosia Wyckoff → daughter Catherine Elizabeth Wyckoff Searle → daughter (TBD) named with H.E. initials → m. Hussey. Wyckoff book is silent on Catherine Elizabeth's children = need separate Searle/Hussey-family source.

3. Theodosia's parents — NOT primary-source-locked at I.85 level

I.85 SILENT on Theodosia's parents. Wyckoff book gives Jacob's full Wyckoff lineage but does NOT name Theodosia's father. L.72 tree-tier hypothesis Benjamin Cooper 1741-1794 = remains unverified at published-genealogy level. Locking still requires Cooper-side source (baptism record, will, or Cooper-genealogy work like Littell/Craddock framework).

Implication for v193.39 todo.md priority: the 'Theodosia Cooper baptism c. 1775 Hunterdon Co. NJ' follow-up is STILL TOP-PRIORITY post-I.85. I.85 narrowed where she'd likely be baptized (= same Hunterdon-Co. region as Jacob's Apr. 23, 1775 baptism, possibly same church) but did NOT itself confirm her parentage.

4. NEW data points surfaced via I.85

5. Strategic Y-DNA / outreach implication

Post-I.85, the Wyckoff line is autosomal (= Theodosia × Jacob children's Y-DNA = Wyckoff Y, NOT Cooper Y), so direct Y-DNA outreach to Wyckoff descendants ≠ relevant for Cooper Y. The catalog impact is on identification: confirms the L.72 family chain at published level + locks E.C. Searle as Catherine Elizabeth (NOT Eleanor) = changes which CDV-line forward-trace path is correct.

Per project pr.14 Two paths to Benjamin male descendants.md: Y-DNA path is unaffected; paperwork path = strengthened by confirmation that L.72 family is real (= corroborates Theodosia as a Cooper-line person, just not yet at primary-source-Benjamin-parent level).
