§1 — Robert Gaston × Rosanna Cooper (book p. 47) [verbatim]
III. Robert, b. Jan. 23, 1732; d. in Turbut (now Delaware) township, Northumberland county, Penn. (buried in Warrior's Run graveyard), Sept. 2, 1793; m. May 15, 1762, in Bedminster township, Somerset county, N. J., Rosanna Cooper, b. March 23, 1742; d. January, 1706; d. November, 1755; lived at Piscataway; settled in Morris county, N. J., about 1732; had issue, ten children). Robert and Rosanna Cooper Gaston resided in Bernard township, Somerset county, until about 1770; then in Pequannock township, Morris county, from before 1771 to 1777, returning thence to Bedminster township, Somerset county, and removing to Northumberland county about May, 1792; served in the Revolution as captain and lieutenant-colonel of New Jersey militia, and as captain in the Continental Line; had issue:
- Joseph, b. Nov. 19, 1766; d. April 18, 1831; m. 1789, Margaret Melick, b. Dec. 22, 1767; d. Feb. 5, 1838; daughter of Aaron and Catherine Miller Moelich (issue: i. Robert 1790–1854 m. Eleanor Shannon; ii. Charlotte 1792–1824 m. James Durham; iii. Rosanna 1795–1845; iv. Aaron 1799–1868 m. Sarah Ann Clarke / Rosanna Camp; v. Daniel, a Presbyterian minister, settled Philadelphia, 1801–1860, m. 1839 Rosa Morris; vi. Mary 1804–1880; vii. Anne 1808 m. William Sample). → p.697
- Margaret, b. Dec. 17, 1768; d. Sept. 10, 1807; m. 1785, Daniel Melick (son of Aaron and Catherine Miller Moelich, of Bedminster) — issue: i. Aaron; ii. Elizabeth; iii. Charlotte; iv. Rosanna; v. John; vi. Mary; vii. David; viii. William; ix. Daniel; x. Catherine. → p.698

- Anne, b. March 25, 1774. → p.701
- George-W., b. April 2, 1777. → p.702
- John, b. Feb. 8, 1780. → p.703
§2 — Catalog significance
- Published-genealogy source for all 7 Hanna-listed Gaston children (= the "one source beyond L.4" goal, now met for children 2–7 that had been register-tier). Birth dates match L.4 exactly (Margaret 17 Dec 1768, Mary 12 Feb 1770, Daniel 5 Apr 1773, Anne 25 Mar 1774, Geo. W. 2 Apr 1777, John 8 Feb 1780) — strong cross-confirmation of the L.4 Gaston family-list.
- NEW: Margaret Gaston (p.698) m. 1785 Daniel Melick (d. 1807; 10 children) — and Daniel Melick was the brother of Joseph's wife Margaret Melick ⇒ a double Gaston–Melick marriage (two Gaston siblings married two Melick siblings, children of Aaron + Catherine Miller Moelich of Bedminster).
- Hanna lists only 7 children — NO Gracey — but this is a Hanna omission, not evidence against her: I.165 (Your Ancestors magazine, 1948) confirms "Grace Gaston, dau. of Robert and Rosanna (Cooper), b. 20 Nov 1764, m. Hugh Gaston" → p.696 is now
certain. Hanna missed her because her line removed to Columbiana Co., Ohio (outside the Ohio-Valley scope). - Robert Gaston: Hanna corroborates b. 1732 (gives "Jan. 23"; the stone reads Jan. 28 — minor), the residence arc (Bernards → Pequannock → Bedminster → Northumberland Co. PA ~1792), and the Lt. Col. NJ militia + Continental Line service. Death "Sept. 2" is Hanna's error (stone = Sept. 22).
- Daniel Cooper Sr (p.1) — a PUBLISHED (1900) attestation of the "born-at-sea" tradition: "Daniel Cooper, b. at sea during the emigration of his parents from Holland to New York, May 1, 1695; d. May 2, 1795; m. six times, 1st, April 17, 1726, to Grace Runyon, b. January 1706, d. November 1755; lived at Piscataway; settled in Morris county about 1732; had issue, ten children." This independently records (a) born at sea 1695, parents emigrating Holland→New York, (b) 6 marriages, (c) 1st wife Grace Runyon, m. 17 Apr 1726 (matches C.44-orbit), (d) 10 children. Directly material to pr.2 (Daniel Sr's parentage) + the House-of-Cooper born-at-sea tradition. Secondary/published — a tradition recorded in 1900, not a primary record; weigh accordingly, but it's an independent published witness to the same born-at-sea story.
§3 — Other Gaston families on the same pages (NOT our line; disambiguation)
Hanna p. 47–48 also covers Robert's siblings (a Joseph Gaston b. 1738-39, NJ militia paymaster, exec. of his father's 1777 will, settled Hardwick Sussex Co.; Martha m. Patterson; Priscilla m. David McCain; a sister m. David Chambers) and separate Gaston lines — John Gaston of Connecticut (b. Co. Antrim, Ireland ~1703); Alexander Gaston (b. 1714); the Hugh-Gaston/Killingly line that produced William Alexander Gaston, Governor of Massachusetts. These are NOT Robert-of-1732's descendants — captured only to bound the entry.
