- I.78 Documents Relating to the Colonial History of NJ — TWO 1749 primary-source Daniel Cooper records: (a) Series I Vol 16 (Journal of the Governor 1748-1755) pp. 89-91 — 28 March 1749 Burlington Council, Gov. Jonathan Belcher in Council commissioning Daniel Cooper of Morris County as 'Quorum' (= Justice of the Quorum of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas); (b) Series I Vol 7 (Belcher 1746-1751) pp. 275-276 — 14 April 1749 sworn affidavit of 'Daniel Cooper Esqr One of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the County of Morris' regarding timber destruction by the Newark/Horseneck rioters in the South-East-Pasaick + Great Swamp region, signed 'DANIEL COOPER'. Together these are the on-disk primary-source documents Schopfer's note (per project pr.3 Daniel Sr 1749 oath of allegiance.md) refers to. Revises Schopfer's naturalization-hypothesis reading: a Crown commission to Justice of the Quorum required the holder to already be a British subject, so the oath Daniel Sr took c. 28 Mar 1749 was the oath of office + oaths of allegiance/supremacy/abjuration as a subject, NOT a naturalization oath.
- I.95 Documents Relating to the Colonial History of NJ Series I Vol 15 (Journal of the Governor Vol III 1738-1748) p. 91 — 1 September 1739 Perth Amboy Council under Gov. Lewis Morris: Daniel Cooper commissioned as one of three Justices of the Quorum for Morris County (alongside Timothy Tuttle + Samuel Swisey), in the FIRST documented Morris Co. judicial commission after the county's 1739 formation. Per image-zoom verification of the printed column structure, Daniel Cooper is bracketed under 'Quor:' (= Quorum), NOT the lower 'Justices' (Justice of the Peace) tier. This is the earliest primary-source attestation in the catalog of Daniel Cooper Sr holding Crown judicial office — 10 years before the 1749 Belcher re-commission per [I.78](I.78.yaml), and 8 years before the April 1747 Newark-Rioter target per [I.94](I.94.yaml). Also Vol 15 p. 563 (December 1747 Council Journal) records 'A Petition of Daniel Cooper and others praying the Same [= relief against the Rioters]' as item N° 2 in a list of papers laid before the House of Assembly in August 1747 — = a NEW catalog primary-source attestation that Daniel Sr PERSONALLY petitioned for rioter relief separately from the 14 August 1747 'Sundry Inhabitants' petition (N° 1). Petition body not yet on disk.

Daniel Cooper named in the afternoon session Justices list alongside Timothy Tuttle, with John Budd + Gersham Mott + Abraham Kitchel + Jacob Ford as Judges. = first image-verified Morris CCP minute-book attestation of Daniel Cooper Sr actually sitting as a Justice in court session, 18 months after his 1 September 1739 Quorum commission per [I.95](I.95.yaml). Closes the long-standing acquisition target identified at I.78 + I.94 + I.95 + [pr.3](../../projects/pr.3%20Daniel%20Sr%201749%20oath%20of%20allegiance%20%28RESOLVED%29.md) for primary-source Morris CCP record of Daniel Sr's judicial service. Plus full township-officer appointment lists for Hanover Twp + Morris Twp for the year ensuing.
- I.98 Morris County NJ Court of Common Pleas Minute Book Vol 1 1740-1754 (FamilySearch DGS 7903187), image 142 of 321, printed pp. 242-243 — Tuesday 28 March 1749 General Sessions of the Peace + County Court at Morristown. Daniel Cooper named as sole Justice present alongside Judges Gersham Mott + John Lindsly + Jacob Ford. = THE SAME DAY as the [I.78](I.78.yaml) Belcher Council session at Burlington that re-commissioned Daniel Cooper as Justice of the Quorum. Daniel Sr was at Morris CCP at Morristown holding court at the very moment the Council was reappointing him at Burlington ≈ 50 miles south — establishing continuity of his judicial service across the new commission. Plus complete township-officer-appointment rosters for Hanover, Morris, Wasock (Walpack), Roxbury (which lists Nathan Cooper Junr = fam.2 Nathan Jr 1725-1797 as Roxbury Twp officer), and Pequannock. Plus Vol 1 page 242 = December 28 1748 Uzal Ogden + Josiah Ogden + Joseph Higbie civil-suit business immediately preceding.

Page 120 contains 'Daniel Cooper Junr Esq^r High Sheriff of Morris County' formally protesting the insufficiency of the Morris County Gaol — = primary-source-image-verified attestation that Daniel Cooper Jr (b. 1729, age 29 in 1758) was Sheriff of Morris County by Sept 1758. Combined with [pr.44](../../projects/pr.44%20NJ%20Colonial%20Documents%20corpus%20scan.md)'s Vol 26 Newspapers Vol VII finding (Daniel Cooper Jr Sheriff 1768-1769), the Daniel-Jr Sheriff tenure is now primary-source-attested across 1758-1769 = at least 11 years. CATALOG CORRECTION: Honeyman [M.24](../M-Societies/M.24.yaml) 1912 attribution of 'Sheriff of Morris Co. 1753-1761' to Daniel Cooper Sr was at least partially wrong — by Sept 1758 Daniel Jr held the office. Also: 'Daniel Cooper Junr Esq Petition for [tavern] Licence ... Daniel Cooper Esq and Joseph Stiles Sureties' = first image-verified father-son surety transaction between Daniel Sr and Daniel Jr.
- I.100 Morris County NJ Court of Common Pleas Minute Book Vol 2-3 (1754-1766) (FamilySearch DGS 7903193), image 66 of 410, printed pp. 117-118 — Tuesday 4 July 1758 General Sessions of the Peace + Inferior Court of Common Pleas at Morristown. 'A Commission from the Honourable John Reading Esq appointing Daniel Cooper Junior Esqr Sheriff of the County of Morris being Read' = the exact moment Daniel Cooper Jr received his Sheriff commission, primary-source-image-verified. John Reading was Acting Governor of NJ 1757-1758 between Belcher's death + Bernard's arrival. Daniel Sr present at same session as Justice of the Quorum. = closes the [I.99](I.99.yaml) Sept 28 1758 attestation by establishing the formal commission date 12 weeks earlier. Final correction to Honeyman [M.24](../M-Societies/M.24.yaml) Sheriff attribution: Daniel Cooper Junior commissioned by John Reading on 4 July 1758, not Daniel Sr.

Daniel Jr (= Daniel Cooper Junr, Morris Co. Sheriff) appeared in court on behalf of his brother Benjamin (= Daniel Sr's 4th son) and confessed judgment for £14.2.6. Case: William Throgmorton suing the Johnson estate executors; Sheriff returned £52.14 of judgments levied; David Ogden motions for Alias Fieri Facias for residue.

Daniel Cooper Sr is NOT on the bench at this session — age 82, possibly retired or just absent. Standard wartime court business: tavern licenses, recognizance bonds 'to keep the Peace & be of good behaviour', State v defendants criminal cases.

George Cooper NOT named in Daniel Sr's 1791 will [A.9](../A-Probate/A.9.yaml) = died between Dec 1771 and Apr 1791.
- I.112 Morris County NJ Court of Common Pleas Minute Books — Daniel Cooper Junr Esq 'LATE SHERIFF' attestations primary-source-locking Daniel Jr's Sheriff-tenure END at before 1770. (2) Confirms Daniel Cooper [Sr] × Grace Runyan + Long Hill residence + 'leading man, justice of the peace and county judge'. (3) NEW LAND CLAIM: 'He located on a tract of five hundred acres along the banks of the Passaic river from Sterling to Long Hill, his deed being signed by William, earl of Sterling and one of His Majesty's commissioners in the state of New Jersey' — = NEW NJSA primary-source-search target NOT YET in catalog K-section. - K.7 Daniel Cooper Junior — 20-year Deputy Surveyor career of East Jersey (1754 → 1774) under James Alexander → Thomas Bartow → William Alexander Lord Stirling — ~45 documented surveys across Morris County for the Eastern Division Proprietors, primary-source-locked via [K.6](K.6.yaml) Morris Co. NJSA Early Land Records search. Catalog-defining significance: this 20-year continuous Cooper-Alexander professional relationship begins in 1754 (10 years after Daniel Sr's 1744 Green Brook Falls land acquisition from James Alexander per [K.5](K.5.yaml)) and extends to 1774 (1 year after the pr.52 Cooper-Stirling 1773 letter), with a documented PRINCIPAL-PARTY land acquisition for Daniel Jr personally on 12 August 1761 (= 100 acres from Robert Hunter Morris, recorded Lib AB.5 page 52, primary-source-locked via 20 Nov 1761 S4 Folio 464-466 manuscript) and continued landholder status through 1785. The Cooper-Alexander/Stirling professional + landholding relationship spans 41+ documented years (1744-1785) across two Cooper generations + three Alexander Surveyors General.
- K.8 Daniel Cooper Junior surveyed Lord Stirling's Great Swamp 1,304.87 total acres (1762-1763) + LONG HILL 101.53 acres (31 Mar 1764) + Horse Pound Brook 48.64 acres (4 Jul 1766) + Horse Pound Brook 421.55 acres (12 Jul 1766 = conveyed to James Anderson + Benjamin Cooper, see K.9) + Pequannock 10.5 acres (24 Jun 1765) = primary-source-LOCKED Daniel Jr's personal surveying for Lord Stirling on Stirling's most important Morris Co. proprietary holdings 1762-1769. Catalog-defining significance: Daniel Jr (= Daniel Cooper Sr's son [p.79]) PERSONALLY surveyed Lord Stirling's Long Hill tract (= the same Long Hill where Daniel Sr [p.1] lived) and Lord Stirling's Great Swamp holdings (= immediately adjacent to Long Hill); the 11 August 1762 Great Swamp survey (S5 Folio 18 = re-recording of S5 Folio 15) is manuscript-read verbatim 23 May 2026 and primary-source-LOCKS Stirling's inheritance chain from his father James Alexander (will dated 2 Jan 1755, Book AB.5 page 1) + mother Mary Alexander (republished will dated 27 Feb 1758, Book AB.5 page 9), in part of Stirling's share of the original James Alexander 13,000-acre warrant dated 20 Nov 1753 (Book W.3 page 43). Daniel Jr's surveying work for Lord Stirling 1762-1769 = the LAND-RECORD INFRASTRUCTURE underpinning the Cooper-Stirling 1773 iron-works partnership documented in [pr.52](../../projects/pr.52%20Cooper-Stirling%201773%20letter%20acquisition.md).
- K.9 Benjamin Cooper [p.2] — earliest documented Stirling-network land transactions Morris Co. NJ — 3 primary-source-attested records 14 January 1761 → 12 July 1766: (1) 14 Jan 1761 — 'B. Cooper' WITNESS on Lord Stirling (= William Earl of Stirling)'s deed of 20.82 acres (2 tracts: 10.54 + 10.28) on Mine Road from Hibernia Furnace to Charlottenburg Furnace, Pequannock Twp Morris Co., TO John Burns for £32, co-witness J. Hoff (= candidate Jacob Hoff = potential link to [p.46 Charity Hoff Cooper](../../people/p.46%20Charity%20%28Hoff%29%20Cooper.md) Benjamin's 1st wife); Morris Co Deed Vol A Folio 428-429 (CMRCL002). (2) 28 Oct 1765 — Benjamin Cooper (Grantee) Conveyance Pequannock Morris Co. FROM Samuel Ford (ux); D-3 (EJ) Folio 46 (SSTSE023) = primary-source-LOCKED Benjamin's earliest documented land acquisition. (3) 12 July 1766 — Benjamin Cooper + James Anderson grantees of 421.55 acres (6 tracts: 33.24 + 49.32 + 101.25 + 141.14 + 50.19 + 46.41) on Horse Pound Brook Pequannock Twp Morris Co., conveyed BY Lord Stirling per Daniel Cooper Junr's survey; S5 (EJ Surveys) Folio 304 (PEASJ003) — based on James Alexander's 1753 13,000-acre warrant via heirs/assigns of Peter Sonmans dec'd. Catalog-defining: This 3-record series anchors Benjamin's Hibernia-area presence + Stirling-network involvement at age 20 (1761 witness) and age 25 (1766 grantee) = 12 years BEFORE the pr.52 1773 Cooper-Stirling letter.
- K.13 NJSA Early Land Records — Daniel Cooper Jr (Deputy Surveyor) 2 March 1758 survey return for heirs of John Harrison of Rocky Hill — 81.2 acres at Dead River, original 100-acre tract that John Harrison had conveyed to John Pound of Piscataway in May 1735 but never surveyed. = EARLIEST PRIMARY-SOURCE-ATTESTED Daniel Cooper Jr Deputy-Surveyor record in Middlesex Co. catalog. Signed by Thomas Bartow, Surveyor General. Cross-referenced to a 26 Apr 1758 council-of-proprietors warrant to Harrison's heirs for 1671.95 acres unappropriated in the Eastern Division of New Jersey 'except Romopock', and to a related Phineas Cox 2 Jun 1758 survey covering the residual ~82 acres of the Pound tract (S.N°2 page 280).
- K.18 NJSA Early Land Records — Daniel Cooper Jr (Deputy Surveyor) 14 April 1762 survey on branches of Dead River, Somerset Co. — 76.18 acres for Joseph Kinnan + John Williams + John Longstreet (good-right and pine-right combined), at the request of Joseph Kinnan. Survey personally signed by 'Stirling' = William Alexander, Lord Stirling, Surveyor General = primary-source-confirms Daniel Jr was already working under Lord Stirling by April 1762 — 2 years earlier than the K.6/K.8 Morris Co. Cooper-Stirling Long Hill attestations, 11 years before the 1773 Cooper-Stirling letter (pr.52). Adjoins Ephraim Dunham's prior tract (book S page 88). Underlying right traces to Mary Alexander's 9 February 1760 deed to grantees (1400 ac of her 6000-ac warrant of 29 November 1757, Lib W4.13), and to Thomas Kinnan's certificate of 3 August 1751 for 109.81 ac pine land (Lib S3.216), assigned to Joseph Kinnan via Lib AB3.298. Same Joseph Kinnan / Thomas Kinnan family that recurs in [K.16 Record 7](K.16.yaml) (Ruth Kinnan 1773 Bernards Town deed signed by Daniel Sr as Morris CCP Judge). Companion to [K.13](K.13.yaml) (Daniel Jr 2 Mar 1758 Dead River survey for John Harrison heirs) — both records establish Daniel Jr's Dead River / Middlesex–Somerset borderland surveying footprint.

James Cooper — Debt on Bond £200, Middlesex & Morris, 1769–1770 — manuscript-read (NJSA free View-PDF, declaration transcribed). The debtor is 'James Cooper … of the Township of ROXBURY in the County of Morris' (declaration p.5, re-read at 240 DPI) — i.e. a Roxbury-Morris (fam.2 Nathan-Cooper territory) James Cooper, NOT the Piscataway/Middlesex man of this entry's first (corrected) draft. £200 bond to Richard Morris executed at Perth Amboy (24 Nov, cover-dated 1761), sealed by James Cooper. Daniel Cooper Jr. (Sheriff of Morris) executing official ([K.30](K.30.yaml) row 60). - M.15 NYG&B Record Vol 40 (1909) — Earliest Baptismal Records of the Church of HARLINGEN (Reformed Dutch) of New Jersey 1727-1734 by William Jones Skillman — CONGREGATION PRIMARY-SOURCE-IDENTIFIED v190 2026-05-06 as HARLINGEN NJ Reformed Dutch Church (= aka Sourland; aka 'op de Millstone' before 1766; same area as Skillman ancestral home). TWO Daniel Cooper × Lucresia Runyon children baptized at Harlingen 1729-1733: (1) Daniel Jr baptized 26 March 1729 (= Daniel Cooper Jr 1729-1787; wits Henry Smock & Ann Van Duyn); (2) CORRECTED 2026-07-11 — the "Anna Cooper baptized ~Oct 1733" is a PHANTOM (= Agnietje 1732 [p.516], not a new daughter). Reading the actual Vol 40 page (PDF p.322 = printed p.289) shows Skillman's entry is "Aug. 16. Anna, dau. Daniel Cooper & Lucresia Runyon" under the year header 1732 — i.e. the SAME 16 Aug 1732 baptism the register image + GMNJ render as Agnietje ([F.176]/[F.222], image-verified "Daniel Cuper / Creesje Reijnjen"). Skillman rendered "Agnietje"→"Anna" (he wrote "Anna" for all three consecutive Aug-16 girls); the v190 "~Oct 1733" date was a mis-read of the page location. ⇒ NOT a separate child; collapses into [p.516]. Daniel Sr × Grace have exactly TWO Harlingen baptisms (Daniel Jr 1729 + Agnietje 1732). Plus 'Sept. 11, 1728. Lucresia Runyon, wife of Daniel Cooper; received by Confession of Faith & baptized the same day' = primary-source 1728 Confession-of-Faith. Lucresia Runyon = Grace Runyon: per Vol 40 editorial note 'the latter being of the same household as Peter Runyon, the editor's paternal great-grandfather' — confirmed by [M.16](M.16.yaml) Vol 38 p. 108 published Skillman-family genealogy = Grace Runyon b. 17 Jan 1706/7 daughter of Peter Runyon b. 1 July 1680 of Piscataway. Latin/church-name 'Lucresia' for English/familial 'Grace'. v190 nuance: Vol 40's series transcribes the anti-Frelinghuysen / Conferentie party register of Harlingen 1727-1734; a separate Frelinghuysen-coetus-party register exists at Holland Society Library per Vol 41 editor's note; latter may have additional Daniel Sr × Grace baptism entries not yet seen.
