Verbatim — Daniel Sr origin narrative (book page 75, image seq_79)

                  DANIEL COOPER

The parents of Daniel Cooper came from Holland
in 1695. Whether they were descendants of the Puri-
tans who fled to Holland from England in the early
years of the century or whether they were of Dutch
extraction is not stated. Daniel Cooper was born on
the voyage on the first day of May 1695. His father
died on the voyage. The family came to New York.
When Peter came into the Elizabethtown Purchase
is not recorded, but it must have been before the end
of the first quarter of the century, for he married,
April 17, 1726 Grace Runyon of Piscataway. They
lived there until March, 1732, when he bought lot
number 2, of the Berkeley Tract, in the Passaic Val-
ley, Morris County and removed to that place. This
tract contained five hundred acres, lying east of and
adjoining the quarter belonging to Jacob Carle, whose
son married Cooper's youngest daughter.

NOTE on "Peter" in this passage: Brode's narrative uses "Peter" where context demands "Daniel" — = either (a) Brode-1932 typo for "Daniel" (= most likely; her source A.E. Cooper 1895 has Daniel throughout), OR (b) preserved-error from her 1895 source preserving an earlier confusion between Daniel Sr and another family member named Peter. This catalog reads the passage as referring to Daniel Sr; the typo is flagged but does not affect the substantive Holland-origin + voyage-death-of-father content.

Verbatim — "THE COOPER ANCESTRY" Daniel Sr's six wives + 10 children (book page 74, image seq_78)

Re-read from the image at 5x, 2026-09-04 — wife #6 is "Hannah Martin", not "Hannah Marbla". This block carried Marbla from the 2026-05-24 pass. The printed line is (6) Hannah Martin. A previous reader's ink annotation crosses the page diagonally, passing through the ti of Martin and hooking up through Margaret on the line above; at whole-page scale that stroke turns tin into something readable as bla. The same stroke is why this block previously hyphenated "Barbaty-Margaret" — the page prints no hyphen, the pen crosses the gap. ⇒ Brode agrees with Littell ([I.4] p. 90, "Hannah Martin, widow of Colonel Ephraim Martin"); there was never a spelling discrepancy between them. The consequences for [p.281] are worked out there, not here.

Verbatim — "Miss Conover" vs Hankinson correction (book page 77, image seq_81)

For 40 years the record of the marriage of a Miss
Conover and Daniel Cooper Jr. has been in our family.
It was obtained from Arthur E. Cooper, who published
The Cooper Family Tree in 1895. It is also given in
Littell. Since I have completed these sketches there
has come to me a different record which Mr. Cooper
wrote for the N. J. Historical Society in 1898. As it
is a later contribution, it must have been considered
the authentic record though no references were given.
The statement follows: John Ludlow married first,
Catherine Cooper, only child of Daniel Cooper and his
first wife, Catherine Hankinson. If this statement is
correct there is no Conover connection.

Verbatim — Hankinson family research (book page 78, image seq_82)

Later—A search of the N. J. Archives shows the
following:
Marriage Licenses (Vol. xxii)
Cooper, Daniel Jr., (Morris Co.) and Catherine
Hankinson, Freehold, 4-3-1751. This surely establish-
es our connection with the Hankinson Family.
A note in the New Jersey Archives mentions a
Thomas Hankinson, "arrested in 1700 for rioting
against the crown." He might have been the father of
Catherine. Others of the name who are mentioned in
the Abstracts of Wills of that time are John, Daniel,
Joseph, and William, all of Freehold, where Catherine
lived.
A continued reading in the abstracts brings the
following: List of persons imported for account of
Stephen and Thomas Warne Indentured for three
years—4 years— for the Custom of the country. Jane
Hankinson and her children, Thomas, Peter and Rich-
ard. All came into the province about March 31, 1683-4.
Deed, Thomas and Richard Hankinson of Capt.
John Boune of Monmouth Co. for 120 acres, the
headland, to their mother Jean Hankinson and
brother, Peter, both deceased.
This probably is our family. Men of the name are
mentioned frequently in the affairs of the community,
Freehold.

Col. Cornelius Ludlow made his home at Long Hill,
New Jersey. He was a soldier of the Revolution, serv-
ing until wounded at the Battle of Germantown. He
died in 1812, Long Hill, N. J. He is buried in New Pro-
vidence Pres. ch. g.y. Every reference to the birth of
Cornelius Ludlow, both in print and in manuscript,
gives his birth place as New Providence, New Jersey.
Most of these same statements say that his father came
there in 1737. I think that the latter statement is true
and that Cornelius was born on Long Island for the
[continues onto p.69:]
date of his birth is 1728, nine years before his father
moved to New Jersey.

Cornelius Ludlow was a member of the Eastern
Battalion of New Jersey troops raised Jan. 13, 1776.
He took part in the battle of Long Island as Major
in Gen. Heard's Brigade. He was Lieut. Col. of the
Eastern Battalion when it was detailed to cover Wash-
ington's retreat, across New Jersey after the evacua-
tion of New York. He served at Trenton, Princeton,
and Springfield. He was wounded at Germantown,

The Berkeley Tracts were inside the Elizabeth-
town Purchase and it was this purchase of Daniel
Cooper that was the cause of litigation that dragged
out over many years.

Daniel Cooper was Justice and Judge of the Quo-
rum for more than forty years. The first recorded
nomination was in September, 1739. The last nomi-
nation was made April 2, 1768. The New Jersey Arch-
ives says "He was justice and judge for over 40
years." The sources of information are given in a
copy of the D. A. R. accepted paper which follows.

He died May 2, 1795, just one day over a century
old.

Verbatim — Adjutant General reply on Daniel Cooper RevWar service (book pages 78-79, image seq_82 + seq_83)

Copy of Revolutionary Service of Daniel Cooper Jr.

       STATE OF NEW JERSEY
   OFFICE OF THE ADJUTANT GENERAL
                TRENTON
                                          May 9, 1932.
Mrs. H. S. Brode,
Walla Walla, Wash.

Dear Madam: In reply to your communication of
May 4th, I wish to advise that the records of this
office show the following:

Daniel Cooper—served as Commissioner for the
classing of the Militia in Morris County, 1778—during
the Revolutionary War.
                       (Signed) FREDERICK GILKYSON,
                          The Adjutant General.

During the terrible winter of 1780 Washington
was compelled to resort to forced requisitions on the
New Jersey Counties. During the period from the 20th
of January to the 1st of June 1780, the New Jersey
Records, according to the Adjutant General, show that
Daniel Cooper assisted in the "impressing of teams,
in carting and sledding," etc. In that time five certifi-
cates were issued to him.

Some of the certificates are issued to Daniel
Cooper and some to Daniel Cooper Jr., but they no
doubt all refer to the same man, Daniel Jr.

The "no doubt all refer to the same man, Daniel Jr." is Brode's interpretive guess; the original NJ records distinguished the names and catalog should preserve both attestations separately.

Verbatim — Vincent Rognion Huguenot origin (book pages 71-73, images seq_75 + seq_76 + seq_77)

                THE RUNYON FAMILY

Vincent Rognion b. in Poitou, France, m. Ann
Boutcher, July 17, 1668. Their children are:
1. Vincent Runyon b. 1670, m. Mary Hill, 1691.
   Their children are:
   1. Sarah, 2. Martha, 3. Rezior, 4. Mary, 5.
   Anna, 6. Vincent, 7. Reuben, 8. Reune.
2. Peter b. 1680, m. 1704, Providence Blackford.
   Their children are:
   1. John, 2. Joseph, 3. Peter, 4. Richard, 5. Ben-
   jamin, 6. Grace, 7. Rosannah, 8. Providence,
   9. Sarah.
Grace, dau. of Peter b. Jan. 7, 1707, d. Nov.
   1755, m. April 17, 1726, Daniel Cooper, Sr. b.
   1695, d. May 2, 1795.

One ancestor that stands apart from all the other
original emigrants is Vincent Rognion. He was a
Frenchman from the province of Poitou, a Huguenot,
who fled from his native land to escape religious per-
secution. I had, as a girl, been fascinated by tales of
the heroism and fidelity of the French Protestants of
his day and when I found that I had a real ancestor
of that faith, he seemed very much alive to me even if
he had been dead more than 200 years.

[Hatfield's "History of Elizabeth" note re Vincent at p.72:]
"Vincent Runyon (Rognion, Ronyon) was a car-
penter, and tradition says, of French origin. He prob-
ably came over from Jersey in a second or third im-
portation of laborers by the governor. He bought,
March 20, 1671-2 of Francis Barber, Thomas Moore's
original house-lot. He was a witness for the prose-
cution and so lost caste with the town; on which ac-
count he removed, not later than 1677 to Piscataway,
where he had 154 acres of land allotted to him,
March 1677-8. He died Nov. 1713."

BOUTCHER ANCESTRY
The only record we find of our connection with the
Boutcher family is the notice of the marriage of Ann
Boutcher, daughter of John Boutcher of Hartford,
England to Vincent Rognion, July 17, 1668. The license
was granted by Governor Carteret, in June.

BLACKFORD ANCESTRY
Providence Blackford married Peter Runyon is
the only reference found.

Catalog significance: this opens 4 NEW maternal-grandparent + great-grandparent identifications for p.148 Grace Runyon Cooper: - Peter Runyon + Providence Blackford (parents) - Vincent Rognion + Ann Boutcher (grandparents) - John Boutcher of Hartford England (great-grandfather)

Each warrants a new p.N stub. Vincent's Huguenot-Poitou-France origin via Isle of Jersey to NJ 1671 + carpenter trade is a substantive new line.

    Four died in infancy.

This page independently enumerates Lydia's children with exact dates — corroborating the p.882 Lydia (Ludlow) Ross child roster and, in particular, clearing the two "L.4-only" flags: #7 Harriet (Ross) Andrew [p.1003] (b. 19 Apr 1818, d. 1917, m. William P. Andrew 1861 — see [G.292]/[C.53]/[F.209]) and #10 Lydia Ross [p.1006] (× Cyrus Moore Warren 1849) are both here. "Four died in infancy" accounts for the remainder of I.131's count of 10 surviving + infant deaths.
