The Coopers of Long Hill

Document K.18 · Land Records and Deeds · transcription: verbatim

NJSA Early Land Records — Daniel Cooper Jr (Deputy Surveyor) 14 April 1762 survey on branches of Dead River, Somerset Co. — 76.18 acres for Joseph Kinnan + John Williams + John Longstreet (good-right and pine-right combined), at the request of Joseph Kinnan. Survey personally signed by 'Stirling' = William Alexander, Lord Stirling, Surveyor General = primary-source-confirms Daniel Jr was already working under Lord Stirling by April 1762 — 2 years earlier than the K.6/K.8 Morris Co. Cooper-Stirling Long Hill attestations, 11 years before the 1773 Cooper-Stirling letter (pr.52). Adjoins Ephraim Dunham's prior tract (book S page 88). Underlying right traces to Mary Alexander's 9 February 1760 deed to grantees (1400 ac of her 6000-ac warrant of 29 November 1757, Lib W4.13), and to Thomas Kinnan's certificate of 3 August 1751 for 109.81 ac pine land (Lib S3.216), assigned to Joseph Kinnan via Lib AB3.298. Same Joseph Kinnan / Thomas Kinnan family that recurs in [K.16 Record 7](K.16.yaml) (Ruth Kinnan 1773 Bernards Town deed signed by Daniel Sr as Morris CCP Judge). Companion to [K.13](K.13.yaml) (Daniel Jr 2 Mar 1758 Dead River survey for John Harrison heirs) — both records establish Daniel Jr's Dead River / Middlesex–Somerset borderland surveying footprint.

Genl"

Catalog significance — three major findings

(1) Lord Stirling (William Alexander) personally signed this survey

The signatory line on the manuscript is the single word "Stirling" — = William Alexander's customary signature once he was using the Stirling title. = primary-source-locks Lord Stirling as Surveyor General of EJ Proprietors by 14 April 1762.

Catalog impact: - Daniel Cooper Jr was working under Lord Stirling in Somerset Co. by 14 April 1762. Previous catalog K.6 + K.8 Morris Co. Daniel Jr-Stirling attestations dated 1764+; this record pushes the Cooper-Stirling Surveyor-General relationship back at least 2 years earlier. - = 11 years before the 1773 Cooper-Stirling letter (pr.52 Cooper-Stirling 1773 letter acquisition), establishing the working partnership long predates the political-correspondence relationship. - Combined with pr.27 Cooper-Stirling network, the Cooper-Stirling network now has primary-source-attested origin at least to early 1760s.

(2) Same Kinnan family that recurs in K.16 Record 7 (1773 Bernards Town deed signed by Daniel Sr as Morris CCP Judge)

The Joseph Kinnan + Thomas Kinnan named in this 1762 survey = same Kinnan family appearing in: - 1751 — Thomas Kinnan certificate for 109.81 ac pine, recorded Lib S3.216 (= father's underlying right) - 1762 (this record) — Joseph Kinnan as commissioning grantee, asserting his title via the Thomas → Joseph assignment Lib AB3.298 - 1773 (K.16 Record 7) — Ruth Kinnan (widow of Joseph Kinnan deceased) → John + Joseph Kinnan (sons) 15 ac Bernards Town deed, signed by Daniel Cooper, Judge of Inferior CCP Morris Co. Signatory 25 March 1774 — = Daniel Sr signing off on Joseph Kinnan's widow's transfer to his sons, 11 years after Daniel Jr surveyed Joseph's Dead River land - 1770-1772 (K.11 Records 4-8) — Daniel Jr + David Cooper Jr as former-owners of Kinnan-estate Middlesex Co. land

Catalog significance: the Cooper-Kinnan working relationship spans 22+ years (1762-1785) and Multiple counties (Somerset + Middlesex + Morris) AND multiple Cooper-family members (Daniel Sr judicial + Daniel Jr surveying + David Cooper Jr land-holding). Suggests Cooper-Kinnan was a notable cross-generational working/landholding relationship, not isolated transactions.

(3) Geographic continuity: Dead River = same corridor as K.13 Daniel Jr 1758 survey

This 1762 survey is on "branches of dead river" Somerset Co. — = same Dead River corridor where Daniel Jr surveyed for John Harrison heirs / Phineas Cox 2 March 1758 (K.13). The two surveys establish: - 1758 — Daniel Jr surveying for Phineas Cox / John Pound heirs at Dead River (Middlesex Co. side per K.13 — the Middlesex-Somerset borderland) - 1762 — Daniel Jr surveying for Kinnan / Williams / Longstreet at Dead River (Somerset Co. side, this record) - = Daniel Jr's 4-year continuous Dead River surveying footprint, working both county sides of the borderland.

Note Dead River is the modern Passaic River tributary; flows through what was the historical Long Hill / Pluckemin / Basking Ridge corridor that Daniel Sr's family lived along. = primary-source-locks Daniel Jr's professional presence in the same geographic area where Daniel Sr was a landowner, witness, and Judge.
