NYG&B Record Vol 40 (1909) — Earliest Baptismal Records of the Church of HARLINGEN (Reformed Dutch) of New Jersey 1727-1734 by William Jones Skillman — CONGREGATION PRIMARY-SOURCE-IDENTIFIED v190 2026-05-06 as HARLINGEN NJ Reformed Dutch Church (= aka Sourland; aka 'op de Millstone' before 1766; same area as Skillman ancestral home). TWO Daniel Cooper × Lucresia Runyon children baptized at Harlingen 1729-1733: (1) Daniel Jr baptized 26 March 1729 (= Daniel Cooper Jr 1729-1787; wits Henry Smock & Ann Van Duyn); (2) CORRECTED 2026-07-11 — the "Anna Cooper baptized ~Oct 1733" is a PHANTOM (= Agnietje 1732 [p.516], not a new daughter). Reading the actual Vol 40 page (PDF p.322 = printed p.289) shows Skillman's entry is "Aug. 16. Anna, dau. Daniel Cooper & Lucresia Runyon" under the year header 1732 — i.e. the SAME 16 Aug 1732 baptism the register image + GMNJ render as Agnietje ([F.176]/[F.222], image-verified "Daniel Cuper / Creesje Reijnjen"). Skillman rendered "Agnietje"→"Anna" (he wrote "Anna" for all three consecutive Aug-16 girls); the v190 "~Oct 1733" date was a mis-read of the page location. ⇒ NOT a separate child; collapses into [p.516]. Daniel Sr × Grace have exactly TWO Harlingen baptisms (Daniel Jr 1729 + Agnietje 1732). Plus 'Sept. 11, 1728. Lucresia Runyon, wife of Daniel Cooper; received by Confession of Faith & baptized the same day' = primary-source 1728 Confession-of-Faith. Lucresia Runyon = Grace Runyon: per Vol 40 editorial note 'the latter being of the same household as Peter Runyon, the editor's paternal great-grandfather' — confirmed by [M.16](M.16.yaml) Vol 38 p. 108 published Skillman-family genealogy = Grace Runyon b. 17 Jan 1706/7 daughter of Peter Runyon b. 1 July 1680 of Piscataway. Latin/church-name 'Lucresia' for English/familial 'Grace'. v190 nuance: Vol 40's series transcribes the anti-Frelinghuysen / Conferentie party register of Harlingen 1727-1734; a separate Frelinghuysen-coetus-party register exists at Holland Society Library per Vol 41 editor's note; latter may have additional Daniel Sr × Grace baptism entries not yet seen.
Transcription and notes
[high certainty for the published-abstract content; medium certainty for which physical RDC congregation this represents (most likely Six Mile Run, New Brunswick, or another central-NJ RDC — NOT Raritan per F.67 cross-check); HIGH SIGNIFICANCE for the 'Lucresia' vs 'Grace' Runyon name-variant question]

| Pastor 1729+ | Domine Theodorus Jacobus Frelinghuysen — = the famous Dutch Pietist pastor who served Six-Mile Run + Three-Mile Run + Raritan + Sourland/Harlingen + North Branch concurrently. Took full charge at Harlingen 1729 but baptized no children at the start due to factional disputes. |
| Faction nuance (v190) | The Vol 40 abstract is the Anti-Frelinghuysen / Conferentie party Harlingen register 1727-1734. A SEPARATE Frelinghuysen-Coetus-party register also exists for the same period at the Holland Society Library per Vol 41 (1910) editor's note: "The two original records of the Church of Harlingen, N. J., described in Editor's Note in July issue of this magazine, are now in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society's Library, a manuscript copy of the unprinted original having been made for the Library by Mr. Versteeg, through the courtesy of the Holland Society." The unprinted register may contain additional Daniel Sr × Grace baptisms not in this Vol 40 abstract. |

The Daniel Cooper × Lucresia Runyon entries (verbatim, isolated)
11 September 1728:
Lucresia Runyon, wife of Daniel Cooper; received by Confession of Faith & baptized the same day (the latter being of the same household as Peter Runyon, the editor's paternal great-grandfather.)
26 March 1729:
Daniel, son Daniel Cooper & Lucresia Runyon; wits: Henry Smock & Ann Van Duyn.
16 August 1732 (Vol 40 printed p. 289 / PDF p.322 — added + image-read 2026-07-11; under the "1732." year header):
Aug. 16. Anna, dau. Daniel Cooper & Lucresia Runyon. Anna, dau. Jacob Gray & Anne Aertson. Anna, dau. Alexander Fitsert & Mannetche Slover.
This "Anna" = [p.516 Agnietje] — Skillman rendered the register's Agnietje as "Anna" (and standardized all three consecutive Aug-16 girls to "Anna"; the register/GMNJ give Agnietje / Annetje / Anna). Same date, same parents, same following cohort as the F.176/F.222 register version. ⇒ the long-standing "Anna baptized ~Oct 1733" was a mis-name + mis-date of THIS 16 Aug 1732 baptism. No separate Anna child.
Implications — the "Lucresia vs Grace" Runyon-name discrepancy
The catalog (per I.36 House of Cooper Cooper Line p. 7 + p. 11 + project pr.1 Daniel Cooper Sr dates.md) records Daniel Cooper Sr's first wife as Grace Runyon, married 17 April 1726 Piscataway NJ.
The NYG&B Vol 40 p. 285 primary-source register (= a transcription of an actual Reformed Dutch Church baptismal register) names her Lucresia Runyon.
Three readings:
Reading 1 (most parsimonious): "Grace" = "Lucresia" via name-variant convention
In Dutch Reformed colonial records, formal Latin/Latin-derived names were often used for church-register entries while English/familial nicknames were used in family records. Lucretia (Latin / Roman virtue name; Latinized as "Lucresia" in Dutch) does NOT directly translate to "Grace," but:
- "Lucretia" can carry a connotation of moral excellence / favor / blessing → conceptually paralleling "Grace"
- Or "Grace" was the woman's confirmation name added at her 1728 Confession of Faith (per the abstract: "received by Confession of Faith & baptized the same day"), with the church register recording her birth-name "Lucresia" rather than her later confirmed name
- Or these are alternate spellings of one Latin-tradition name (e.g., the Dutch Lukrezia might equal the English Grace by translation convention rather than transliteration)
The 30-week-pregnancy timing of the 1728 Confession of Faith in September followed by the baby Daniel born ~14 January 1729 strongly suggests "Lucresia" took her Confession of Faith mid-pregnancy with Daniel Jr — consistent with Daniel Sr's first wife adopting full Reformed Dutch Church membership before her son's birth. The household reference to Peter Runyon further supports that this Lucresia is from the Runyon family (= the same family Grace Runyon was from).
Reading 2: Two wives in close succession
Daniel Sr could have had Grace as a first wife who died 1726-1728, then Lucresia (also a Runyon, possibly Grace's sister or cousin) as second wife by 1728. This would mean House of Cooper I.36 recorded only the first wife. Less parsimonious — no other source mentions two early-marriage Runyon wives.
Reading 3: Two distinct Daniel Coopers
There could have been two contemporaneous Daniel Coopers in central NJ — one married Grace Runyon (= Daniel Sr per I.36), the other married Lucresia Runyon (= a different Daniel Cooper). The same-Runyon-family signal (= Lucresia and Grace would be close kin) makes this less likely than Reading 1, but possible.
Recommended catalog action
Do NOT yet override the existing I.36 "Grace Runyon" attestation. Treat Reading 1 (Grace = Lucresia) as the most-likely working hypothesis pending:
- Cross-check with other Reformed Dutch baptism registers for additional Daniel Cooper × wife entries — to see if any uses "Grace" form (which would confirm Reading 1) or another name (which would shift to Reading 2).
- Pull Bonham I.35 p. 584 detail on Daniel Jr's birth + parents (already have b. 14 Jan 1729 from memory; full Bonham text would clarify if Bonham names the mother as Grace, Lucresia, or both).
- Identify the source congregation of NYG&B Vol 40 p. 285 — would tell us where Daniel Sr was attending church 1728-1729, which is a separate catalog datum.
2026-05-28 v229+ update — F.176 Ancestry 6961 cross-corroboration + "Creesje" mother-name + Agnes 1732 baptism
F.176 Ancestry collection 6961 Cooper-name Harlingen Somerset NJ baptism sweep (= Dutch Reformed Church Records in Selected States 1639-1989) independently indexes the 26 March 1729 Daniel Jr baptism with mother's name shown as "Creesje" (= Dutch diminutive of Lucresje = Lucretia / Lucresia).
IMAGE-VERIFIED 2026-05-28 same day via register-page JPEGs at Church/Dutch Reformed/Milston (Harlington) NJ/:
- Page 8 (Daniel Jr 1729): parents row reads "Daniel Kuyper / Creesje Reijnjen"; witnesses Hendrik Smock / Antje Van Duyn (Dutch forms of M.15-Skillman's "Henry Smock / Ann Van Duyn")
- Page 17 (Agnietje 1732): parents row reads "Daniel Cuper / Creesje Reijnjen" (identical mother-spelling 3 years later); no witnesses listed
- "Reijnjen" = phonetic-Dutch rendering of Runyon (= the Huguenot surname Rognion per [p.274 Vincent Rognion]). Definitively confirms Daniel Sr's wife = the [p.148 Grace Runyon Cooper] of all family records.
3-form name chain now established for Daniel Sr's first wife: - Lucresia / Lucresje (Dutch full / Latinate) — this M.15 1728 Confession-of-Faith record - Creesje (Dutch diminutive) — F.176 1729 Daniel Jr baptism index row - Grace (English / family) — I.36 House of Cooper + I.4 Littell + L.13y Cooper Family Record
Strong support for M.15 Reading 1: single woman with Dutch Reformed church name (Lucresia/Creesje) + English family name (Grace). Catalog should now treat them as one woman = p.148 Grace Runyon Cooper.
F.176's "Agnietje 1732" = Skillman's "Anna, Aug. 16 1732" = the SAME baptism (one child, [p.516]). Earlier catalog text claimed Agnietje was NOT in Skillman's abstract and that Skillman had a separate "Anna 1733" — both wrong (corrected 2026-07-11). Reading Vol 40 printed p.289 (PDF p.322): under the 1732 year header, "Aug. 16. Anna, dau. Daniel Cooper & Lucresia Runyon" is Skillman's rendering of the register's Agnietje (image-verified "Daniel Cuper / Creesje Reijnjen," no witnesses). Skillman standardized the three consecutive Aug-16 girls' names all to "Anna" (register: Agnietje / Annetje / Anna). ⇒ Skillman + F.176 record the SAME child, not two.
Net (corrected): Daniel Sr × Grace have exactly TWO primary-source Harlingen baptisms — Daniel Jr (26 Mar 1729) + Agnietje (16 Aug 1732, [p.516]). There is no "Anna 1733" and no child-count increase from this source. (The [L.13y] 9-child roster stands; the phantom "Anna 1733" that had been used to argue "11 children" is retracted.)

What this entry adds to the broader research
- NEW catalog datum: Daniel Cooper Sr was attending a NJ Reformed Dutch congregation OTHER THAN Raritan in 1728-1729. Identifying that congregation is itself a new research lead.
- Daniel Cooper Jr's primary-source baptism record now in catalog — was previously only via Bonham secondary source.
- Lucresia/Grace Runyon name-variant question opened — cataloged but not resolved.
- Witnesses Henry Smock + Ann Van Duyn as new social-network data points for Daniel Sr's 1729 NJ circle.
Open follow-ups
- Identify the source congregation of NYG&B Vol 40 (1909) "Reformed Dutch of New Jersey 1727-1734" series. Most likely candidates per Reformed Dutch Churches DOCX register (image held in the family archive): Six Mile Run RDC, New Brunswick RDC (= "First Reformed Church, New Brunswick"), Three Mile Run RDC, or possibly another. The DOCX lists Six Mile Run baptisms 1743-1849 but the user's note says "Most NJ congregations also covered." Check Vol 40's series introduction or other NYG&B Record vol indexes.
- Check NYG&B Record Vol 40 immediately preceding + following pages for additional Daniel Cooper × Lucresia Runyon entries (other children's baptisms, perhaps daughters in 1731 / 1733).
- Cross-check Bonham I.35 p. 584 for whether Bonham names Daniel Jr's mother as Grace or Lucresia (would resolve Reading 1 vs Reading 2 vs Reading 3).
- Locate "Peter Runyon, the editor's paternal great-grandfather" mentioned in the abstract — would identify the abstract-series editor (= NYG&B Vol 40 editor) and place him as a Runyon descendant. Per online genealogies of the Runyon family, this could be tied to Peter Runyon Jr (1693-1773) of Piscataway, son of Vincent Runyon (the original Piscataway Runyon settler).
- Check whether NYG&B Vol 40 p. 285 series includes the 1726 Daniel Cooper × Lucresia/Grace Runyon marriage record (per House of Cooper they were married 17 April 1726 Piscataway NJ; their marriage register entry should be in the 1726 section of the same series).
