Verbatim — obituary text
Octagenarian Joins Silent Majority
Louis S. Cooper, aged 80 years, 5 months and 5 days, died on Saturday last at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. E. Gingrich. Mr. Cooper had been an invalid for many years and for the past forty was almost totally blind.
Death must have come as a welcome relief to his sufferings, which in his aged condition told doubly.
The funeral took place Sunday in the Santa Maria cemetery and was attended by many sorrowing friends. Rev. Powers conducted the funeral service.

= 3 independent primary-source attestations of Lewis Sanford Cooper's death now in catalog (F.117 state index + G.133 Find A Grave + this J.130 newspaper obit). The newspaper obit is the highest-certainty of the three (= published 1 week after death in town where he died).
Birth date refinement
Working backwards from 29 Jul 1905 (Saturday) minus 80 years 5 months 5 days:
- 80 years before 29 Jul 1905 = 29 Jul 1825
- minus 5 months = 29 Feb 1825 (= invalid date in non-leap year; 1825 not leap)
- closer: 80 years + 5 months 5 days back = ~24 Feb 1825
Catalog reading: birth ~24 Feb 1825 vs G.133 Find A Grave 26 Feb 1825. 2-day discrepancy within tolerance for stone vs newspaper.
Possibility: stone might round to a memorable date (26 Feb = Washington's old-style birthday); obit might miscalculate by a couple days. Or birth could genuinely be either 24 Feb or 26 Feb 1825. Catalog records ~24-26 Feb 1825 with primary-source attestations preferring 26 Feb per Find A Grave.
Lifelong blindness — biographical datum
Per obit verbatim: "for the past forty [years] was almost totally blind" = Lewis blind from ~1865 onward (age ~40).
This explains catalog observations:
- 1850 D.266 — age 23, Laborer (sighted, working)
- 1875 E.5 — age 49, Farmer ($170 RE) — already blind 10 years; supported by adult sons working farm
- 1880 D.267 — age 54, Farmer — blind 15 years
- 1885 E.6 — age 60, Canvasser = door-to-door salesman / traveling agent. POSSIBLE re-interpretation: 'Canvasser' may have meant a religious/political/charitable canvasser job that didn't require sight, OR was a courtesy listing where someone helped him "work" despite blindness
- 1905 — age 80, died at daughter's home as invalid
= NEW datum strongly affecting interpretation of all post-1865 census occupation entries.
Sarah Eliza Cooper Gingrich (p.44) PRIMARY-SOURCE-CONFIRMED
G.133 Find A Grave-tier identified Sarah Eliza Cooper Gingrich 1855-1920 as Lewis's daughter. This J.130 obit primary-source-confirms at newspaper grade: - Married surname Gingrich - Daughter relationship to Lewis - Residence Santa Maria CA in 1905 - Caregiver role for father in his final years
Sarah Eliza's husband initials per obit "Mrs. S. E. Gingrich": ambiguous. Either: - "S. E." = husband's first + middle initials, then Gingrich (e.g., Samuel E. Gingrich) - OR "S. E." = Sarah Eliza's own initials, with "Mrs." prefix indicating married Gingrich
19th-c. American newspaper convention: a married woman is typically named as "Mrs. [husband's first initial(s)]. [husband's surname]". So "Mrs. S. E. Gingrich" most likely = Mrs. S.E. Gingrich where S.E. are HUSBAND's first+middle initials. Sarah Eliza's husband would be named "S.E. Gingrich" — possibly Samuel E., Stephen E., Sylvester E., etc.
= NEW research target: identify Sarah Eliza's husband (S.E. Gingrich) of Santa Maria CA c. 1880s-1905+.
Hop 3→2 status unchanged (still strong probable)
Obit does NOT name Lewis's parents. Hop 3→2 (Lewis Sanford → Joseph 1785) confidence remains strong probable post-G.133 + J.130. CA Death Certificate State File #3137 (= F.117) remains the primary-source target to close hop at certain.
Open questions / follow-up
- Order CA Death Certificate State File #3137 (Lewis Sanford Cooper) — still TOP-PRIORITY action; obit doesn't close hop 3→2 but certificate will
- Identify Sarah Eliza Cooper Gingrich's husband 'S.E. Gingrich' — search 1900 Santa Barbara Co. CA census for S.E. Gingrich + Sarah Cooper Gingrich household; cross-reference 1875 Reno Co. KS E.5 Gingrich-adjacent household (JR Gingrich 25 + S Gingrich 58 + others — none match 'S.E.' exactly)
- Sarah Eliza migration KS→CA window — between 1875 E.5 (in KS with parents) and pre-1905 (in CA caring for father); narrow via 1880 + 1900 censuses
- Rev. Powers identification — Santa Maria 1905 clergy directory + Santa Barbara Co. denominational records; minor target
- Source of Lewis's blindness ~1865 (age 40) — possibly accident OR disease (cataracts, glaucoma, syphilitic-blindness common in era); medical history not knowable from primary sources alone but obit attests onset year ~1865
- Search for additional Santa Maria Times Cooper obituaries — for Sarah Eliza Cooper Gingrich d. 1920 + other Cooper-line family members in Santa Maria area
- 1900 Santa Barbara Co. CA census — likely Lewis Sanford + Sarah Eliza Gingrich household; would primary-source-attest pre-death residence + relationships
