DIED.

On Sunday, 20th instant, of Asthma, STEPHEN COOPER, aged 67 years and 10 months.

(Following entries on the same DIED column: "At his residence near May's Landing, Atlantic Co., on the 10th inst., JOHN ESTELL, Esq. some years a member of the Legislature..." — NOT relevant to Cooper research.)

What this source establishes

Death-age 67 years 10 months = primary-source-corroborates Bible birth-month December 1771

Per B.57 Side A page 1: "Stephen R. Cooper was Born [?] December 1771" (day-of-month illegible in current Bible scan).

Per J.149: Stephen Cooper "aged 67 years and 10 months" at death 20 Oct 1839.

Calendar back-calculation: 20 October 1839 minus 67 years 10 months = ~20 December 1771.

This is an EXACT MATCH with Bible-tier "December 1771" — primary-source-CORROBORATES Bible at month-level. The illegible day-of-month in Bible likely = ~20 December 1771. (Possibly Bible reads "20 December 1771" with the "20" obscured.)

Cause of death = Asthma (NEW catalog datum)

Newspaper specifies "of Asthma" — this is a NEW catalog data point. Asthma in 1839 medicine = chronic respiratory illness; could be exacerbated by Newark's air quality during industrial expansion period.

Death day-of-month: 20 October 1839 (Sunday)

Calendar verification: 20 October 1839 was indeed a Sunday. The newspaper's "On Sunday, 20th instant" is correct.

Resolution of Bible vs Ancestry day-of-month discrepancy: - Bible-tier: "Oct 25th" per B.57 (year illegible) - Ancestry NJ Deaths Index: "20 Oct 1839" per D.310 - Newspaper next-day: "Sunday, 20th instant" = Sunday 20 Oct 1839 per J.149

Two primary sources (newspaper + NJ Deaths Index citing newspaper) agree on 20 October 1839. Bible's "Oct 25" reading was a mis-transcription on my part (or possibly a later commemoration date). PRIMARY-SOURCE-RESOLVES death date at 20 October 1839 Sunday.

Newark Daily Advertiser was a Newark newspaper

The Newark Daily Advertiser was the main Newark NJ newspaper of this period. The fact that Stephen Cooper's death notice appeared there confirms his Newark residence at time of death — corroborates A.69 estate file's Newark-residence + D.310 tree's Newark-burial.

The newspaper notice does NOT name his survivors or wife. Brief notice = typical 1839 newspaper death column style (= name + age + cause + date). For longer obituary content, look at follow-up issues 22-31 Oct 1839 OR look at Newark First Presbyterian Church session minutes.
