What this document records
The item verbatim
"Joseph Cooper, died at the home of his son Ed. Cooper, with what is supposed to be heart failure very suddenly, Tuesday afternoon. He had just come in from the country, where he had been to visit some of his relatives. A more extended notice next week."
⚠️ which tuesday
Page 1 of this issue reads "STAFFORD, KANSAS, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1893 … VOLUME 8 … NUMBER 28". Page 8's inside masthead, above the local column, reads "Stafford, Kansas, Oct. 19, 1893." Newspapers.com files the page under 26 October. ⇒ The "Tuesday" is 24 October if page 8 belongs to the 26 October issue, or 17 October if its masthead is current. Evidence on the pages themselves (2026-09-18): (1) the 2 November 1893 issue's local page carries the same inside masthead "Stafford, Kansas, Oct. 19, 1893" — so that head was not reset weekly; (2) this same page 8 reports that "Able Bond Sr. died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. Cope, in Union township Sunday night, and was buried at Pleasant Valley cemetery Tuesday. An orbitary notice will appear next week"; and the 2 Nov obituary gives his death as "Oct. 22, 1893". ⇒ page 8 was set after Sunday 22 October, and the Tuesday of Joseph's notice is 24 October 1893.
The extended notice not found
The "more extended notice next week" was NOT found (2026-09-18). Newspapers.com text searches of Stafford County papers, 17 Oct – 9 Nov 1893, for Cooper, "Joseph Cooper", deceased and funeral: every hit read and none is it (the 2 Nov issue's Cooper matches are "J. Fenimore Cooper" in a book advert, p. 1, and "Ed. Cooper, Pro." of a Meat Market advert, p. 2). 1893 OCR is patchy. 2 Nov 1893, page 4 (the local page) READ BY EYE, all columns: no Joseph Cooper notice — filed as (archive file). 9 Nov 1893, page 4 (the local page) READ BY EYE, both local columns: no Joseph Cooper notice — it carries the promised "Obituary next week" pattern for another death (Mrs. Hattie Logan), but nothing for Cooper. Filed as (archive file). 16 Nov and 23 Nov 1893, page 4, likewise read by eye, every local column: no Cooper notice (filed as (archive file) and (archive file)). OCR 'Cooper' hits 10 Nov – 31 Dec in the Republican are all Ed. Cooper's meat-market advert. ⇒ The promised notice was apparently never printed in the Republican (the other pages of both issues were covered only by the OCR searches, which found nothing). Newspapers.com's Stafford County location filter, 17 Oct – 31 Dec 1893, returns only the Republican and the St. John papers — the other Stafford titles are not online for these weeks.
