Document L.143 · Family Trees · transcription: verbatim
Brian S. Carpenter — 'Elias Van Court Sr and Family' (41-pp research compilation; Research/Elias Van Court Sr and Family.pdf). The most substantial Anne-(Cooper)-Van-Court research document on disk — previously a 'ghost source' (cited in 6 entries for only the 14-children count + 1779 death). Now mined: a brother-in-law/sibling-degree logic-tree, a low-grade candidate father 'William Cooper,' and a documented ship-list immigration NULL. [research-tier]
Transcription and notes
A private genealogical compilation by Brian S. Carpenter ((image held in the family archive), 41 pp). Cited across the catalog (L.39/L.41/L.43/I.30/A.12/G.68) for the 14-children list + 1779 death date, but its deeper Anne-Cooper research had never been extracted. Surfaced + mined in the 2026-06-20 Van Court audit. Research-tier — secondary compilation citing other researchers; weigh accordingly.
The findings that bear on open questions
- Sibling-degree logic-tree (p.23) — directly relevant to the full-vs-half question. Carpenter lays out that Elias's will phrase "my brother in Law Daniel Cooper" is ambiguous: it could mean (a) Elias's wife's brother (= Anne's brother — the common assumption), (b) Elias's sister's husband, or (c) a step / "by-law" relationship (per Renee Dauven's reading). He lists three candidate Daniels: Daniel Jr (1729–87), Daniel Sr (1695–1795), and "the 'other' Daniel Cooper (b. 1704–1715)." ⇒ documents, in detail, the same full-vs-half / which-Daniel ambiguity that p.3 flags as open. Resolves nothing, but it is the fullest articulation of the problem on disk.
- Candidate father "William Cooper" (p.39) — LOW grade. Per "research by Lou" (2008): "The next year he married Anne Cooper, daughter of William Cooper." Unsourced, and Carpenter himself flags it as a likely two-Daniels conflation ("either both Daniels had a father named William, or Lou has mixed up the two Daniel Coopers"). The "William Cooper" here aligns with the Camden/Quaker William Cooper (fam.3) confound, not a primary attestation for our Daniel Sr. Recorded as a named lead only.
- Immigration ship-list NULL (pp.3–4). Exhaustive ISTG (vols 1–20) + Coldham/Filby/Tepper/Olive-Tree sweep for a Cooper or Van Court arrival ~1690–1695 = essentially nothing — corroborates pr.2's "ship-null" calibration with specifics. Side-hits (both fam.3 noise): "1686 America, Ann Cooper, 21" (Tepper); "1680 West New Jersey — William Cooper + child Daniel + wife Margaret" (Coldham) = the Camden William.
- Priaulx verbatim (p.2). Amanda Bennett (Priaulx Library, Guernsey) on Anne: "There is no record whatsoever that she, or her brother, ever had any contact with the island… My best guess… she was a first or second generation immigrant from England." (Cleaner verbatim of the L.39 summary.)
- Stray namesake (p.38): Norris genealogy "refers to Mary Cooper, daughter of John Cooper and Anne Clarke" — unplaced; possible namesake noise (not in catalog).
Bottom line
No primary parentage, no "B" explanation, no Coriell–Van Court tie beyond [I.44]/[fam.15]. Value = (1) the best on-disk statement of the sibling-degree ambiguity, (2) a named-but-weak "William Cooper" father lead (fam.3-flavored), (3) a specific immigration-null. All consonant with pr.2/p.3; none advances them to a new tier.
