The Coopers of Long Hill

Document M.49 · Societies & Lineage · transcription: verbatim

DAR Genealogical Research System — Ancestor A002840, Lt. SAMUEL ANNIN (1753–1837) of Somerset Co. NJ, m. LYDIA COOPER. RESOLVES the Annin-branch root: approved DAR applications descend through son WILLIAM COOPER ANNIN × Phoebe Miller (Nat'l Nos. 101758/103212 = Lineage Book Vol 102/104) — confirming William C. Annin [p.871] = Samuel × Lydia's son, NOT John Annin's. Also son Joseph S. × Ellen Schenck Schureman.

Transcription and notes

Maintainer-supplied (DAR Genealogical Research System, services.dar.org, 2026-06-30). Resolves the Annin de-stub's root-identity question — that William Cooper Annin [p.871] is the son of Samuel Annin × Lydia Cooper (= a Daniel Sr descendant via Lydia [p.222], dau of Daniel Jr), refuting the "Mr. Local History" claim (in [G.22]) that he was John Annin's son.

MRS. EMELINE R. HAND HODGES. — 101758 Born in Hunterdon County, N. J. Wife of Edward H. Hodges. Descendant of Ensign Jonathan Hand and of Lieut. Samuel Annin, as follows: 1. John Cooper Hand (1827–1909) m. 1853 Mary Rittenhouse (1832–1908). 2. William Roy Hand (1798–1871) m. 1826 Phoebe Miller Annin (1804–87). 3. Aaron Hand (1774–1862) m. 1798 Hannah Roy (1776–1856); William Cooper Annin (1779–1854) m. 1801 Phoebe Miller (1781–1827). 4. Jonathan Hand m. Sarah Reeve; Samuel Annin m. 1776 Lydia Cooper (1758–95). Jonathan Hand served as ensign in Cumberland County, NJ militia… Samuel Annin (1753–1837) was pensioned, 1832, for service as private and lieutenant, Somerset County, NJ militia. He was born and died in Somerset County, N. J.

NN 103212 (Vol 104) = the SAME Hand line, not a new branch (pulled 2026-06-30): applicant Mrs. Mae Hodges Rich of Waverly, Iowa = the daughter of Edward H. Hodges × Emeline R. Hand (the NN 101758 applicant) — her entry adds gen "1. Edward H. Hodges (b. 1857) m. 1889 Emeline R. Hand (b. 1857)" then runs the identical chain down through John C. Hand → Phoebe Miller Annin → William C. Annin → Samuel Annin (and notes "Also No. 101758"). Minor: it gives Hannah Roy 1776–1850 (vs 1776–1856 in NN 101758). ⇒ both free DAR Lineage-Book apps document only the ONE William-C.-Annin child, Phoebe Miller Annin (→ Hand) — the DAR does not supply his other children. (The 4th GRS app, NN 265118/265119, is the Joseph-S.-Annin line, post-Lineage-Book / not free.)

This published entry locks (primary-published-DAR grade): - Samuel Annin (1753–1837) m. 1776 Lydia Cooper (1758–95) = [p.235] × [p.222]. - William Cooper Annin (1779–1854) m. 1801 Phoebe Miller (1781–1827) = [p.871] (dates now locked) — their son. - Phoebe Annin (1804–1887) m. 1826 Dr. William Roy Hand (1798–1871) = William C. Annin's gen-5 daughter = [p.963] (already cataloged; her husband Dr. W.R. Hand is recorded in her spouse field, no own file — NOT [p.1418], a gen-7 namesake grandson, nor [p.1419], a gen-7 infant). - John Cooper Hand (1827–1909) m. 1853 Mary Rittenhouse (1832–1908) = [p.1297] (their son); siblings William Milton [p.1295], Sarah C. [p.1298], Frances Elizabeth [p.1296]. ⇒ This DAR chain corroborates the already-cataloged Annin→Hand branch (p.963 + children) and locks their dates; the 1850 census is [D.435].

Corroboration sources for the Annin descendants — and their access

** Remotely accessible (free): - DAR Lineage Books — free, full-text on HathiTrust (and via Ancestry). Each applicant lineage gives a descent chain: NN 101758 (Vol 102 — the Hand/Hodges line, captured above), NN 103212 (Vol 104 — another William-C.-Annin line), NN 265118/265119 (the Joseph-S.-Annin line — would also settle the Van-Sinderen-vs-Schureman wife question). Pull these specific pages. - Littell [I.4] (on disk) — William C. Annin of Liberty Corner × Phebe Miller + daughters Lydia Anne R. (→ Boyle), Mary Aletta (→ Boyle, Illinois 1848). - Find A Grave / census** (the proven loop) — for the gen-5/6 Annins at Basking Ridge / Liberty Corner, Somerset Co.

** NOT remotely accessible — DAR Library (Washington DC) in-person ONLY (confirmed on the DAR catalog 2026-06-30 — "These images are only viewable in person at the DAR Library"). Order via DAR's copy/research service or a DAR-member visit if needed: - NJ s1 V788 — Genealogical & historical records of Somerset County, NJ (Basking Ridge Chapter; shelf GRC-1976 S1-V788). - NJ s1 V428 — Basking Ridge Chapter — historical/church records (shelf BASKING-R GRC-1941) — lists "Samuel Annin" + "Samuel Annin Mrs." - NJ s1 V091 (genealogical miscellany), V663 (Fleming descendants), V443** (Revolution records) — same in-person restriction.

⇒ Practical plan: corroborate the descendants from the HathiTrust Lineage Books (the 3–4 applicant chains) + Littell [I.4] + FaG/census — not the GRC reports (which need a DC visit).
