What this document records

🚨 a column offset on page 236 that will mislead a reader

On page 236 the RESIDENCE-OF-PARENTS column sits ONE LINE LOWER than the rest of the row, and so does the date column relative to the name column. A single horizontal crop therefore picks up the wrong row's residence. The page cross-checks itself: PLACE OF BIRTH (a left-hand column, correctly aligned) and RESIDENCE OF PARENTS (right-hand, offset) carry the same values one line apart. Reading both and requiring them to agree is what fixes the alignment. That is how Emma Caroline = Green Township and Ebner = Kennedy Town were settled.

🎯 page 236 green twp 1 may 1862 to 1 may 1863 three cooper births

Three Cooper households in one township on one return — and two of them are the brothers already documented together on [F.267] five years earlier, still at Green.

🎯🎯 it is the birth register and it says wilbert

“Wilbert Hutton Cooper”, read at 11×, both parts crisp — the “b” loop and terminal “t” of Wilbert, the crossed double-t of Hutton. The catalog already held “Wilbert” as PROBABLY his birth name — from [D.508], the 1870 Andover census recording him aged 7 as “Wilbert H.”, and from family tradition relayed by Don Jean Living, the branch's own genealogist, that “Wilbert was his birth name but he changed it”. This is the BIRTH REGISTER — the one record that speaks directly to a birth name, and it was made within months of the event rather than seven years or 150 years after. ⇒ the reading stops being a convergence of two indirect sources and becomes what the civil record itself says.

🆕 and it resolves the middle initial which nobody had

The middle name is “HUTTON”, not “Hudson”. Until now the catalog had [D.508]'s “Wilbert H.” (an initial only), Don Jean's “Wilbert” (no middle name), and the gravestone [G.84]'s “WILLIAM HUDSON”. The “H” in “Wilbert H.” is HUTTON — and Hudson is the later form, which makes a cleaner story than a bare given-name change: both name parts shifted together toward commoner forms. The catalog should not now assert why; William Hudson Cooper already flags Don Jean's stated motive (“to sound less foreign”) as the family's explanation rather than the catalog's.

✅ and it vindicates the l150 tree a second time

[L.150] (the Bernie tree) listed a “Wilbert H Cooper (1863–)” beside William Hudson, and John W Cooper dismissed it as “likely a duplicate/mis-split … do not adopt without evidence”. William Hudson Cooper has already recorded that the evidence arrived and the tree was half right — a real name, but his own rather than a separate brother's. This register is a second, independent confirmation, and [L.151] McKeever's “no Wilbert” is correspondingly wrong.

⚠️ what is not settled by it

It does not date the change. It establishes the birth name; [G.84] shows “William Hudson” complete by 1895. William Hudson Cooper's open test therefore stands: a record between 1870 and 1895 naming him would bracket when the switch happened. And this is emphatically not William Biddle Cooper William Biddle Cooper, a Philadelphia man born 16 Feb 1863 whose Find a Grave link to John W Cooper that file has already refuted.

🔑 the second gives a first name and a date

“Emma Caroline Cooper”, daughter of Aaron & Nancy Cooper, Green Twp. Caroline (Cooper) Crandell is “Caroline (Cooper) Crandell, b. ~1862”, a date inherited from an 1880 census age for “Carrie” and explicitly “not re-read from a crop in this catalog”. This row has the right parents, the right year, the right township — and a given name, Emma, that the catalog does not have. Argued at Caroline (Cooper) Crandell; the entry asserts nothing.

🔧 corrected the third household is not new it is p164 x p647

This entry first called the “Calvin C. & Rachel Cooper” household new to the catalog and minted Cooper for it. Both were wrong. Corrected 2026-09-03 (later, during the wrapped-lossless cleanup). It is Calvin Chandler Cooper Calvin CHANDLER Cooper (b. 31 Mar 1836, Warren Co.) × Rachel (Jones) Cooper Rachel Jones, and he is a son of Joseph Cooper Joseph Cooper of Independence Twp — the same Joseph whose other son Robert M. appears at [C.28]. The match is on four fields: given name, the middle initial C (= Chandler), the wife's given name Rachel, and the occupation BLACKSMITH — [D.378] enumerates him at Oxford, Warren Co. in 1880 as “Calvin C. Cooper, 45, blacksmith” with “wife Rachel, 44”. He was 26 in September 1862, which fits.

⚠️ how the error happened and it is worth one line

The check run before minting Cooper searched for a Calvin Cooper of Sussex — and this man is of WARREN, one county over. The literal claim (“no Calvin C. Cooper of Sussex is in the catalog”) was true and the conclusion drawn from it was not. [D.378] is cited by forty person files. A surname-and-given-name grep with no county filter would have found it instantly. ⇒ scope a duplicate-check to the NAME, not to the place the new record happens to sit in.

🟡 and the child is probably eleanor not ebner

The child's given name reads “E[b/l]ner” — five letters, E?ner, and the medial letter does not resolve between b and l even at 7× with autocontrast. Eleanor J. Cooper Eleanor J. Cooper (1862-1934) is this couple's daughter, and her birth is recorded there only as “~1862”, inferred from census ages (7 in Aug 1870, 17 in June 1880) and a stone year. “Elner” is a standard contraction of Eleanor. ⇒ Probably her, and if so this register gives her an EXACT date — 8 September 1862 — where the catalog has only a circa year. Graded PROBABLE and not written into Eleanor J. Cooper's birth: field; the argument is recorded there for the next reader. What blocks certainty: the register's sex cell for this row is a mark read as “1”, not the “—” used on the female rows either side of it, and no reading of it has been settled.

🎯 page 195 wantage 1 may 1859 to 1 may 1860 abba cooper

“Abba. Cooper”, born Jan 9th, parents “Mahlon & Margaret Coope[r]”, father a MILLER — read at 9× with date, name, parents and occupation in one frame. That is Mahlon Cooper Mahlon Cooper × Margaret, the Wantage miller's household already carrying Kittie Platt (b. 1855) and Mary Phelps from [F.242] and [F.247]. Abba is a third child. The sex cell is a ditto following a female row, and the year is not written in the cell — it comes from the return period, which runs 1 May 1859 to 1 May 1860.

🔴 and f113 calls her abigail

[F.113] indexes this row as “Abigail”. The register says Abba. That is the SAME INDEXER HABIT the 20 Aug visit caught on page 130, where [F.113]'s “Abigail” turned out to be ABRAHAM, male. ⇒ an “Abigail” in this index is not evidence of the name Abigail — it is evidence of a short A-name the indexer expanded.

❌ page 151 stillwater 1856 57 negative

All ~25 parent entries read: Huff, Hooey, Shorter, Mains, Crown, Thomson, South, Emmons, Roy, Wintermute, Mackey, Sturner, Sheron, Lewis, Yeomans, Emery, Hendershot, Perry, Farris, Homler. No Cooper surname. And [F.113]'s pointer to this page cannot be right: it indexes a Cooper birth of 21 Jan 1858 to page 151, and this return runs 1856-57. An 1858 birth cannot sit on it.

❌ page 206 ish stillwater 1861 62 negative

All parents read across the lower half — Huff, Teets, Stafford, Heeter, Westbrook, Knox, McCarold, Hendershot, Marvin, Sutton, Keepers, Martin, Sliker, Puder, Maxwell, South, Yetman, Ramage, Crouse, Thomson, Smith, Mackey, Savacool, Garris, Cummons, Kays, Lanterman, Collings. No Cooper surname. The [F.113] target for this page, “21 Feb 1861 Delfer, father J”, is not among them.

🔑 cooper is an occupation here twice and it is the same family

Page 151: “Frances Mackey … Phillip & Clara Mackey … Cooper”. Page ~206: “George Mackey … Phillip & Clarissa Mackey … Cooper”. The same Stillwater cooper's family, five years apart — the seventh and eighth instances of the barrel-maker trap the catalog now tracks. Worth knowing that the false hits cluster in one family rather than scattering: a Stillwater “Cooper” occupation hit is very likely a Mackey.

🗺️ anchors and the offset that holds

image 160 = page 151 · image 205 = page 195 · image 248 = page 236. The +9/+10 offset derived from the 20 Aug anchors held across all three, which is what let the four target pages be found in one pass. image 217's printed page number was not captured; ~206 is derived.

Transcription and notes

Page 236 is the payload: THREE Cooper births from THREE households in Green Twp, two of them the brothers [p.775] and [p.582] who were already documented together on [F.267] five years earlier — plus Calvin C. & Rachel Cooper of Kennedy Town, new to the catalog.

Two of the three rows give NAMES THE CATALOG DOES NOT HAVE: the register writes “Wilbert Hutton” where [p.776] carries William Hudson, and “Emma Caroline” where [p.1816] is simply Caroline with a census-derived “~1862”.

Page 195 adds ABBA COOPER to [p.584]'s Wantage household — and [F.113] renders her “Abigail”, the same habit that turned ABRAHAM into “Abigail” on page 130.

Pages 151 and 206 are clean negatives, and both [F.113] pointers to them are impossible.

Provenance, the one-line RESIDENCE column offset on page 236, the row-counting method used to beat it, and the two Mackey “Cooper” occupation traps are in the source: and coverage: headers.
