Note
THIS SETTLES THE DEATH DATE, which the catalog could not settle before. [J.402], the Redlands Daily Facts, is datelined 17 April 1925 and says the accident happened 'today'; FamilySearch tree 27C3-YVB (a lead) says 16 April; this index line reads 4-15-25. The state's own index is the better authority, and 15 April 1925 is now the recorded date, with the newspaper's dateline noted as a disagreement. IT ALSO CORROBORATES THE IDENTIFICATION the William G Cooper file had graded only PROBABLE: age 49 at death matches a man born 22 December 1875 [B.130] exactly, and the county code 36 is San Bernardino, where [J.402] places the fatal accident at an Upland well.
Reading notes
THIS IS A TYPED COLUMNAR INDEX PHOTOGRAPHED AS A BOOK SPREAD, AND IT IS SKEWED. The printed headings on page 2180 are: NAME OF DECEDENT (LAST | FIRST | middle initial) | initial of spouse | AGE | SEX | RACE | PLACE OF DEATH (COUNTY | CITY) | DATE OF DEATH (MONTH | DAY | YEAR) | DATE REGISTERED (MONTH | YEAR) | LOCAL FILE NUMBER (DISTRICT | NUMBER) | STATE FILE NUMBER. TWO LETTER COLUMNS BETWEEN THE GIVEN NAME AND THE AGE DO NOT RESOLVE at 10x - they read as 'R' and 'L' but the headings above them are too small to assign, so they are recorded as read and not interpreted. The middle initial W is clear. THE STATE FILE NUMBER COULD NOT BE ALIGNED TO HIS ROW WITH CONFIDENCE: the book's skew puts the right-hand columns about half a row out at this x-position, and a mis-aligned file number is worse than none. It is left unrecorded rather than guessed. Ancestry's own index of this page gives no state file number either, only the name, age, date and county. NO PARENTS' NAMES APPEAR - the 1905-1939 California index does not carry them, contrary to the hope recorded in the William G Cooper todo. The parents' surnames the todo wanted would be on the CERTIFICATE itself, which this index only points to.
