Compiler context

Helen M. Wright unifying source: this I.145 is one of FOUR catalog entries derived from Helen M. Wright's research: 1. I.29g Stryker-Rodda 1975 pp. 14-18 = reprint of Wright's tavern-license typescripts 2. I.144 Talbot 1948 Colonial Inns of Morris County 1740-1781 = Wright served as Research Committee Chairman 3. F.174 Hanover Presbyterian Church Records 1746-1796 = D.A.R. Parsippanong Chapter transcription (= NOT directly Wright; but same era + adjacent township) 4. I.145 (this entry) Mendham Township records 1964 = Wright's own published book

= Helen M. Wright was the central Mendham-area genealogical-records compiler of the mid-20th century. Per Stryker-Rodda 1975 frontmatter page xii: "Helen M. Wright, who prepared this list, was a genealogist and collector of primary source materials, especially in her native area around Mendham."

EARLY RECORDS OF MENDHAM TOWNSHIP, MORRIS COUNTY, NEW JERSEY

TRANSCRIBED FROM COUNTY AND TOWNSHIP MINUTE BOOKS

BY

HELEN M. WRIGHT, M.A.

FORMERLY OF JERSEY CITY NOW 10 CRESTMONT ROAD, MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY

1964

Image 4 — Dedication [verbatim partial]

DEDICATION To MENDHAM TOWNSHIP

Especially to those of the long village in the valley, called the Village until 1860, now BROOKSIDE; and to those of the settlements in the northern hills called CALAIS, WALNUT GROVE later YE[?], BUCK[?], SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN, FLANDERS, who were of New England and Long Island stock, [...] sawmills and grist mills, built substantial houses and churches, cleared the fields for farms, planted orchards, and sent their children to college.

A PRIVATE DISTRIBUTION 1964

Note Wright's framing: Mendham settlers were "of New England and Long Island stock" — = consistent with fam.1/fam.2 Long Island English-colonial origin per Chambers I.138 + Hockenbary I.140 + Boyer I.143.

Image 3 — Source Material list (= TOC) [partial verbatim]

EARLY RECORDS OF MENDHAM TOWNSHIP SOURCE MATERIAL 1. [Western?] County Court 1745-1753 ............... p. i Earmarks - Mendham Town Book 1741[?]-1745[?] ........... p. ii Meetings beginning 1753 .......... p. iv [other sections... pages vi, vii, viii]

= Helen M. Wright's transcription draws from at least 3 distinct manuscript sources: County Court records 1745-1753, Mendham Town Earmarks Book 1741-1745, Town Meetings 1753+.

Image 30 — 1789-1791 township-officer payment ledger [verbatim Cooper bracket]

Per Image 30 of Wright's transcription (= unidentified page-number, but appears to be a town-officer-payment ledger dated 1789-1792):

1789 p. 11 .......... [Noel] Coe 1789 .......... Daniel Mordice .......... Aldam Denman .......... Mattias Lum .......... Jacob Johnson .......... John Davis Jr. .......... Benjamin Lamson .......... Joseph Pierson .......... John Heatox .......... David Turvesy 1791 p. 12 .......... Richard Shotwell .......... Thomas Brogan Jr. .......... John Cary [Transferred to father, Feb. 25, 1826; son of his ?] 1792 .......... Nehemiah Day .......... Silas Ward .......... James Hills .......... John Heaton .......... George Bull Jr. .......... Shubal Pitney .......... James Lamson .......... Henry Cooper [= NEW catalog attestation; primary-source-confirms p.503 Henry Miller Cooper of Mendham 1733-1819 Mendham presence] .......... [Assumed by James Drake, Ebenezer Drake, Jan. 5, 1832] .......... Isaac Clark .......... Timothy Mellin .......... Henry Brotherton .......... Stephen Ludlow

= Henry Cooper appears in a Mendham Township records context dated 1789-1792 — likely an earmarks-record-transfer-ledger or town-officer payment ledger. Note the format suggests entries are "transferred" between persons over time (e.g., "Transferred to father, Feb. 25, 1826" + "Assumed by James Drake, Ebenezer Drake, Jan. 5, 1832"). = property/right transfers between Mendham residents recorded by year + name.

Image 90 — page 76 of book — 1763 payment ledger [verbatim partial]

p. 64 [or p. 94] Nov. 25 (1763) Nathaniel Wfwerson [Wofworson?] 25 (paid) John Cary (paid) Morgan Young [Dec.] 3 (paid) 6 [Earl?] Carter 9 Henry Brotherton Jacob Cooke p. 95 Dec. 14 ...

= Mendham Township earmarks/payment context, year 1763. No Cooper-name entries on this sampled page.

Catalog-defining findings

Finding 1 — Henry Cooper PRIMARY-SOURCE-ATTESTED in Mendham 1789-1791

The Image 30 Henry Cooper attestation = probably p.503 Henry Miller Cooper of Mendham 1733-1819 (= age 56-58 at attestation; fam.2 Mendham line). This is the FIRST primary-source attestation of Henry Miller Cooper in a township-records-tier source (= previously documented at family-tree-tier per L.121 + L.122 Ancestry trees).

Finding 2 — Possible disambiguation of "Cooper Henry 1775" tavern license

I.144 Talbot 1948 / I.29g Stryker-Rodda 1975 attests "Cooper Henry 1775" tavern license. Two candidates: - p.503 Henry Miller Cooper of Mendham 1733-1819 (= fam.2 Mendham) - p.98 Henry Cooper of fam.10 Hanover (= b. pre-1738)

Given Helen M. Wright's Mendham-research-focus + this I.145 attestation of "Henry Cooper" in Mendham 1789-1791, the 1775 tavern licensee is MORE LIKELY p.503 Henry Miller Cooper than p.98 fam.10 Henry. BUT both Henrys could have been Morris Co. tavern licensees in 1775 — only Helen M. Wright's underlying card catalog or original Morris Co. Court Minute Books could resolve definitively.

Finding 3 — Mendham Township settlement geography per Wright

Per Wright's dedication: settlement clusters in Mendham Township ca. 1741+ included: - The Village in the valley (= renamed Brookside in 1860) - CALAIS (northern hills) - WALNUT GROVE (later renamed) - BUCK (Sugarloaf Mountain area) - FLANDERS

Settlers were "of New England and Long Island stock" — = aligns with fam.1/fam.2 LI Cooper origin tradition.

Finding 4 — Wright's source manuscripts (= primary-source acquisition path)

Wright's Mendham-records transcription draws from THREE underlying manuscript sources: 1. County Court records 1745-1753 (= Morris Co. Court Minute Books or similar) 2. Mendham Town Earmarks Book 1741-1745+ (= Mendham Township-specific earmarks ledger) 3. Mendham Town Meeting Minutes 1753+

= Same as I.144 Talbot 1948 chain: Morris Co. Court Minute Books are also Talbot's underlying source. Mendham Town Earmarks Book + Town Meeting Minutes are Mendham-specific — likely held at Mendham Township municipal records OR Morris County Historical Society Acorn Hall OR Joint Free Public Library Morristown.
